2 CIRCLE CITY CORVETTES Issue 2017-9 Circle City Corvettes Newsletter September 2017 CREATED FOR THE PROMOTION AND ENJOYMENT OF THE CHEVROLET CORVETTE. President s Comments The Club had another great Corvettes and Coffee in Enterprise on 12 August. We had 13 Corvettes show up with 19 Club members. The next Corvettes and Coffee will be on 9 September at the Panera Bread in Dothan. Please try and join us for a great time. You can go to the Club website to see some photos from our recent events. They are in the Newsletter part of the website. The Club also had a great showing at the Weevil City Cruisers Cruise-In on 5 August. August was Corvette month for the Weevil City Cruisers Cruise-In and the Corvettes were out in mass. Great support from the Club and I thank you all for all your support. Jenny and I will be heading to the Corvette Funfest in Effingham, Illinois from 14 to 17 September with our 1967 Corvette. The Corvette FunFest is hosted by Mid America Motorworks, a great supplier of Corvette parts and accessories. We got a VIP pass at the Beach Caravan auction in May. We are really excited to have the 67 Corvette be part of the 50 years of Corvette display at the show. We will take plenty of pictures to add to the website. There is the Emerald Coast Car Show on 9 September in Niceville, Florida. We had a good group go there last year and it was a fun show. Jimmy Leonard won the Best in Show award at that show last year. It has moved to the Mullet Festival Site in Niceville for this year. Let me know if you have any interest in going down as a group. There is also the Southeastern Drag Racers Assn. 17 th Annual Car Show at the Clarion Inn at the intersection of Hwy 231 and the Ross Clark Circle on 30 September, sign in from 8 to 10AM and awards at 2PM. Entry Fee $20.00 first Car $15.00 each additional car. Please let me know if you have any good ideas for Club Cruises or other events. I am working with Roger on a potential cruise and it will be a good one. Stay tuned for more details. Save the Wave.

CIRCLE CITY CORVETTES Issue -9 2 September 23 rd Caravan to Donaldson, Georgia The Club met at the Shell Station in Dothan and caravanned to Donaldsonville, GA to visit a collection of cars and car memorabilia. Mike Moulton has an unbelievable collection of old gas pumps and other automobile memorabilia like gas and oil cans, gas pump globes, jacks etc. He also had some great old Ford cars and trucks. After a tour of his collection we all went to Jo's Restaurant in Donaldsonville and had a great lunch. Thank you Roger for coordinating the cruise and to all of you that supported this fun event.

CIRCLE CITY CORVETTES Issue -9 3 Recent Local Events (Continued) August 12 - Corvettes and Coffee We had another great corvettes and coffee with 19 members joining in on the fun and great coffee. There were a total of 13 Corvettes that looked great in the Panera Bread parking lot. The next Corvettes and Coffee will be on 9 September at the Dothan Panera Bread from 8 to 10am. See you there.

CIRCLE CITY CORVETTES Issue -9 4 Monthly NCM and Corvette News Corvette Trivia Did You Know? Corvette fans know lots about their cars but maybe there s some Corvette trivia you haven t run across yet. See if you know the following fun Corvette facts. The Corvette was named after a small, maneuverable warship of the same name. Myron Scott, the creator of the All-American Soap Box Derby, is credited with naming the Corvette. Original Chevrolet Logo with American Flag The original front emblem and horn button was designed to show a checkered flag crossed with an American flag. The design was changed when it was discovered that using an American flag on a commercial product is illegal. The American flag was changed to a flag showing the Chevrolet bowtie emblem and a French fleur-de-lis symbol, reflective of the French etymology of the Chevrolet name. Corvettes are assembled today in Bowling Green, Kentucky. They have previously also been assembled in Flint, Michigan and St. Louis, Missouri.

CIRCLE CITY CORVETTES Issue -9 5 All states have official insignia, such as a state flower or state bird. Kentucky, where Corvettes are currently manufactured, also has an Official Sports Car the Corvette, of course! A Corvette has had the honor of serving as the pace car ten different times in the Indianapolis 500. Generation C2 Corvettes, produced during the years 1963 1967, are also known as Sting Rays. The design was partially inspired by a Mako shark that the designer Bill Mitchell had caught while deep-sea fishing. The Mako shark further inspired the C3 generation as well. The 1963 1967 Sting Ray also tops Automobile Magazine s Top 100 Coolest cars list. Astronauts with their Corvettes A long relationship exists between NASA s astronauts and the Chevy Corvette. In 1960, Jim Rathmann owner of the nearby Chevrolet dealership and winner of the Indianapolis 500, convinced General Motors to give the Mercury 7 astronauts brand new Corvettes for publicity and advertising benefits. Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom were known for racing their Corvettes on Florida s Space Coast highways near Cape Canaveral. Space-race pilot Chuck Yeager drove the Corvette pace car for the 1986 Indianapolis 500. 47% of Corvette owners hold college degrees, higher than the national average only 27% of all US adults have a degree. The original 1953 Corvettes were all Polo White with a red interior. The Polo White paint was last used in 1957. 1963 Split Rear Window Image Copyright Serious Wheels An argument developed between Bill Mitchell and Zora Arkus Duntov over the now-famous split rear window in the 1963 coupe, favored by Mitchell. It was removed the next year and never seen again. A total of 10,594 split-window coupes were produced in 1963.

CIRCLE CITY CORVETTES Issue -9 6 One of the rarest collector models is a 1969 Corvette with the ZL-1 all aluminum 427 engine, because only two units were sold in 1969 with that particular engine. The 2005 model first introduced the keyless access and start. It also featured headlights that didn t pop up, which hadn t been seen on a Corvette since 1962
