Versin: 3 Page: 2 f 7 1.0 Intrductin 1.1 Purpse The purpse f these guidelines is t establish safe wrk practices t prtect all Emry emplyees, students, visitrs, and cntractrs frm wrkplace hazards assciated with the use f verhead and gantry cranes as prescribed in the Occupatinal Safety and Health Administratin (OSHA) Standard - 29 CFR 1910.179 Overhead and Gantry Cranes. While sme entities and/r divisins f Emry may have additinal r mre stringent guidelines, the guidelines utlined in this dcument shall serve as the minimum requirements fr all. 1.2 Scpe These guidelines are inclusive f Emry emplyees, including Emry Healthcare (EHC), faculty, staff, students, cntractrs, and ther peple wh wrk with r in clse prximity t verhead and gantry cranes. 1.3 Definitins Bridge. Part f a crane cnsisting f girders, trucks, end ties, ftwalks and drive mechanism which carries the trlley r trlleys. Bumper. An energy absrbing device fr reducing impact when a mving crane r trlley reaches the end f its permitted travel. Ftwalk. The walkway with a handrails attached t the bride r trlley fr access purpses. Gantry crane. Similar t an verhead crane except that the bridge fr carrying the trlley is rigidly supprted n tw r mre legs running n fixed rails r ther runway. Hist. An apparatus exerting a frce fr lifting r lwering. Limited switch. A switch which is perated by sme part r mtin f a pwer-driven machine r equipment t alter the electrical circuit assciated with the machine r equipment. Overhead crane. An verhead crane is a crane with a mveable bridge carrying a mvable fixed histing mechanism and traveling n an verhead fixed runway structure. Rated lad. The maximum lad fr which a crane r hist is designed and built. The rated lad is prvided n the equipment nameplate. Stp. A device t limit the travel f a trlley r crane bridge. Trlley. The unit which travels n the bridge rails and carries the histing mechanism. Truck. The unit cnsisting f a frame, wheels, bearings and axels which supprts the bridge girders r trlleys.

Versin: 3 Page: 3 f 7 1.4 Training Requirements Only designated and prperly trained persnnel are permitted t perate verhead and gantry cranes. Training includes a review f the fllwing infrmatin as well as any manufacturer infrmatin r required training related t the equipment being used. 2.0 General Requirements Persnnel perating cranes must wear the apprpriate persnal prtective equipment, including: Head prtectin hard hats Ft prtectin safety shes with metatarsal prtectin Hand prtectin wrk glves Eye prtectin safety glasses Any ther PPE deemed necessary fr the area and wrk cnditins. Any mdificatin r rerating fr a new lad must be certified by a qualified engineer r the equipment manufacturer. Outdr strage bridges must be prvided with autmatic rail clamps. Ensure that the rated lad f the crane is clearly marked n each side f the crane. The marking must be clearly legible frm the grund r flr. Maintain a minimum f three inches verhead and tw inches laterally between the cranes and bstructins. Ensure that each crane is equipped with a pwer traveling mechanism is equipped with an effective warning signal. 3.0 Inspectin Prir t initial use f a new r altered crane, cnduct an inspectin t ensure cmpliance with this dcument. Prir t each use f a crane, cnduct a visual inspectin t ensure prper functinality f the crane and all perating mechanisms. The visual inspectin checks fr signs f excessive wear f all cmpnents, such as cracks, leaks, defrmatin, twist distrtin r ther damage that culd interfere with prper peratin. Perfrm a mnthly inspectin and maintain dcumentatin. Dcumentatin must include the date f the inspectin, name f inspectr, equipment inspected and nted deficiencies. Items t be inspected include: Defrmed, cracked r crrded cmpnents. Lse blts r rivets. Cracked r wrn sheaves and drums. Any wrn, cracked, crrded r distrted parts such as clips, hks, snaps, bearings, gears, shafts, rllers, sprckets, etc. Brakes: peratinal and in gd cnditin; and fr excessive wear. Lad rating signage is present. Electrical apparatus in gd cnditin. Rpes and/r chains in gd cnditin with n excessive wear, stretch, twist, distrtin, kinking, cuts, crrsin etc. All guards securely fastened. Clearance frm bstructin. Remte cntrl peratinal.

Gasline, diesel, electric r ther pwer surces fr imprper perfrmance r nncmpliance with safety requirements. Inspect cranes that are nt in regular use at least semi-annually. Perfrm a full mnthly inspectin prir t use n any crane left idle fr lnger than six mnths. 4.0 Testing Prir t initial use and in additin t inspectin, perfrm peratinal testing n new and altered cranes t ensure cmpliance with the abve sectin as well as the fllwing functins. Histing and lwering. Trlley travel. Bridge travel. Lcking and braking mechanisms. Safety device functins. Determine the trip setting f hist limit switches by testing with an empty hk traveling in increasing speeds up t the maximum speed. Lcate the actuating mechanism f the limit switch s that it will trip the switch, under all cnditins, in sufficient time t prevent cntact f the hk r hk blck with any part f the trlley. Perfrm a rated lad with a test lad n mre than 125 percent f the rated lad unless therwise recmmended by the manufacturer. Keep testing dcumentatin readily available. 5.0 Maintenance Establish a preventative maintenance prgram fr each piece f equipment based n the manufacturer s recmmendatin. Only designated persnnel can perfrm maintenance, adjustments r repairs n cranes. Crrect any unsafe cnditin r deficiency befre perating the crane. Prmptly repair r replace cmpnents as needed fr safe peratin. Make adjustments as needed t ensure crrect functining f cmpnents. Prir t any maintenance, ensure the fllwing precautins are taken: Mve the crane that is t be repaired t a lcatin where it will cause the lease interference with ther peratins. Place all cntrllers in the ff psitin. De-energize all electrical and mechanical energy surces in accrdance with required lckut/tagut prcedures and equipment-specific prcedures. Place Warning and Out f Order signs n the crane and n the flr beneath r n the hk where it is visible frm the flr. Ensure that rail stps r ther suitable means are prvided where ther cranes are in peratin t prevent interference with the idle crane. Befre resuming peratin f the crane, reinstall all guards, reactivate safety devices and remve tls and equipment.

Versin: 3 Page: 5 f 7 6.0 Lad Handling D nt lad the crane beynd its rated capacity except fr test purpses. When attaching a lad: Ensure the rpes r chains used t attach the lad are free f kinks r twists and are nt wrapped arund the lad. Attach the lad t the lad blck hd using slings r ther apprved devices. Handle the sling carefully t clear all bstacles. Prperly secure and balance the lad prir t lifting mre than a few inches. D nt kink the hist rpe and d nt twist multiple lines arund each ther. Attach the lad in a manner that prevents swinging. When mving a lad: Ensure there is n sudden acceleratin r deceleratin f a mving lad. Never hist, lwer r travel while any emplyee is n the lad r hk. D nt carry lads ver peple. D nt leave the cntrls while a lad is suspended. 7.0 Brakes Ensure that brakes have ample thermal capacity fr the frequency f peratin. When necessary, prvide hlding brakes with an adjustment methds t cmpensate fr wear. Ensure that the wearing surface f hlding brake drums and discs is smth. Brakes fr hists: Ensure that each independent histing unit f the crane is equipped with at least ne self-setting brake, called a hlding brake, as well as a cntrl braking methd t prevent ver speeding. Apply hlding brakes autmatically when pwer is remved. Ensure that the pwer cntrl braking methd is capable f maintaining safe lwering speeds f rated lads. Brakes fr trlleys and bridges Ensure that ft perated brakes d nt require mre than 70 punds f frce t develp the manufacturer s rated brake trque. Apply brakes by mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic r gravity means. Ensure the ft brake pedals have a nn-slip surface. Ensure the brakes are sufficient size t stp the trlley r bridge within a distance in feet equal t ten percent f full lad speed in feet per minute when traveling at full speed with a full lad. 8.0 Electrical equipment Ensure that the cntrl circuit vltage des nt exceed 600 vlts AC r DC. Enclse equipment in such a way as t prtect live parts frm accidental cntact under nrmal perating cnditins as well as t prtect frm il, grease and misture. Keep guards in place t prevent cntact with live electrical parts.

Prvide adequate ventilatin in enclsures fr resistrs and means t prevent accumulatin f cmbustible matter near ht parts. Ensure that the pwer supply t the runway cnductrs is cntrlled by a switch r circuit breaker lcated n a fixed structure accessible frm the flr. Prvide the histing mtin f all electrical traveling cranes with an ver travel limit switch in the histing directin. Pendant push statins must meet the fllwing requirements: The statin must be supprted in such a way as t prtect the wiring frm strain. The vltage must nt exceed 150 vlts fr AC and 300 vlts fr DC. Cntrl bxes must be signed t prevent electrical shck and clearly marked fr identificatin f functins. Pushbuttns must return t the ff psitin when pressure is release by the peratr. 9.0 Histing Equipment 9.1 Sheaves Ensure that sheave grves are smth and free frm surface defects that culd cause rpe damage. Install guards n sheaves carrying rpes t guide the rpe back int the grve when the lad is applies. Equip all running sheaves with means fr lubricatin. Ensure that mechanisms are in place t prevent rpes frm being siled and t prevent the chain frm binding r catching during peratin. 9.2 Rpes Fllw the manufacturer s recmmendatins fr sue f histing rpes, scketing, spacing and number f rpe clips, hks and cmpressed fittings. The rated lad divided by the number f parts r rpe shall nt exceed 20 percent f the nminal breaking strength f the rpe. Leave n less than tw wraps f rpe n the drum when the hk is in its extreme lw psitin. Securely attach rpe ends t the drum r use a manufacturer apprved scket arrangement. Use replacement rpe that is the same size, grade and cnstructin f the riginal rpe supplied by the manufacturer. If a lad is supprted by mre than ne part f a rpe, equalize the tensin in the parts. 10.0 Ftwalks and Ladders If sufficient headrm is available n cranes with a trlley running n tp f the girders, prvide a ftwalk alng the entire length f the bridge. Prvide n less than 48 inches f headrm. Ensure that ftwalks can sustain a distributed lad f at least 50 punds per square ft and have an anti-slip walking surface.

Versin: 3 Page: 7 f 7 Equip gantry cranes with fixed ladders r stairways extending frm the grund t the ftwalk r cab platfrm. Ensure that stairways have rigid and substantial metal handrails and anti-slip walking surfaces. 11.0 Stps, Bumpers, Rail Sweeps and Guards Prvide stps at the limits f travel f the trlley that are fastened t resist applied frce. On each crane bridge, ensure that bumpers r ther autmatic means are capable f stpping the crane at an average rate f deceleratin nt t exceed 3ft/s/s when traveling in either directin at 20 percent f the rated lad speed. On each crane trlley, ensure that bumpers r ther autmatic means are capable f stpping the trlley at an average rate f deceleratin nt t exceed 4.7 ft/s/s when traveling in either directin at ne-third f the rated lad speed. Equip bridge trucks with rail sweeps extending belw the tp f the rails and in frnt f the truck wheels. Install guards t prevent rpes frm chafing r fuling if the run clse t ther parts. Guard expsed mving parts shuld be securely fastened.
