ELECTROSTEER MODEL 55-0100A FRESHWATER MODEL 55-0101A SALTWATER INSTALLATION AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS CUSTOMER MUST RECEIVE THIS MANUAL AT TIME OF SALE OR AFTER INSTALLATION Rev 01/13 P/N 99-55276

INTRODUCTION Congratulations, you have just purchased one of the most unique products available today in the marine industry. A device that is able to steer your kicker motor with just the touch of a button. With proper installation and care, your Electrosteer will provide you with years of trouble free use and performance. NOTE: The Electrosteer CANNOT be used if you have a main engine to kicker steering tie bar. The main engine tie bar must be disconnected. Please take a few moments to review the information contained in this booklet to familiarize yourself with the installation procedures of your new Electrosteer. Installation is easy particularly when you know each step ahead of time. GETTING STARTED Here is a list of the tools and supplies that you will need: Tools and Equipment: 1. Electric drill with 1/8 drill bit 2. A Phillips head screw driver 3. Tube of dielectric grease for the electrical connections (recommended) 4. 9/16 & 1/2 Wrench 5. Hacksaw NOTICE DO NOT SCREW THE UNIT DOWN OR CUT THE BENT ROD UNTIL ALL THE DIRECTIONS HAVE BEEN READ AND YOU ARE SURE OF THE MOUNTING LOCATION 2

SELECTING THE MOUNTING LOCATION The Electrosteer is designed to be easily customized to most boat transoms. The unit may be placed directly in front of the kicker motor or off to one side. The unit must be run horizontally and securely mounted. Most kicker installations require a Z bend in the rod. The included steering rod comes pre-bent for your convenience. Some installations may require cutting the rod on both ends. The closer you mount the Electrosteer to your kicker motor, the shorter the rod. INSTALLING THE BALL STUD TO THE GEAR BAR There are two mounting holes for the ball stud and stop bushings on each side of the gear bar. There are two situations when the inside holes of the gear bar must be used: a. If the gear bar bends upward when fully extended in either direction b. If the stop bushing and ball stud do not reach the center stop of the gear bar. 1. Using one of the threaded holes on the gear bar farthest from the kicker motor, put an internal tooth washer and stop bushing on the ball stud. Insert the ball stud into one of the threaded holes and hand tighten NOTE: In final assembly it is recommended to use loctite on the threads and tighten securely. 2. At the other end of the gear bar put an internal tooth washer and stop bushing onto the 3/4 bolt and insert it into one of the threaded holes and hand tighten. NOTE: The threads of the ball stud and stop bolt must not extend below the gear bar or it will not slide correctly. 3

MOUNTING THE BALL STUD TO THE MOTOR NOTE: The ball studs and quick disconnects come assembled. Remove the ball studs from the quick disconnects by pulling back the spring loaded sleeve. You will have one extra washer and nut that you will not use. Attach one ball stud to the front of your kicker motor. The location of the hole is determined by the brand of motor that you have. Some motor manufacturers have a special bracket that can be purchased from them, (i.e. Mercury) that will eliminate the need to drill a hole. (Picture 1) Picture 1 Other manufacturers may already have a pre-dilled hole that will accept our ball stud. (See picture 2) Picture 2 If you own a motor that does not fit into either one of these categories then you will have to drill a hole in your motor. Look directly in front of the motor cover to determine where is the best place for you to drill a hole in order to mount the ball stud. The ball stud can be installed with the ball up or down. The only concern is that you need to have enough room to attach the quick disconnect over the ball stud. (See pictures 3-4) Picture 3 Picture 4 If you do not have adequate room to attach the quick disconnect to the ball stud, you will have to use our mounting brackets (included), in order to give you adequate room. You will need to drill two holes and attached the brackets as shown. (See pictures 5-6) Picture 6 Picture 5 NOTE: If using the flat mounting brackets, it is best to keep them as short as possible. The kicker ball stud should be as close to the kicker frame as possible. 4

ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS 1. Mount the electrical control box inside the boat using the two ½ inch screws provided. Position the control box in a dry spot no more than 5 ft from the steering unit and not more than 4 ft from the main boat battery. 2. The push button switch is designed to be loose and not permanently installed so that it may travel with you in the boat. 3. Run the three pronged switch lead to the control module and the two pronged lead for the control module to the Electrosteer unit. 4. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to each of the connectors and plug them together. 5. After all connections are made, connect the ring terminal leads to the battery. Connect the red lead to the positive (+) terminal and the black lead to the negative (-) terminal. 6. Test the unit by running it back and forth to make sure that there is adequate slack in the leads. Then using the cable ties supplied, secure all of the wiring to make sure it does not get pinched or stretched during operation. 5

INSTALLING THE BENT ROD 1. Place a quick disconnect on the long straight threaded part of the rod. On the Z bend place a jam nut and then the other quick disconnect. 2. Place the Electrosteer unit in front of your kicker motor. Press the push button switch to fully extend the gear bar. Attach the steering rod to the ball stud of the fully extended bar. Attach the other end of the steering rod to the ball stud on the kicker motor. Hold the frame in place and run the Electrosteer back and forth. If there is binding or you do not get the full turning radius of your kicker motor you need to change location of the Electrosteer and cut the rod. Measure the distance from the ball studs and cut the rod using a hacksaw. Make sure that you DO NOT cut the rod too short in this step. You may have to cut the rod again. Follow the same procedure as above until the Electrosteer moves freely with out binding the gear bar or any torque on the steering rod. 3. The Gear bar MUST come as close as possible to the center stop in both directions. If you are using the outside holes of the gear bar and the gear bar does not reach the center stop, you will have to move the ball studs to the inside hole position. 4. After you feel that you have the Electrosteer in position securely tighten the Electrosteer to the boat using the screws supplied. 6

OPERATING TIPS It is not necessary to disconnect the steering rod from the kicker ball stud or Electrosteer when tilting your kicker engine. The quick disconnect will automatically move into the correct position. However, it is highly recommended that when using your main engine to move, you disconnect the steering arm from the kicker ball stud. The kicker engine has a tendency to shift from side to side when running your main engine or when trailering. This movement may be enough to put additional stress on the steering arm or ball stud. The simple and easy way to prevent your steering arm from being damaged when running or trailering is to purchase an additional ball stud and mount it on your transom deck so as to attach the loose end that you have disconnected from the kicker ball stud. The other solution is to disconnect both ends from the ball studs and store the rod in a convenient location. MAINTENANCE The following is a list of items to do periodically so to insure the longevity of your Electrosteer. 1. Frequently check the screws holding the Electrosteer to your boat. 2. Frequently check the ball stud and stop bolt. Make sure they are tight. 3. Apply a small amount of grease to the plastic glide bar 4. Always check electrical connections. If you need to purchase additional or replacement parts look to page 9 for a complete listing. 7
