Inside MCCA History 3 2011 in review 4 & 5 Project Police 6 Events 8 Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter January 2012 2011 Goes out with a Bang... or two NEAR: Thanksgiving weekend Ben Renfro found this nasty dent in his 62. FAR: A couple of weeks earlier Alex Moats 68 was run over by a Suburban. This winter has been pretty rough on the Corvairs of a couple of MCCA s youngest members. The first victim of automotive carnage was Alex Moats driving his 68 500 coupe home from work when a lady driving a Suburban decided she wanted to park where his rear fender was... The suburban won. Well it ends up that the Suburban had the wrong tag and no insurance. Alex s Corvair buddies jumped in to help. Jerry Nelson made an agreement to work with Alex to get Nov. Meeting EM 0 LM 1 January Meeting Saturday, Jan. 14th 7 pm Derby Recreation Center 801 E. Market, Derby, KS the bodywork done and Terry Kalp donated whatever body parts would be required off the 68 parts car at his shop. The corner damaged on Alex s car is the only good corner on the parts car. Ben was a bit more lucky. The man who ran into his parked Corvair left and note and contact information and was willing to pay to have the damage repaired. Right after the accident, Greg, Ben s father Continued on Page 7 President s Corner Club Plans for 2012 Most of the November MCCA meeting was spent working on club events for the new year. Coming up first in February is the Wichita Swap meet, the 3rd and 4th at the Kansas Coliseum. Terry Kalp offered to use part of his booth to promote MCCA and Corvairs. He also volunteered to create some tri-fold brochures to hand out at the meet. Bring your suggestions on how to promote the club and car to the January meeting. The Sunday after the swap meet, February 5th will be a MCCA business meeting from 2-3 pm at Continued on Page 3

January 2012 Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter Page 3 MCCA History February 1982 Recently while shifting some boxes around in my basement storage area, I ran across a box of MCCA History given to me by Doug Horstman a couple of years ago. At first glance, when I first received the box, it seemed a lot of disorganized papers. When I looked again recently, I found a folder with old MCCA newsletters going back to 1975. My plan is to publish some excerpts from these newsletters in this column each month. The February 1982 newsletter was both sides of two sheets of 8x10 paper. Included was a great tech tip from Glenn Ziesenis on tapping into the heating system to make a rear window defroster, classified ads, a list of officers, a recipe for, One Pot Dinner. To show that some things don t change, the February activity was a dinner on the 13th and dues were $15. Also the View from The Wheel is just as valid today as it was in 1982. Happy Birthday fellow MCCA members! Here weare thirteen months old and growing. December, 1981 marked one year that MCCA has again been trying to keep the Corvair alive and well in the Wichita and surrounding areas and also trying to provide its members with he opportunity to get together with other people and talk about what the clu is all about -- CORVAIRS. With the coming ear of 1982 we will be finding out if, indeed,we have provided what our membership has joined MCCA for, whether is be for the activities, technical information, fellowship with other Corvair enthusiasts or whatever. For everyone that became a member of MCCA in 1981 it is again time to rejoin our ranks. If the MCCA has provided what they, the membership, joined for I am sure that they will again pay their dues and be a part of Mid Continent Corvair Association. If we, the club have failed in doing our part then we will find our membership dwindling in the months to come. We, the club, most certainly means everyone -- from the officers all the way to the last person that joined. We are all part of MCCA. The officers must provide the leadership and guidance, but in turn, the membership must also show and active interest. For without he members what is there for the officers to do? Just paying dues to CORSA and MCCA and then not joining in on the meetings or activities does not help the officers in planing of the things they are trying to provide. As you might know by now, hat I am trying to say is we, the club, need more and more participation-- without it we have nothing. So as we head into 1982 let s not only join but let s do! Let s make MCCA one of the biggest and best Corvair clubs in the Midwest, if not the best club -- period! Let me be the first, but hopefully not the last, to say Happy Birthday MCCA and Let s do it! Glenn Ziesenis Meeting... Continued from Page 1 Doug Horstman s home. Doug s address is 1523 Janzen Dr., Mulvane. Everyone is welcome to the business meetings. Next will be the Pre-Spring Social Dinner on February 11th instead of our regular meeting. The dinner will be held at 6:00 pm at the Home Town Buffet, 6820 Central Ave., Wichita. Cold Tuna is set for the following Saturday, February 18th at the Kalp Shop 2140 W. 101st Street North in Valley Center. Starts around 8 am and lasts til the final project is finished. There are already a couple of projects scheduled. LP Penner has offered to demonstrate some automotive painting techniques. There will be lists passed around at the January meeting to sign up for what food to bring and if you have a project to work on. Also discussed at the November meeting was a proposed MCCA road trip sometime in March. Making a trip to Hutchinson was discussed, but then someone mentioned Abilene. Abilene is the site of the Dwight Eisenhower Museum and Library, but there were also several other points of interest and good places to eat that could be visited.

Page 4 Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter January 2012 2011 In Review January 2011 There was a good turnout for the January meeting held at the Derby Recreation Center. The first order of business was to select the spot for the February Pre-Spring Social. After a presentation by Doug Horstman HomeTown Buffet was selected. Members decided to put all the shirts we have in inventory on sale to clear them out. February 2011 First there was an excellent meal at Home- Town Buffet on February 12th for the Spring Social, then a week later a fantastic spread of food for the Cold Tuna noon meal. No MCCA member should have gone hungry in February. Cold Tuna didn t live up to it s name. Should have been Moderate Tuna. With the temperatures approaching 70 degrees it was pleasant both inside and out at the Kalp Shop. Several traveled quite a distance to attend. There were six Tunaites that came down from Kansas City, four from Oklahoma City and one from Springfield, Missouri. Paul Jones drove to the Kalp Shop from Lyons, Kansas. March 2011 Marc Nuessen sent a note to update the progress he is making on the 63 Corvair Sedan he is restoring for his parents. They Honeymooned in this Corvair. The end of the winter is the time for the annual Corvair Performance workshop in Indianapolis. Attending were Terry, Ned with wife Kathy and Bob Welch from OKC.. After the workshop, everyone went out to Michael and Tracy LeVeque s place for dinner. There was a tour of Michael s shop. The paint shop contained a very rare Corvair, a Canadian Stinger. April 2011 Thursday April 14th, Terry slid into the gold 65 500 Sport Sedan and headed South. First stop was the Oklahoma City Corvair club meeting. After an overnight stay in OKC. Loren Capron, Chris Teer, Pat Silver and Terry headed out for the Heart of Texas Corvair Reunion in Lakeway, TX (Just NW of Austin) Pat Silver won first in EM Closed with his freshly restored 64 Monza, Loren Capron took first, EM Open with his blue 64 Convertible. The Gold Sedan won 2nd in LM closed and the Long Distance Award. May 2011 Heading out for lunch at the Rock Cafe, Stroud, OK on May 14th were Bernie and Julie Strecker, Ned and Kathy Madsen, Larry Lee joined Terry Kalp in the gold LM 500 sedan. They met up with the OKC group at Pop s on Rt 66, visited awhile then headed on over to Stroud where the Wichita- OKC group met up with the Tulsa Corvairs. The Tri-State Corvair meet was held in Red River, NM (near Taos) Two MCCA members, Lee Olsen and Terry Kalp attended. The 35 Corvairs attending represented a great variety of the Marquee. Every year of production except 1969 was represented, there were three Corvair station wagons, an UltraVan and even a V-8 Corvair. On Memorial Day weekend MCCA patriarch Mel Horstman gathered his children together to clean out the stash of Corvair parts he had in his garage and shed. The result was that two car trailer loads of parts made their way from Derby to the Kalp Shop in Valley Center. The booty is mostly from Corvairs parted out over the years... even some Late Model Corvair parts are included. Mel is happy now that he can park both Lincoln s in his garage. June 2011 Again this year dark clouds and threats of rain early Sunday morning hurt attendance at the annual Lake Afton All Wheels Car Show. Those that did show up were greeted with sunshine and pleasant weather. In addition to the Show the MCCA also holds it s June meeting. The primary act of business was the election of officers. Doug Horstman became the newly-elected President,. At least 37 people showed up at the Kalp Shop for the 2011 Juna Tuna. A couple of car/truck fulls came up from Oklahoma City area and Scott Allison drove his Corvair down from the Kansas City Area. The major Corvair work for the day was switching out the differential in Greg Renfro s convertible. Lloyd Folger worked some on his latest acquisition. Pat Silver s 64 coupe hit the lift for a cure of the PowerGlide leaks and a valve adjustment. The major event of the Tuna was lunch of steaks, hot links and brats provided by the MCCA. Continued on Page 5

January 2012 Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter Page 5 2011 In Review July 2011 On a Hot 4th of July afternoon the Corvairs trickled into the parking lot of 81 Speedway. Greg and Ben Renfro drove their EM Corvairs, Terry Kalp arrived in his LM V8 Corvair followed by Doug and Jean Horstman, who borrowed Terry s Gold LM sedan. Jim Dallas bought two Corvairs his EM race car and the green LM Monza coupe. Filling out the group was Bernie Strecker in his LM Corsa convertible and Lloyd Folger with his custom Corsa Coupe. The Corvairs were displayed at the base of the bleachers. At the intermission the Corvairs moved onto the track for a mini-show then the Corvairs took a lap around the track and returned to their spot. The July meeting was held at the Moonlight car show in Downtown Wichita. Four Corvairs caravaned down to Old Town and zipped into the 200 block of North St. Francis. There were even four parking spots left in the shade. Around 7 pm several members gathered around the Corvairs for informal conversation. On Monday both Bernie and Terry got called to pick up their trophies. August 2011 Ice Cream at the Sonic has become an after-the- August meeting tradition. Weather was perfect. Bernie Strecker showed his Corvair at the Blacktop Nationals. Even though the temperature was rather warm the turnout of spectators was very good. The best part of the show was the comments on the car, meeting and making new friends and watching the crowd. Had a long, but great Corvair day Saturday, August 27th. Took out at 4:30 am, picked up Ned Madsen and headed to Springfield, MO to Keith Hammett s. The plan was to deliver some parts to Keith, help him on his engine and tour Jeff Moore s shop. September 2011 There was a good turnout for the September 10th MCCA road trip to Beaumont for dinner and visit the windmills. It was a great, almost winding drive down Hwy. 400 for less than an hour to Beaumont. When the Corvairs parked people came out of the Café to take a look. After everyone s stomach was satisfied, it was time for a group photo of the Corvairs beside the famous wooden water tower. Next a short trip to see the field of wind powered generators. The wind generators were impressive. Dennis Fuller had worked on an installation crew in Texas and was able to provide the group with a lot of information. October 2011 HACOA put on a exceptional Great Plains Corvair Roundup at the Elms Spa and Resort in Excelsior Springs, MO. Terry Kalp took out Friday morning traveling with Alex Moats, Patrick Tinin, Bernie and Julie Strecker. That night at the valve cover races Dennis Fuller showed up to race and Gary Moore to spectate. Saturday Bob Ferenc showed up and toured the Corvairs in the parking lots. Twelve states were represented at the event. There were 129 participants that attended the Awards Banquet with nearly 150 attending one or more activities during the event. The 2011 Luna Tuna hit the jackpot the weather could not have been better. Large groups from both the Kansas City and Oklahoma City Corvair clubs joined an excellent turnout of MCCA members for a fun Corvair day. The Tuna got an early start as Bernie and Jared Strecker brought Jared s EM coupe up to the Kalp shop Friday evening. Their Tuna task was to stop an oil leak. Second in the shop on Saturday was Lloyd Folger with his 64 Convertible. Soon the front end of it was up in the air while the front hubs and master cylinder were being inspected. Matt Cox pulled up with his EM coupe on a dolly, more brake work, new lines were to be installed. Pulling into the last open spot was Larry Lee in his LM convertible. Larry dove into his steering column to work on some horn issues. November 2011 The November MCCA meeting was focused on making plans for 2012. Since CORSA is asking local clubs to pay $3 for each non-corsa member, MCCA members voted to raise dues to $15 from $12. Members also decided to return to the Home Town Buffet for the February Pre-Spring Social meal. A Spring Road Trip was discussed and someone suggested going to Abilene. Information was given for participation in the Derby Christmas Parade.

Page 6 Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter January 2012 Project Police Bob Ferenc took his Spyder heads to Steve Goodman over Thanksgiving break. Rumor has it that Alan Ballard purchased a 66 Corsas 140, 4-speed, blue with white Z-28 stripes from northern Kansas. slipped into the waiting body. This project has an added difficulty level because Duane purchased it disassembled, Patrick got the Corvair in parts from Duane. Looking for parts that may or may not be there has added time to this project. Present plans are for Patrick to have his Corvair at Cold Tuna in February after replacing a bad flywheel and doing a lot of while I am there projects. The additional tasks including cleaning and painting the drive-train, resealing the transaxle, powdercoating the shrouds, installing new engine seals. Jerry Nelson was looking at a 62 AC Monza coupe project... not sure if it worked out for him. Patrick Tinin and Alex Moats have been working on Patrick s LM Monza coupe. Alex s grandfather, Duane Grim had already rebuilt the transaxle. Alex and Patrick had to finish assembling the engine, paint the transaxle then put the powerpack back together. Next the power-pack was Larry Lee is back sanding on his 66 Corsa Convertible he has all the under hood and door jam areas painted blue and now is just putting the final touches on the body before he makes it all Blue Terry Kalp continues to put his 61 Greenbrier back together Tri-State 2012 The TRI-STATE Corvair Meet will be in the high desert of the Colorado Rocky Mountains on May 18-20, 2012. The location is Salida, Colorado, the Gateway Inn and Suites. Rocky Mountain CORSA is the host club and other attending clubs are CNM and PPCC plus from other states. January 2012 Bang! Continued from Page 1 called Terry Kalp to look at the dent. Since the car was able to be driven, Terry and Greg decided to take on fixing the dent during Christmas break when Ben would be out of school and Greg had some time off. Work started the Tuesday after Christmas. LP Penner stopped by on Thursday and held class on filling and sanding. By Friday the last coat of paint was on and Greg and Terry had time to install the Radio Ben got for Christmas. When it came time to test the radio there was no key, Terry grabbed a ring of miscellaneous Corvair keys and the first one Greg tried, Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter Page7 After a sesion with the Port-a-power the major part of the dent is gone and only a few wrinkles are left. Next was some hammer and dolly work, a session with the welded stud dent puller and some grinding... Several skim coats of body filler and the quarter was ready for some John Deer Blitz Black paint. In-N-Out of Arlington Mel s wagon comes home. Ned s Impala and a new tow bar adapter got the 61 Lakewood from Arlington, TX back to Wichita. Mel s son Tom was selling the wagon to make space and funds to finish his 67 convertible. Nothing is better to break up the Winter blah s than a road trip and a great lunch. Ned and Terry headed out for lunch at 6 am Saturday, January 7, five and one half hours later they were munching on a Double Double and fries at the In-N-Out in Arlington, TX. After the tasty meal it was over to Tom Horstman s for the real purpose of the trip (at least for Terry) Terry was picking up the 61 Corvair Lakewood he bought from Tom and checking out Tom s recently painted 67 Corvair Convertible. A couple of tweaks on the freshly made Tow bar adapter the wagon was hooked up to Ned s Impala and they were out of there.
