ALL MATERIAL FOR THE DATA PLATE MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE EDITORS BY THE 10 TH OF THE MONTH! The Director s Column August 2010 By Steve Christy The Kansas City Star this past Friday had an article about Highwoods Properties owners of the Plaza regarding razing a 1920 s vintage Plaza building to make way for a $57 million dollar building that would be the headquarters for the law firm of Polsinelli Shughart. The new building would make no attempt to fit in with the current structures that make the Plaza what it is. It would not take many glitzy gargantuous buildings like the one proposed to completely nullify the charm that makes the Plaza the distinctive architectural character that we all love. Luckily the Kansas City Star and many in Kansas City are up in arms over the proposed change. I m proud to be associated with the Kansas Barn Alliance, Packard Automobile Classics Inc., and our local region, Mid-America Packards. We continue to work to preserve and enjoy our history. This past June the Kansas Barn Alliance hosted the National Barn Alliance in Doniphan County. Prior to the conference we hosted a timber framing barn repair workshop. Last Wednesday I visited the 1868 barn site to observe and take pictures of the foundation work that is being done so the barn can be set back down on the rebuilt stone foundation. This Friday I will be showing pictures of the PAC National in Gettysburg and the National Packard Museum. One of the cars you will see is truly an amazing restoration. I feel privileged to be associated with hobbies that are preserving our rich American history. I look forward to seeing everyone Friday. 17704 PLATTSBURG ROAD, HOLT, MO 64048 2

Tour to the Lackman-Thompson Estate Cancelled! August 28, 2010 We had planned to tour this historic Lenexa, Kansas estate, but were recently informed that it is actually closed to the public. Our next driving tour will be the September Driving Tour September 25, 2010 Check next month s Data Plate for all the details on our tentatively scheduled tour to Jamesport and Gallatin and the McClure museum! Please note that the 38 th Annual Antique Car Show in Lawrence, Kansas will be featuring Packard & Hudson automobiles. Mid-America Packards will feature a display including a good representation of our cars, Packard history, and information on Mid-America Packards as well as PAC. We hope that all our members can bring a display car, or be on hand to promote our favorite marque! NOTICE! The meeting Friday night will have a number of professionally framed Packard ads and pictures as well as other Packard memorabilia that Carol Hoyle has for sale. 2010 Mid-America Packads Annual Chili Supper! When? October 24 th, from 1 4 pm Where? The Vic & Lucille Macek residence, 13625 Midland, Shawnee KS The Maceks will be hosting MAP s annual Chili Supper and Packard gathering this year! The Mid-America Packards went DANCING! The Airline History Museum s Rock Around the Props On July 3 members of Mid-America Packards attended a sock-hop thrown by the fine folks at the Airline History Museum. This was a fund-raiser for the Museum and their effort to restore and house some very significant commercial airliners of the past, including their wonderful, flight-worthy TWA Constellation. The excellent band The Benders provided the dance tunes, the hangar was cleared for a dance floor and did we dance? Yes, we did! The evening included the starting of two Constellation engines, and watching the fireworks from the KC Riverfront area across the river. All in all, a most memorable and fun-filled night! 4

You Scream, I scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM! July in Kansas City is HOT, and the one of the best ways of cooling off is to visit with friends with a bowl of ice cream in front of you. Thanks to Max and Christie Norton for hosting a wonderful afternoon everyone had a great time! 5

Gene Herman Automobile Collection For Sale Gene Herman, a longtime member of the Packard Club, passed away June 1,2010. The Packard National Meets that MAP hosted would not have been such a great success without Gene and Joyce's knowledge of planning such events. The Hermans always treated everyone, regardless of who they were, with respect. As a close personal friend, Gene and I had many long conversations about his cars and what he wanted out of them. He had also wished that they were to be offered locally first. At the request of Joyce, I am going to help her with the liquidation of his prized car collection and auto parts. Also at her request, if you are interested in any of Gene's cars and or parts you are to contact me as she isn't up to dealing with the questions and sales. Please call or email me: Gary Merriman (913) 268-6293 (913) 522-4209 merrimanmom@yahoo.com Gene will be greatly missed.
