Ryan St. Brillion, WI 54110 www.ariens.com Product Family: Ariens 917031 Log Splitter Subject: Improper Engine Bolt Torque Dealer Action: Realign engine to pump before sale Model Serial Number Description 917031 000106 000419 Ariens 27-Ton Log Splitter Ariens Company has learned that the engine bolts may be improperly torqued on units in the serial number range listed above. Over time this may result in the engine moving out of alignment with the pump, causing failure of the urethane spider and pump couplers. Dealers will be sent, at no charge, an alignment tool (p/n 04651900) and the number of replacement lock nuts (p/n 06543100) required to repair each unit in their inventory. Once the tool arrives, dealers are to align the engine to the pump per the attached instructions. Units still in their shipping containers can be reworked without removing them from the container. Upon completion of the repair Dealers are to place a check mark on the model/serial number label with a black-colored permanent marker. Some of the units in the affected serial number range have already been reworked at the factory. These units will be identified with a blue check mark. See below. Use a black permanent marker to place a check mark on the model/serial number tag. Units reworked at the factory will have a blue check mark. Once repairs are completed, these units can be retailed. Dealers are to file a warranty claim using a flat rate code of 17999 for each affected unit. Dealers will reimbursed 0.50 hour at their standard shop labor rate for each unit repaired. Read, understand, and follow all safety practices in Operator s Manual before beginning. REMOVAL 1. Loosen, but DO NOT remove two self-tapping fasteners retaining coupler cover and remove cover. See Figure 2. Package Contents Check the contents of your kit for the parts listed below. Also see Figure 1. 3. Support pump and remove four 5/16 x 1" pump-mount hex bolts and nuts. Retain bolts; dispose of nuts. See Figure 4. NOTICE: For ease of access, use a 1/4" drive socket and standard-length socket. 5. Remove coupler, urethane spider and square key from crankshaft. Retain all parts. See Figure 6. Urethane Spider Figure 4 4. Gently hang pump below mounting plate. See Figure 5. CAUTION: Unit contains approximately 13 L (14 qt) of oil. DO NOT allow hoses to disconnect. Figure 6 6. Loosen engine hex bolts enough to allow engine to move freely on mount. DO NOT remove bolts. See Figure 7. Use an 8" (or longer) extension to access rear bolt. INSTALLATION 1. Position engine so that pump-alignment tool (item 1) can be fully installed on crankshaft and into pump-mount opening. See Figure 8. 2. Tighten engine bolts and torque to 34 47 N m (25 35 lb-ft). IMPORTANT: DO NOT remove alignment tool until after engine bolts are torqued. 3. Remove alignment tool. 4. Install square key and upper coupler onto crankshaft. Coupler must be aligned flush with the end of crankshaft. See Figure 9. 1 Ensure that alignment tool is fully engaged in pump-mount opening. Ensure that coupler and square key are flush with crankshaft end. Figure 9 Figure 8 5. Install upper set screw and torque to 36 40 N m (8 9 lb-ft). DO NOT overtighten. 6. Reinstall urethane spider onto pump coupler. See Figure 10. Figure 10 07900218 7/16 Page 3 of 4
7. Install pump and retain with four new 5/16 x 1" bolts removed earlier and four locking top flange nuts. (item 2). Ensure that engine and pump couplers and urethane spider are aligned. See Figure 11. IMPORTANT: To minimize gap and ensure positive tooth engagement, ensure pump coupler is pushed tight against the urethane spider and the spider is tight to the engine coupler. 2 Figure 11 8. Ensure that couplers are aligned and install lower set screw into pump coupler. Torque to 36 40 N m (8 9 lb-ft). DO NOT overtighten. See Figure 12. Figure 12 9.
