7. A suitabl nclosur must b providd for th motor to prvnt accss to moving parts. Extra caution should b obsrvd around a motor that is automatically startd or has automatic rstting rlays or is rmotly startd in cas such starting mans has not bn proprly disabld and th motor starts unxpctdly. 8. Ensur all shaft kys prsnt on moving parts ar fully captiv bfor th motor is startd. 9. Ensur adquat safguards hav bn mad to protct against th consquncs of a brak failur, particularly on cran/hoist applications. 10. TECO UL listd xplosion proof motors must only b usd in countris whr th UL crtification is rcognisd as bing appropriat for th application. Thy ar constructd to comply with UL rgulations and any rpairs to thm must b mad by TECO or a UL listd srvic cntr in ordr to maintain th UL listing. 11. Whn using a motor in a variabl spd application nsur that it will not b drivn abov its saf maximum spd limit. Consult TECO if in doubt. Also nsur th motor is not ovrloadd: It should b rmmbrd that as spd rducs, fans drivn by th main shaft do not provid as much cooling air and an auxiliary fan may b rquird. 12. Protct th motor from ovrload, prfrably by monitoring th winding tmpratur. TECO can fit thrmistors to giv indication that th winding is gtting too hot and th thrmistors can b connctd to switchgar that will automatically trip on th signal from th thrmistors. 13. Capacitors Capacitors such as in singl phas motors may rmain chargd vn whn isolatd from th mains supply. Discharg capacitors and arth thir trminals bfor handling any connctions. Location 1. Motors with drip-proof nclosurs ar intndd for us whr th atmosphr is rlativly clan, dry, wll vntilatd and non-corrosiv. Rfr to BS 4999 Part 105 for mor dtaild information on suitability of a particular nclosur rating. 2. Totally-nclosd motors may b installd whr dirt, moistur or dust ar prsnt and in outdoor locations. Rfr to BS 4999 Part 105 for mor dtaild information on suitability of a particular nclosur rating. 3. Explosion proof motors hav many diffrnt catgoris bcaus hazardous atmosphrs can consist of many diffrnt gass which may or may not b prsnt continuously. Individual countris/usrs can diffr in thir safty rquirmnts so th suitability of an xplosion proof motor for any particular hazardous location must b assssd against th standards and spcifications in forc for that location. Thy must not b usd in hazardous locations unlss it has bn stablishd that thy do comply with th safty standards and spcifications in forc for that location. 4. Typ N motors to BS 5000: Part 16 hav bn dsignd to rduc th liklihood of sparking in normal opration and hav surfac tmpratur limitations. Thy may b accptabl in locations whr an xplosiv gas-air mixtur is not likly to occur in normal opration and if it occurs it will only xist for a short tim. Bfor using any typ N motor in such a location, nsur that safty standards and spcifications in forc for that location prmit its us. 5. Chmical duty nclosd motors ar dsignd for installation in locations whr thy may ncountr corrosiv substancs and/or high moistur. Not: In all locations th surroundings must not obstruct th normal flow of vntilating air to and from th motor. Mounting 1. Ensur th orintation of th fram is appropriat for th dsign of th motor. For instanc, motors dsignd for B3 (horizontal shaft), may not b not b suitabl without modification for V5 (vrtical shaft) bcaus any drain hols will b in th wrong position, additional fixings may b rquird to prvnt th shaft sliding through th barings and diffrnt barings may b ndd to withstand th thrust forc. Drip proof motors may not b drip proof in th wrong orintation. Consult TECO to stablish whthr a motor may b safly usd in an orintation diffrnt from that ordrd. 2. Whr th motor is to b subjct to a high dgr of vibration (such as on a vibrating scrn), high humidity (typically abov 95%), abnormal ambint tmpratur (typically outsid th rang -20 to +45 C), or high altitud (typically abov 1000mtr) nsur that th motor spcification is appropriat. Installation and Maintnanc Instructions Pag 2 of 5
3. Whn mounting th motor, nsur this is don scurly using stl nuts and bolts through ach of th fixing hols providd, fully tightnd. Whr th location is likly to caus rusting, such as in th prsnc of sa watr, stainlss stl fixing bolts may b an advantag. Whr thr is significant vibration, nsur thr ar shakproof washrs undr th nuts. 4. Whr th drain hols ar to b lft opn, nsur thy ar guardd from accss whn th motor windings ar connctd to a powr supply 5. With a dirctly-coupld load nsur th motor and load shafts ar accuratly alignd and us a flxibl coupling btwn thm. Mounting bolts must b carfully tightnd to avoid alignmnt changs and th alignmnt rchckd to nsur it is corrct whn th bolts ar fully tight. 6. With a sid-coupld load, such as a blt or gar driv, nsur th sid forc on th shaft will not damag th motor. Consult TECO if in doubt. Powr Supply and Connctions 1. Wiring of th motor and its controllr, ovrload protction and arthing should b in accordanc with th currnt dition of th IEE wiring rgulations, EN60204 and all local safty rquirmnts 2. Rfr to th namplat voltag and frquncy to nsur th motor is corrct for th powr supply to which it is to b connctd. Unlss spcifid othrwis th motor may b assumd to b suitabl for th namplat voltag +/- 5% and namplat frquncy +/- 1%. 3. Connction diagrams for th motor ar gnrally supplid with it, ithr on th namplat, fixd to th motor or placd in th trminal box. 4. Tmpratur limiting dvics All TECO UL listd Explosion Proof motors hav tmpratur limiting dvics in th motor nclosur to hlp prvnt xcssiv xtrnal surfac tmpratur of th motor in accordanc with UL standards. Trminals (P1, P2) of thrmal protctors in ths motors must b connctd to th motor control quipmnt according to th connction diagram insid th trminal box. Not: ths motors ar not crtifid for us in hazardous aras in th Europan Union and must only b usd in locations whr th UL rcognition is in forc. Start Up 1. Initially, run th motor unloadd and stablish that th rotation dirction is as rquird. If not, switch off and whn rotation has stoppd: If th motor is a thr-phas motor - intrchang any two phass. If th motor is a singl-phas motor - intrchang th connctions to th auxiliary winding circuit, laving th connctions to th main winding unchangd. 2. Thn start th motor fully loadd. If it dos not start quickly and run smoothly, switch off immdiatly and whn rotation has stoppd, isolat from th powr supply and xamin th assmbly for mchanical faults or poor connctions. 3. If thr is xcssiv vibration it could b causd by poorly alignd couplings, loos mounting bolts, lack of rigidity in th supports, transmittd vibration from adjacnt machinry, tc. Excssiv vibration can lad to motor damag, for instanc to th barings making thm noisy, and hnc vibration should b minimisd. 4. Ensur th currnt drawn is commnsurat with that shown on th namplat and that th currnts in ach phas ar similar. 5. If a singl phas motor dos not start, this may b du to th intrnal starting switch not closing whn th rotor is stationary or a faulty starting capacitor. Long Trm Storag and Humid Environmnts If th motor has bn stord for an xtnsiv priod or subjctd to advrs moistur, nsur th insulation rsistanc is gratr than 1MOhm bfor switching on. Also, rgras th barings and if thy ar rusty, rplac thm. Whn th insulation rsistanc is not gratr than 1MOhm, dry out th motor as dscribd blow. If aftr drying out th insulation rsistanc is still not gratr than 1MOhm, th motor will nd rpairing. Drying Out This may b carrid out ithr: 1. By baking in an ovn at up to 90 C. Ensur th intrior and xtrior of th ovn ar wll vntilatd. Installation and Maintnanc Instructions Pag 3 of 5
2. By locking th rotor so it cannot mov and conncting a low voltag to th motor windings. Gradually incras th voltag from zro until th currnt is about on third th rating plat valu. Trim th voltag as ncssary so that th winding tmpratur rmains blow 90 C. Drying out is complt whn th insulation rsistanc stops changing. Maintnanc Inspction Inspct th motor at rgular intrvals. Ensur it is kpt clan with clar vntilation opnings, thr is no xcssiv vibration and noiss mittd from th motor ar normal. Ensur fixings and fastnrs hav not loosnd nor so corrodd that ithr thir strngth has bn rducd significantly or arthing has bn impaird. Ensur also that lctrical connctions ar tight and uncorrodd and that arthing is intact. Inspct shaft sals and trminal box gaskts to nsur thy ar in position and not significantly worn. Contact TECO if th sal/gaskt typs on th motor ar unknown. Examin th paint finish and rpaint if ncssary to avoid xcssiv corrosion. Ensur that shaft couplings ar fixd firmly and that shaft alignmnt is corrct. Ensur also that thr is no build up of liquid insid th motor that would advrsly affct its prformanc and drain if thr is. Lubrication Motors with doubl shildd (suffix "ZZ" on baring typ) barings ar lubricatd for lif and cannot b rlubricatd. Largr frams (usually Frams D200 and abov, D180 2 pol and C180 and abov) in particular hav rgrasing facilitis. Ths motors ar shippd alrady-grasd and th gras should b rplacd at rgular intrvals. Th lngth of th intrval varis with siz of motor and how it is usd. Th tabl blow givs a guid to rlubrication intrvals. Excssiv or too frqunt lubrication may actually damag th motor.
