Ride Coordinator OK here we are into the 11 th month of the year.november. Do any of you remember what comes up this month?? IT IS VETERAN'S DAY. November the 11 th to be exact.. Most of our generation can only remember world war II, Korea, Vietnam, the cold war,and maybe some I missed out on. Of course there is the mess going on now./ GOD BLESS EM. So in rememberance I would like to point this out to you IT IS THE SOLDIER Not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of press IT IS THE SOLDIER Not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech IT IS THE SOLDIER Not the campus organizer, who has given us the right to demonstrate IT IS THE SOLDIER Not the lawyer, who has given us he right to a fair trail IT IS THE SOLDIER Not the pastor, who has given us the right to worship IT IS THE SOLDIER Not the politician, who has given us the right to vote IT IS THE SOLDIER Who salutes the flag. serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who gives the protester the right to BURN the flag.. SO PLEASE..If you Happen to come across a service man or woman, thank them for their service. But remember this Watch out for the guy, behind the guy in front of you That guy is you, and we sure want to keep you around AMEN Lynn! (Editor comment). 5
Rider Education November 2017 Motorcycle Hydroplaning I recently encountered a large, standing water puddle on I-95 during a rain shower while riding my trike. I was prepared to have to deal with hydroplaning, but, to my surprise, the trike took it in stride without any difficulty. I wonder why? When any vehicle hydroplanes in standing water (as little as 0.1 inch), the tires become waterborne (I like to say the tires go water skiing!) and, therefore, are not in contact with the road. With no road contact, tires cannot produce steering nor braking action. On a motorcycle, the front wheel ceases to rotate and the rear wheel(s) spin(s) according to throttle position. All this says that a hydroplaning motorcycle goes ballistic and only reacts to the Newton s laws of motion, not the operator. The operator becomes a passenger! Hydroplaning is possible whenever water accumulates to a depth of onetenth of an inch or more for at least 30 feet and a vehicle moves through it at 50 miles per hour or faster. For a given vehicle, say the Honda Goldwing, the major hydroplaning variables are now vehicle speed, tire tread depth, and tire air pressure. Here s the impact of each variable on decreasing hydroplaning potential. Decreasing hydroplaning potential: Vehicle speed Slower speeds Tire tread depth Deeper tread depth Tire pressure Higher tire pressure (but not above owner s handbook limits) At slower speeds, the tires are able to push the water out of the way and remain in contact with the road surface. Deeper tread depth provides an escape path for the water. Higher tire pressure decreases hydroplaning potential because the tires can push back harder to prevent lift off from the pavement. So what have I learned about hydroplaning encounters? 6
Don t do anything sudden. Smoothly decrease the throttle. Definitely don t brake. Ride it out. Don t overreact! Doing nothing is better than doing something wrong! Bikes may tend to slide sideways, but will tend to straighten themselves if the rider stays off the brakes and throttle. Trikes with two rear wheels are inherently directionally stable, i.e., the two-rear-wheel trike will tend to straighten itself if a sideslip develops. Do not brake when hydroplaning! Since there is no rolling friction, the brakes will lock the wheels and when the hydroplaning ceases, the locked wheels will produce a nasty slide in whatever direction they are pointed. This is the perfect setup for a high-side crash when the rear wheels suddenly grab the road. Don t use cruise control if hydroplaning conditions exist. You need complete and instantaneous control of the throttle, engine, and wheels. In addition, your habit pattern to disengage the cruise control might be to hit the brakes, which is exactly the wrong thing to do. Finally, why didn t my trike hydroplane, or did it? We really need these reminders especially this time of the year 7
