The Prez Sez... The Prez Sez November/December 2013 Our November meeting was very productive. We finished up the last minute details for our annual Christmas Party December 7 th at Vincenzo s. Hope to see everyone there. If you are still interested please contact either Mike & Patty Demeter or myself. We also had a big discussion on the clubs 40 th anniversary. It kind of snuck up on us. It is actually 2013. We had a pizza party celebration at our November meeting to kick things off. We also plan to order some commemorative clothing (shirts & sweatshirts) to mark the occasion. There will be other information in this newsletter if you are interested in obtaining any. Our big idea/plan would be to have this clothing on hand by our swap meet in February. We think it would be cool to all be wearing commemorative clothing that day. We will be investigating some other 40 th year ideas like license plates, window stickers or patches. There will be more to come on that in the near future. We are also planning some winter activities and/or trips. The first one will be on Saturday December 14 th and Wes s house. Wes could use some help installing a new transmission cable. The plan is to be there at 0900. Plan to come out and help and we will eat pizza as a reward. A trip being discussed is going to the American Sign museum On Saturday January 18 th. If we have over 12 people the coat is $10 a person. The thought on this one is to meet there at 10:00 am and have lunch afterward. If you are interested in this trip you can sign up at the Christmas Party of send an email to one of the officers. Another trip being considered is going to the Antique Boat Connection in March. There will be more to come on that one in the future. Another topic discussed at the meeting is voting for next year s officers. This will be done at the Christmas party. Ballots will also be in this month s newsletter. It looks like we have some new people nominated so far. We have Wes Greiwe for President and Greg Bodenburg for Vice President. Mike Demeter was nominated for Treasury and Ralph Gubser for Secretary. If you are interested in getting in the running please contact one of the current officers. One last thing, as you can see I am not on the ballot this year. I have thoroughly enjoyed being your President for the last several years. As I have mentioned many times over the years, this club is the best club I have ever been associated with. You have all made leading this club easy as pie and I really appreciate it. I will continue to be an active member helping where I can. Thanks Again. See you at the Christmas Party and the future meetings. The CCC Rules!!! See you at the next meeting... Vairs Rule!

Just-A-Minute MINUTES OF NOVEMBER MEETING Meeting called to order by Joe at 8:04 p.m. There were 17 members in attendance. Mike reported a balance of $3915.38 in the club treasury. OLD BUSINESS The club Christmas party is slated to be held at Vincenzo's on Saturday, December 7 at 6:30 p.m. We ask that those attending bring a present valued at about $20 for the gift exchange. "Stealing" of gifts to be allowed and encouraged. NEW BUSINESS The club is tentatively planning a trip to the American Sign Museum on Saturday, January 11 at 10 a.m. If we have 10 or more attending the price will be $10 per person. We also plan to meet somewhere for lunch after the tour. Greg has volunteered to check with the Antique Boat Connection regarding a visit there sometime in March. Mike and Patty have checked into having 40th anniversary club shirts made. Proposed designs and colors to be presented in the next newsletter. We hope to have the shirts available in time for the swap meet in February. A club tech session to replace the PG shift cable in Wes' convertible is being planned for Saturday, December 14. Final details in the next newsletter. Nominations for the club officers for 2014 are as follows: President: Wes Greiwe Vice-President: Greg Bodenburg Treasurer: Mike Demeter Secretary: Anthony Johnson Motion to adjourn at 9:03 p.m., seconded by Hank Brav and Don Berding. Respectfully submitted. Ralph Gubser, Secretary

Club Shirt Run Club Members. We are going to order some new clothing to commemorate our clubs 40 th Anniversary. We will have various selections but they will be ordered by interest and the club will not be stocking them. The pictures show the artwork we will be getting. Our Ohio logo will be on the back and a version of our CCC club logo will be on the front. We plan to modify the front logo with some type of 40 th anniversary verbiage. The following are the options we will have and the approximate pricing. hort Sleeve Tees - $10 Long Sleeve Tees - $13 Regular Sweat Shirts - $26 Hooded Sweat Shirts - $28 Colors will be Blue, Red, Gray and White. Special colors are available if requested. Delivery is approximately 2 to 3 weeks. In order to have in time for our annual swap meet we must be placing our order by early January. If you are interested in ordering please call or email your orders to either Patty Demeter or Joe VonDerHaar. You can also make your order at the Christmas party or the January meeting.

Loaded with Loadsides By Joe VonDerHaar The Corvair Loadside may not be the most valuable Corvair in the world but they are indeed the rarest. With just 2844 built in 1961and a mere 369 made in 1962, they are the lowest produced of all the models. There is a reason for this. The Loadside was the least practical of the truck line. Without the handy ramp gate like the Rampside, getting items in the front part of the uneven bed was not the greatest. There was an optional load leveling floor to try and help that but that made some the caring capacity unusable. If the Loadside would had made it to production as it was envisioned in concept form, the story may have been different. With the Corvair line including the trucks targeted to go after products like the Volkswagen, the Loadside was intended, and named, to include a side opening cargo compartment to make use of the space under the leveled floor. This would have been competitive with the Volkswagen Transporter truck. For whatever reason, this part of the design never made it to production. Concept & What Could have Been

What Became Real So, with the 1962 Loadside, at 369 units, being the lowest produced model, what are the odds three (3) of them would find their way into the Cincinnati Corvair Club? With almost 1% of original product and not sure how many actually survived in our club that makes us Loaded with Loadsides. But how did this happen? Even though I am the happy owner of one of them, Spencer Duffey is the driving force in bringing two of them to Ohio. Spencer s white truck is imported from California. My red truck started life in New Mexico and Spencer was nice enough to let me be the current owner. Ralph Gubser brought the latest Loadside to our club with his recent acquisition of his blue truck from Utah. One interesting fact is it appears that if it were not for our US government and corporations the sales of the Corvair truck line would have been even less. Fleet sales appear to be a good percentage of sales. The phone company, different branches of the military and even the department of agriculture made fleet purchases. Two of the three trucks in our club look to be fleet buys.

Spencer s Truck Spencer has had his California truck since 2006. Spencer reports he is just this year started to get it ready for paint and restoration. He is planning a larger power plant, A/C, bucket seats, Rhino lining, and a bed cover. MAYBE some special wheels! (Keep some originals around for the parade if possible JTV) The truck is from California and has very little rust to repair. It is a 4-speed, 80 hp, 3.89:1 final drive with about 66 k miles. It has the rare 431N custom deluxe trim package. The paint code is 541G - I think that it was white with a red stripe.

Ralph s Truck Ralph is just taking delivery on his Utah truck as this article is being written. His truck was originally fleet ordered (special tag on the dash) for the US Navy. It has a SPEC paint code and was believed to be Navy Gray when new. It has been upgraded to an 110hp and is a 4-speed. It also has the rare gas heater option which may also be part of the Navy order specifications. Ralph s truck is in great shape with a newer paint job, Rhino lined bed and custom wheels. Ralph reports he is going to drive the truck for a while but does plan to install A/C in the future.

Joe s Truck Joe has had his New Mexico truck since 2011 after obtaining it from Spencer. This truck was also a fleet order truck (extra characters C-62-200 on the VIN tag) for the US Forestry Service. It has a SPEC paint code and looks to have been some type of white or light gray. It still has the 80hp engine and is a Powerglide. It has the gas heater option as well as the government contract D6-52 auxiliary brake/ signal light option. It also has the factory 4-way flasher option. This truck needs a little more work than Spencer s & Ralph s. Plans are to install a better engine and get it on the road in its current form. I have not decided if it should be restored or left as some type of distressed old truck. We will just see where the future will take us. As write this article I received the latest edition of Hemming Classic Car. Guess what is on the cover? A Corvair Rampside truck! The trucks seem to be making a neat comeback. I know their some other trucks in the club (Dave Schwettman - Rampside, for one). Let s work to get them all on the road. We can even go after more Loadsides to corner more of the market here in Cincinnati. Good hunting!
