5 A S K T H E MOTOR MEDICS Automotive Advice from the Under The Hood Show I have a 2005 Ford truck that I use to pull my fifth wheel camper 20,000 miles or more per year. We are retired and tour the country. We have been listening to your Under The Hood radio show for several years and as we travel we check the website for stations to listen on and so far have heard you on the air in 15 different states. We are true Hoodies. We heard you talking about tire pressure monitors recently and how all cars are coming out with them but our truck is not equipped and wondered if we could install them as an accessory? We have had several close calls due to low tires on both the truck and the camper and wonder if they can be installed on both of them? Steve and Jennifer, listening this week to KMAS from the KOA outside Seattle Washington Dear Steve and Jennifer, Thank you for being such die-hard Hoodies. There are aftermarket kits out there to do just what you want. These kits have many features like individual tire pressure, low or high-pressure alerts and more. The features depend on the price you pay for the unit. Many people monitor every wheel on the vehicle and trailer. The units can be very easy to install yourself and can be found at many truck stops, camping centers, and parts stores. Knowing your pressures is a great way to increase your safety. I have heard you talk about cabin air filters many times over the years so you would think that I would take the time to see If my car was equipped with one. My vents started to blow much weaker over the past few months and I just kept turning up the dial until I could not get the car to cool off. I was not able to get in right away to have it checked and I started hearing a rattle noise under my hood when I had the defroster or air conditioning on. Once I had time to get it to the shop they told me my air conditioning compressor had failed and it would cost to repair it in addition to the cabin air filter which they will install for free with the repair. Why would a dirty air filter cause a bad compressor? Some cars don t even have a filter. Myron in Valentine Nebraska Dear Myron, The filter needs to be changed regularly or it will restrict airflow. When it gets severely restricted the evaporator core for the air conditioning may get so cold that oil in the system will not flow well and it is possible that in some cases it could damage the system. Usually the pressure switch in the system would shut it down but we don t know all of your details. If you have a cabin air filter check its condition regularly. Over the past year I have replaced both rear window regulators. This is the second time for the passenger side rear which was replaced 4 years ago. My front passenger side window has now stopped moving and I m sure it is also the regulator. I m at my wits end here! What might cause this problem and can I prevent it? Terry in Muncie, Indiana Dear Terry, This is common with many cars using cable regulators with plastic parts. The regulator breaks at the weakest point and will stop moving. Some older vehicles had a clutch in the motor that would break to stop travel of the window. Both the clutch and the plastic regulator are meant to protect persons from injury if they become trapped in the window as it goes up. We find that windows become broken most often in the following situations. 1. When the vehicle is operated in freezing climates where glass becomes stuck and attempted operation damages the regulator. 2. When children in the vehicle operate the windows and hold the button in the up or down position too long or hang on the glass when it is part of the way down. The best way to prevent a broken regulator is to make sure they never become obstructed or forced in any way and use factory quality replacement parts. I drive a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado truck with a V8 engine and 4 wheel drive. I think the fuel mileage is much less than it should be getting. At this time my combined city/highway driving is only about 14 mpg. Recently I was listening to your radio show and you mentioned a fuel system cleaner that will help with fuel mileage. Is it something I can just pour in the tank and fix my problem or something more involved? Duane in Youngstown, Ohio Dear Duane, What we often recommend on-air is a professional fuel system or induction system cleaning. A shop that specializes in the system service will connect a machine to the engine fuel rail and use a chemical to clean the injection and the combustion chambers and the intake which in turn brings back lost engine efficiency that has been lost to carbon build-up. The pour-in tank products are great for maintaining the engine between cleanings but will not clean like the professional system. Think of it like a teeth cleaning, brushing alone won t get the job done. The cleaning will only help mileage if it has been reduced due to a build-up in the engine. Your mileage compares to other well running trucks so at this time you may not be helped by a cleaning. Remember to check things like your air filter and tire pressures as well and avoid jack rabbit starts to increase your mileage. I have a 2004 Chrysler 300M with the original battery. Do you recommend replacing vehicle batteries as part of a regular maintenance plan? What about the sensors? Should any of them be replaced on a regular basis as well? The car is in great shape and has been very reliable and I want to keep it that way. I just passed 100,000 miles. Dan in Fairview, Minnesota. Dear Dan, Most all car batteries will have a label on them giving an estimated service life range in months the battery will last. Your original battery is now 8 years old and may be ready to fail at any moment or may still have some life in it yet. How can you tell what the condition of the battery is? You can have a battery capacitance test done using an electronic battery condition tester which will look into the battery electronically and tell you things like cell condition, cold cranking amps available, impedance, etc. These things will let you know if there is battery life left. Once the battery has reached its life expectancy and looks weak on a test replace it or it will fail you unexpectedly. It is important to test your battery once a year because they can fail much earlier than what is printed on the battery. As for sensors, there are some such as oxygen sensors that have a service date but most are serviced only when they fail.
