The club will bring all the food and drinks! Please contact a member of board if you would like to Blue volunteer Oval to Office host this Message event. Typically April 2012 we have by about Scott 20 Taylor people in attendance. From the Blue Oval Office July / August 2012 Fellow AZ Cougar members, how are you? With the high heat and humidity, it seems we are living in Florida now. I think everyone is looking forward to September and October! Hopefully your Cougar is resting safely in the garage at the current time. I hope everyone has had a great summer so far. I know that I have been busy with other activities, and just spent a week in northern Arizona near the Williams area. That is a very beautiful area, and the weather was great! Maybe I should look for a summer cabin. (LOL). I also was able to spend a few days over the 4 th of July holiday in California near the beach. It was great to get away for even a short time. As always I kept my eyes open for any Cougars in the area, and I did find one very nice 1968 Cougar XR7 hardtop in the Topanga Canyon area. I wasn t able to talk with the owner, but it was good to see someone still able to drive their classic Cougar. I m still seeking someone who can spend 2 to 4 hours a month, and be our new official Newsletter editor. If you have any desire to write, compile, or edit or play with photos, then this is the job for you. Contact me anytime to let me know how you can help out. You really don t have to write that much, mostly just coordinate the newsletter efforts, follow up with people, insert cool photos, etc. Enjoy the photos below, which are courtesy of our long distance Cougar friend Phillip Cutter from Australia. If you would like to volunteer to provide an update about yourself or your Cougar for this section, please contact Scott Taylor thanks! I m not in the market Those words have been uttered by most classic car enthusiasts at one time or another, but in this case they were hollow. After just completing a 7 year restoration on my 67 XR-7 GT, starting another Cougar project was the last thing on my mind. Someday I d planned on building an AC Cobra kit, but at that time I was Cougared out Then it happened, and email from a Chevy guy in Tucson who d bought his first Cougar. An XR-7 GT like mine, so he d chosen me to email from the AzCC s website. After some discussion on VIN codes and looking at his pictures, we d come to the conclusion that someone had really wanted an XR-7 GT so had added the emblems, in-dash tach, and wooden dash face. Unswayed, he still planned to fix it up, a 67 Standard with nice options: 289-4V, AT, PS, PDB, A/C, console, tilt-away, and styled-steel wheels. I offered to help find parts and then didn t hear from him for several months. Finally a call that he was selling his project cars due to finances, hoping I knew someone in the market. Nope, sure don t, but I ll keep it in mind. How much? I just had to ask $600 he said. Shoot, I couldn t pass that up. For $600 I d either part it out or build a Cougar I could drive every day. That week I was the proud owner of this 67 Standard: She had potential, once you got past the rusty roof and deep knock in the tired 289. I was hoping it was just a rod bearing, and planned to patch the roof with fiber-glass. A quick, low cost driver Ya right The #8 cylinder had over-heated and metal was traded between the cylinder wall and piston skirt on a block that was Arizona Cougar Club Page 9
already.060 over-bored. A completely clogged water-pump caused by massive amounts of radiator Stop- Leak was to blame, so the engine came out, apart, and to the dump. Patch the roof? Nope, the bodyshop wouldn t do it. Luckily another AzCC member, Bill Basore, had an idea. He d seen a wrecked 68 sunroof car on ebay, located in Phoenix, that he wanted parts from. I could use that roof and make a 67 sunroof car. Thanks Bill! A true Cougar enthusiast 6 months and several thousand dollars later, she emerged with a new life as a 67 red sunroof car. It s an ongoing project, not looking much different than this photo, but the parts collection is healthy and the old suspension is long gone. She ll get new suspension, steering, brakes, brake and fuel lines. The engine bay will eventually be filled with a waiting 331 cubic inch 5.0 roller-cam block and AOD transmission sporting a non-lockup 2400 rpm torque converter and shift-kit. The old 8 rear-end has been replaced with 9 inches of 3.70 geared Traction-Lok. She ll be a strong runner, ready for freeway cruising and stop-light blasts alike, and at the rate it s taking, will be my second 7 year project Cougar, unless of course someone else calls with a deal too good to pass up Best Regards, AZ Cougar Club member - Dan Gire Arizona Cougar Club Page 10
