A S K T H E MOTOR MEDICS Automotive Advice from the Under The Hood Show I m thinking about purchasing a green vehicle, either a Hybrid or totally electric design but I don t know where to begin. I ll be using this as a second car but hope to use it as much as possible and I will likely purchase one that is new or less than a year old. Can you help me understand some of the differences between the two and give me ideas on what to consider? Thank you, Gary in Lincoln, Nebraska. Dear Gary, The first thing to consider when purchasing either one is how it will be used. As a second car, you have the luxury of using your other car for very long trips. With the Hybrid, this is not a problem but with a fully electric car this would be a show stopper. Hybrid Vehicles all have an internal combustion engine combined with an electric motor that share the load in part to save fuel while Electric Vehicles must be recharged when exhausted. If the Hybrid runs low on electricity it can rely on the engine, which if low on fuel can easily be refilled at the gas station. If you run out of juice on the Electric Vehicle, it means a tow. Before purchasing either model we suggest you spend considerable time researching both options. There are many people who swear by their green vehicles and would never go back to a conventional car, others swear at them. Research is crucial. My Dodge Caravan is five years old and I just don t seem to be able to see the road like I used to. The lenses are still clear and I ve had them adjusted but I don t see well at all. We also have a Cadillac that has those tiny round headlights and I can see great while driving it. Is there anything I can do to my van to get the same light out of it that the car has? I see cars with those really bright lights that blind me when I drive. Can those be legal? I don t want to blind people I just want to see well. Thank you, Glenna in Illinois. Dear Glenna, There is a major difference in lighting systems between your two vehicles. The van uses headlight technology that has been used since the Model T era, it has been refined a bit with better reflectors and bulbs but still has limits. The Cadillac uses H.I.D lamps. High intensity discharge comprised of special ballasts and bulbs, and a focusing projector lens to send the high-power light to the road immediately in front of you and not into oncoming vehicles eyes. You can upgrade to a better conventional bulb in the van but legally you can t use H.I.D bulbs without the projector type lens because it will blind other drivers. Aftermarket projector lenses are available for some vehicles but not the van as far as we know. My car runs pretty good and I am not one to bring it in just to have it checked over once in a while. I am more of the kind of person who visits the shop once the car has broken. After listening to your show I am thinking I may be able to save some money by doing some preventative maintenance instead of waiting for the major breakdowns. Recently my brakes started making some noise but they don t do it every day. How can I tell the difference between needing brake repairs or if it s just a little noise; and if I wanted to be proactive on brake maintenance how often should they be checked? I have been in before for a squeak and they said they were fine, just a little rusty. Thanks, Joanne in Madison Wisconsin Dear Joanne, Routine maintenance will save you money on repairs. Regular inspections should be performed on safety items at each oil change and addressed as needed. These inspections are done for free at most shops so check around if yours does not offer this service. Inspect brakes annually and completely check them right away if there is a change in pedal travel or if noise is heard when applying them accompanied by grinding. Damp mornings can cause rust on the braking surfaces resulting in noise. This should go away after a couple of pedal applications and should not be felt in the pedal. I am a longtime fan of yours and you have saved me countless dollars on repairs by teaching me how to do them myself, and when they are larger than I can handle you have taught me how to look for the best mechanic. I drive a 2001 Ford Explorer and I am getting ready to pull a trailer with it. I have owned it for several years and it has a hitch but no trailer light connector. This will be my first time pulling a trailer with this vehicle. Can I just tap into the tail lights to connect my trailer light connector or do I need something special? I don t want to cause a problem with the vehicle. I have also serviced the transmission and rear end prior to towing as well. Thank you, Darren in Port Saint Lucy Florida. Dear Darren, Great idea you had on the proactive transmission and rear differential service. Depending on the size of the trailer and load you may think about a transmission cooler if the Explorer is not equipped with one. For the trailer wiring you need to make sure you do not overload the electrical system. On this vehicle and many others a tow wiring kit is advised. Available at most auto parts stores this kit takes its power from the battery directly and uses relays activated by the vehicles lights to power the trailer lights preventing damage to the vehicles system. I have a 1994 Stealth RT without the turbocharged engine. I have gone through 2 new batteries in a short period of time. Is it possible that a failing alternator can ruin a battery? If so I would like to know if there is a way to check if the alternator has actually failed. Are there specific testing methods that can be used to narrow the cause down? If it s overcharging or is draining current when off it will discharge the battery after it sits for extended periods. Even if it does not sit long enough to run completely down it can cause the battery to fail due to its heavy discharge/charge cycles. To check the alternator you need to have a charging system analysis done with a charging system tester. This will show the internal operation of the alternator, diodes, field, and ability to charge at idle and at higher rpm but will not show a drain. To find a drain they will need to perform is a current drain test. Most shops with this type of tool will also have an electronic battery testing tool. It is possible that you have had a run of bad luck with two bad batteries. It has happened to us in our shop before.
