March 2015 Volume 40 Issue 3 Springfest 2015 represents 33 years since the first Corvair show was held in Helen, Georgia in 1982. Corvair Atlanta is, in part, a historical organization and I am thankful to our Club Historian for providing details about the early Corvair Shows hosted in Helen. It s not completely clear to me what happened in Helen in 2003, but Shock and Awe probably would not have been a good theme for a show that year. Recently, some members of Corvair Atlanta received a message regarding a Corvair Corral at the Mitty on Sunday, 26 April 2015. This is the same weekend of Springfest 2015, however, if anyone is interested in stopping by Road Atlanta that Sunday as they leave Helen in their Corvairs, please let me know. The benefit to the Corral is free parking in the infield at Road Atlanta, but I believe there may be an admission fee. Of course the benefit to Corvair Atlanta is that it gives the Club and the Cars some public exposure, which I feel is needed to increase our membership. I will get more information on the Corral at the Mitty and send details to members in an e-mail. Finally if anyone has any articles to contribute to the Connecting Rod please let John O'Harra know. Putting the Connecting Rod out every month takes a lot of effort and John has done a great job for Corvair Atlanta for several years. Hope to see all of our members at Springfest 2015! -Tom The President s Corner Editor s Note: Dates, times, and locations have been updated for events and meeting schedules. News and Notes http://www.corvair.org/2015convention/ New Cooker just purchased by Corvair Atlanta, Heart of GA and Queen City Corvair Club. What a a beauty, she cooks, she warms, she dices, and dances for money. The cooker was funded using the SpringFest account at a mere $3,000. Used primarily for the SpringFest event but it's available to the three clubs to use for club events. Contact your club officers for more information. AS UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED MARKS 50 YEARS, CORVAIR VALUES HIT ALL-TIME HIGH This year marks the 50th anniversary of Ralph Nader s book Unsafe at Any Speed," in which the young Harvard-trained lawyer/activist did a serious hatchet job on what was a very interesting and unconventional American car. But the Chevy Corvair is clearly having the last laugh. Ironically, as the book turns 50, Corvair prices have reached an all-time high. The price for just about every sub-model of Corvair is at an all-time high. The ultradesirable turbocharged Corsa convertible that in 2006 cost about $15,000 in excellent condition now goes for about $20,000. Ironically, the humble-butcute 1961 Corvair Lakewood station wagon is up just as much; an example in excellent condition that would have cost you about $7,400 in 2006 will now set you back about $12,800.
