Sailplane Kits Bob Boucher holding his FAI World Record breaking Malibu In August of 1970 bob set a new FAI closed course sailplane record of 302 km in Waimanalu Hawaii with his Malibu. The model features a fully sheeted wing of 72 inch span and weighs about 4 pounds.
The Super Monterey The Super Monterey co designed by Bob and Roland Boucher used the same fuselage as the smaller Super Malibu but used a 100 inch polyhedral wing. It was designed for thermal soaring in contrast to the smaller Malibu designed for slope soaring. The Super Monterey typically weighs about two pounds ready to fly with a two channel radio installed. Wing Span 100 inches, wing area 720 square inches, length forty inches. The Super Monterey can also be powered by an Astro 05 motor.
The Super Monterey Electric Version The Super Monterey Electric version was designed to be powered by an Astro Cobalt 05 motor and a seven cell 1200 Mahr NiCad battery. Typical weight was 45 to 48 ounces. With today s light weight radio and servos and a brushless 05 motor running on a three cell lithium battery pack the all up weight would probably be two pounds or less. Propeller of choice would be an 8x4 on direct drive and a 12x7 folding prop on the geared motor.
The ASW-15 Standard Class Scale Sailplane Bob Boucher designed this 1/6 scale model kit of The ASW-15 Sailplane. The ASW-15 has a wing span of 100 inches, a wing area of 612 sq. in. and with two channel radio system installed weighs in at about 40 ounces. Bill Watson carved the fuselage plug from which a nickel mold was fashioned. The fuselage was then rotationally molded by our pal Elmer Good of Rotational Molding Co. from high density polyethylene with the color molded in. The ASW-17 Open Class Scale Sailplane My bother and partner Roland Boucher designed this 1/6 scale model of the famous ASW-17 Sailplane. The model has a wing span of 132 inches and a wing area of 800 square inches. All up weigh is four pounds. On its first test in competition Roland captured first place in open sailplane at the North South challenge meet with his ASW-17. Bill Watson carved the fuselage plug for the fiber-glass molds. The Fuselage was of built up fiber glass and resin and finished with white gel coat by our pal Earl Wollsleger in Orange CA. The Californian Open Class Sailplane
Bob Boucher designed the Californian by mating a new extended Super Monterey wing and stab to the rugged roto-molded ASW-15 fuselage. The Californian has excellent thermaling ability and its large tail volume make very stable for beginners. Wing span 111 inches, wing area 834 square inches and flying weight of 44 ounces with three channel radio (rudder, elevator and spoilers)
The Mini Challenger The Astro Mini-Challenger is a slightly smaller version of the Challenger designed for the Astro 035 Cobalt motor. The kit came complete with the 035 motor and a 7x3.5 inch folding prop. Wing span is 60 inches, wing area 400 square inches, and all up flying weight 30 ounces.
John Liberg s Micro Challenger John built his Micro Challenger to ½ scale or 36 inch span and powered it with our Fire Fly motor shown below and two 145 Mahr lithium cells. All up weight is only 5 ounces.
