UIT DIE BESTUURSSITPLEK.FROM THE DRIVER S SEAT Die jaar spoed vinnig ten einde en so ook die termyn van die huige POMK komitee. Die Algemene Jaarvergadering vind op 01 November plaas. Doen asb. spesiale moeite om dit by te woon en nomineer asb. lede vir die nuwe termyn om die belange van die POMK voort te dra. Die voorsitter se jaarverslag sal ook tydens die vergadering dien en daaruit sal julle agterkom hoeveel aktiwiteite daar die afgelope jaar was. Baie dankie vir elkeen se betrokkenheid en positiewe bydrae! The Financial Statements and budgets for the following year, (POMC and CITP) will also serve for approval. We are fortunately still in a surplus financial position, despite the economic recession. Please assist in growing our membership and public awareness to further this aim. We had the privilege during our last club meeting to listen to Adriaan Loedolf and feast our eyes on the immaculate VW Variant Automatic which is testimony to his perfectionism. The friends of Air Cooled Cars again made use of our facilities and experienced great support from both exibitors and the public as usual. Some of our members and their cars could also be seen unofficially during events at Melrose House and the Tshwane Municipal Office. Voorbereidings vir die jaareindfunksie op 18 November vorder fluks. SOUTH AFRICA TO COME ALIVE WITH THE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF 1930 s GRAND PRIX CARS In November 2018, South Africa will come alive to the sights and sounds of a grid full of 1930's Grand Prix cars for the first time in nearly 80 years. The occasion is the South African Historic Grand Prix Festival which is being organised as a celebration of the iconic racers that originally participated in the South African Grands Prix in the 1930s. In this era, the South African GP took place at the Prince George Race track in East London between 1934 and 1939. These races were supported by two further events, the Grosvenor GP in Cape Town and the Rand GP in Johannesburg, the trio of events creating a mini 'Winter Series' for European and British racing drivers of the day. The UK organiser of the event, Speedstream Events, has undertaken considerable research to identify and trace as many of the original cars that participated in the South African events during the 1930's. The response has been tremendously positive, with several thrilling cars already committed to participating, including the Maserati 8CM with which Whitney Straight won the inaugural 1934 Grand Prix, the ERA which won the 1937 Grand Prix and the Riley Ulster Imp which finished second in the same event. 1934 Maserati 8CM (Photo Dave Adams) 4

1934 ERA R4A (Photo: Alan Cox) 1934 Riley Ulster Imp (Photo: Peter McFadyen) Other cars the organisers expect entries from include Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Talbot, Frazer Nash, Aston Martin, MG, Railton, Plymouth as well further ERAs, Maserati and Rileys. Billed as a once in a lifetime experience for the owners, the South African Historic Grand Prix Festival will comprise of three elements taking place between the 25th November and the 2nd December 2018. The first leg, on the 25th November, is a commemorative race at the East London Grand Prix Circuit combined with a parade around the original 11-mile long Prince George race circuit. This will present a fantastic opportunity for vintage car and Grand Prix enthusiasts to see these cars being driven in anger in the country for the first time in 80 years. The Festival then moves on to a private tour (from 26-30 November) for the road going Grand Prix cars, where they will drive some of South Africa s most scenic and exhilarating roads between East London and the Western Cape. The event will culminate in a two-day Grand Prix Garden Party close to Cape Town. This element will see the Grand Prix cars on display as well as being demonstrated, providing a further opportunity for the public to interact with the cars and owners in celebration of South Africa's proud history of hosting Grand Prix racing. The venue for this element will be confirmed in due course. 5

The Grand Prix Garden Party will be set in a high-end venue and offer ticket holders the opportunity to get up close to the cars in a relaxed environment. There will also be a limited number of VIP hospitality tickets available in the Drivers Club hospitality at both the East London race event and the Cape Garden Party which will provide a unique opportunity to mingle with the owners of the GP cars, as well as network with celebrities, motorsport heroes and like-minded enthusiasts. While preference will be given to entries where cars have authentic South African Grand Prix history, the By Invitation Only event is also open to owners of age related Grand Prix cars who may wish to participate in this once-off experience. HENRY FORD said: "Improvements have been coming so quickly that the past is being lost to the rising generation, and it can be preserved only by putting it in a form where it may be seen and felt. That is the reason behind this collection." 6

CULLINAN OF NIKS Die POMK Cullinan gebeurtenis van 23 September 2017 kan netsowel aangehaal word volgens die bekende uitdrukking van wereldreisigers wat Hollywood in die VSA op hulle reisprogram aandui as HOLLYWOOD OR BUST of in eenvoudige Afrikaans DIT MIS EK VIR NIKS!! Vanjaar se Cullinan uitstappie kan kwalik as n run, rit, of rally beskryf word aangesien dit in der waarheid nie by een van bogenoemde tuishoort nie. Die hele bedoeling en aard van die besoek aan Cullinan elke jaar is n' aangename, gesellige en ontspanne uitstappie vir die hele gesin. Vanjaar was die derde jaar wat die uitstappie aangebied is. Die Saterdag-oggend van 23 September was sonnig en kalm, die weer was perfek. Reeds van vroeg oggend af was Willie en Adri wat die roete beplan en saamgestel het op hulle pos by die Klubhuis om n vraelys uit te deel en vrae te beantwoord. Die lys het ongeveer 30 leidrade bevat wat deelnemers moes gebruik om vrae te beantwoord en te verseker dat hulle op die korrekte roete bly. Die enigste kundigheid wat deelnemers met hulle navigators nodig gehad het was om te kan lees en skryf! Ook getrou op hulle pos by die Klubhuis was Frik Kraamwinkel met sy kamera om fotos te neem en Leonie wat almal teenwoordig met koffie en haar heerlike tuisgemaakte beskuit trakteer het. 23 ou motors het om 9 uur Saterdag-oggend deur die hekke van die Klubhuis vertrek om aan die rit van nagenoeg 100km deel te neem. Die roete wat Willie en sy span gekies het was deur die mooiste natuurskoon van die omgewing. Ons gasheer en gasvrou op Cullinan was Gordon en Ursula Webb van die juwelierswinkel THE ART OF SILVER langs die hoofstraat geleë is. Gordon het met die plaaslike sakekamer gereël dat die valhek op die hoofstraat vir n' uur en n' half vir gewone besoekers gesluit sal word om die deelnemers n' geleëntheid te gee om almal saam in een area te parkeer. Vanaf 10:30 tot ongeveer 12 uur het al die deelnemers na n' voorspoedige reis in Cullinan arriveer Nadat die talle winkeltjies en uitstallings besigtig is het almal in die agterplaas van THE ART OF SILVER vergader waar Gordon en sy span ses gazebo s met gedekte tafels vooraf opgeslaan het. Deelnemers moes hulle eie stoele en eetgerei saambring terwyl Die POMK vleispakkies te koop aangebied het en die nodige bykosse pap, sous en n heerlike slaai voorsien het. Na n' gesellige braai, kuier en skerts was Willie gereed met die uitslae om die wenners om 2 uur aan te kondig. Die wenners was GIDEON SCHEEPERS as bestuurder, met sy navigator TERMA KUSSMAN aan wie die wisseltrofee deur Willie oorhandig is. Die dag is afgesluit met die gebruiklike uitnodiging deur Alta en Stefan Stander na hulle kleinhoewe net buite Cullinan om heerlike boorgatwater, koffie en tert saam met hulle te kom geniet. Baie 7

BONNETS-UP EN CARS IN THE PARK BRAAI Die afgelope Second Sunday byeenkoms van die Klub op 8 Oktober, is voorafgegaan deur ʼn baie suksesvolle en volhuis Aircooled Day die vorige Sondag. Gevolglik was die organiseerders voorberei vir ʼn ietwat laer profiel bonnets-up byeenkoms. Frik Kraamwinkel en die Klub het die geleentheid benut om ʼn roerbraai aan te bied as dankiesê vir al die klublede, helpers en hulle gesinne wat deur hulle harde werk gehelp het dat die jaar se Cars in the Park weereens ʼn groot sukses was. Daar was ʼn stuk of sestig mense teenwoordig. Die braai was uiteraard ʼn meer intiemer byeenkoms en al die aanwesiges was meestal ou vriende wat gereeld saamwerk by die CiP. Dus het hulle hartlik saam gekuier en gebraai. Die feit dat almal in die saal byeen was en daar saam geëet het, het n baie gemoedelike byeenkoms verseker. Die roerbraai was baie lekker en Leonie se heerlike nagereg het dit uitstekend afgerond. Ons is verheug om te sien dat Leonie so goed herstel het na haar onlangse terugslag en dit is lekker om haar weer terug te hê in ons midde. Jan Nel en sy musiekfabriek het net die regte agtergrondmusiek gespeel vir die geleentheid en dit lyk of die nuwe verbeterde luidsprekerstelsel goed werk. Die feit dat die Kroeg weer in produksie is, het ook natuurlik ook gehelp om ʼn gemoedelike atmosfeer te skep. Baie dankie Frik vir jou reëling en aanbieding van ʼn baie lekker geleentheid tesame met jou gesin. Daar is beslis ruimte vir meer van hierdie soort klubbyeenkomste wat die samehorigheid en onderlinge gees van die klublede beslis bevorder. Die volgende hiervan is die Klub se einde van die jaar funksie op 18 November en lede word versoek om nou al hulle besprekings hiervoor by Frik te doen. Daar was ʼn hele paar baie interessante motors wat uitgestal is, waaronder Ben Minnaar se pragtige Messerschmitt, Alex Duffey se MGA (eintlik is dit Heleen sʼn), Jan Nel se Toyota MR2, Bill se Triumph, Christo Ferreira se Rolls Royce, Taco Kamstra se Corvette, Willie en Adri van Niekerk se Triumph Spitfire, Emil en Hannetjie Kuschke se Mercedes 220S, Bill Flynn met sy Triumph Chicane, Willie Oosthuizen met 57 Chevrolet, Neil Stander se Cobra en Ken en Hettie Smith met hulle Mercedes. Sommige van die motors se foto s verskyn hier neffens. Tydens die geleentheid het Lou Bornman die wisseltrofee amptelik aan die wenners van die onlangse Derde Diamond Run na Cullinan, Deon Scheepers en Terma Kussman oorhandig. Ons wens hulle baie geluk. Foto s van die geleentheid verskyn elders in hierdie uitgawe. Alle klublede en hulle gesinne word nou reeds uitgenooi om deel te neem aan volgende jaar se Diamond Run na Cullinan wat nou al een van die items op ons jaarprogram geword het. Dit was nou ʼn lekker kuier en eet partytjie! Berto Lombard 11

Skou van Lugverkoelde Motors: 01 Oktober 2017 te Pretoria Oumotorklub Die twaalfde jaarlikse Skou van Lugverkoelde Motors het op 1 Oktober by die Pretoria Oumotorklub ([POMK) plaasgevind en was weereens n groot sukses. Die skou maak voorsiening vir alle klassieke lugverkoelde fabrikate waarvan n verskeidenheid dan ook te sien was. Ongeveer 160 lugverkoelde motors is uitgestal tesame met onderdele, motormemorabilia en allerlei interessanthede soos n keweronderstel kompleet met enjin. Die skou is gemik op individuele motoreienaars maar klubs soos die Jacaranda Beetle Club, Mikromotorklub van SA, Aircooled Hooligans en die 356 Klub was verteenwoordig. Die tema vanjaar was dubbelruit Volkswagens en verskeie Kewers met gesplete agterruit asook Kombis met gesplete voorruit was te sien. Rare 356 en 911/912 Porsches, n afslaankap Kewer asook BMW Izettas en ander mikromotors het die perseel volgestaan en baie bewondering uitgelok. Daar was ook hier en daar n nie-lugverkoelde klassieke motor wat gesorg het vir afwisseling. n Prystrekking met pryse soos dienste vir lugverkoelde VW asook gereedskap en koelsakke het ook plaasgevind. Die skou organiseerders streef daarna om n ontspanne en gesinsvriendelike atmosfeer te skep. In die verband is uitstallers aangemoedig om self n lekker parkeerplek uit te soek op die gras en boomryke POMK terrein, terwyl kinders op gratis roomys getrakteer is. Dis n aangename skou om by te woon en die wins word aan liefdadigheidsorganisasies geskenk. Groot dank aan Frik Kraamwinkel en die POMK vir die gebruik van die terrein wat weereens n lushof was vir die oog. AIR-COOLED motor show 2017 One of the most popular events held at Pretoria Old Motor Club s every year is the get-together of cars with air-cooled engines. This year s event took place on Sunday the 1 st of October, and although products of two major German manufacturers dominated, there were also a few other cars on display. However, even these cars were of German origin. One of the most popular micro cars of the 1950 s and 1960 s was the Goggomobil, which was manufactured by the German company Glas. Pedro Diederichs has owned his Limousine 400 since 1965, and it has served as a student car, and even as a wedding car. Pedro, who is an active member of the Micro Car Club, considers this car to be his favourite. The longest journey it has undertaken, took place in 1998, it was between Pretoria and Cape Town. 1958 Goggomobil Another German manufacturer which is no longer around is NSU. This was one of only a handful of companies who actively marketed cars with rotary engines, but the model that was on display, was a 1959 Prinz, owned by Wulf Krahmann. He owns two of them, and he has had the model on display for eight years. This car has been restored to its original specifications and is in regular use. The engine delivers 30 horse power, hence the Prinz 30 name. NSU Prinz 19

The Volkswagen Beetle is the most successful car in the history of the international motor industry, and over 22 million were sold in its lifetime. Therefore, several were on display, but a few of them really stood out. The one car that attracted a lot of attention was a stunning 1969 convertible that was built by Karmann in Germany and was imported to South Africa in 1971. This car was restored to its original condition and the whole project lasted two years. Peet Wessels made one important mechanical change; the original 1500 cc engine was replaced by the 1600 cc twin-port engine that was fitted to the South African models from 1971 onwards. VW Cabriolet During the Beetle s South African production life, which ran from 1951 to 1978, just about all models were fitted with drum brakes all round. However, one year was the exception. In 1967, the 1500 was introduced for the first time and it was the one and only model to be fitted with disc brakes. Initially, twelve cars were imported for the press launch, and one of the journalists who tested them, bought one of these cars. To date, this particular car, which is owned by Evert Wielsma, has only done just over 52 000 miles and it is still in an immaculately original condition. 1967 VW Beetle 1500 20

1964 Volkswagen Beetle 1200 fitted with Empi Rostyle rims The Jacaranda Beetle Club celebrated its 30 th anniversary and two cars that took part in the anniversary run that was held last year, were on display. One of them was a model that was introduced as the top model in the Beetle range in 1975. The 1600 S, also known as the Super Bug, was the only model in the South African range that has the curved windscreen and the more modern dashboard that were standard features on all contemporary overseas models. Jan Nel owns two of them, and his orange car was the one that took part in the run. This was one of a few 1600 S models that were on display; among the models that were manufactured in South Africa, this is one of those that can be considered a collector s item. 1975 VW beetle 1600 A few more common Beetles also attracted some attention. Koos Jonck has owned his 1975 model 1600 for two years; it has been restored, and it was given new paintwork and upholstery by Leon Ferreira, the previous owner. Leo Middelberg has owned his 1974 model 1600 L for two years as well; 1974 was the only model year in which the Beetle had the fender-mounted indicators and the large tail lamps. Leo s car has been restored to its original condition. Needless to say, the Beetle was not the only air-cooled model that Volkswagen manufactured, and another long-standing air-cooled model was the Transporter/Kombi/Microbus range. The original splitwindow models are not as rare as one might think, and Centurion Classic Cars displayed an 21

immaculate 1965 model. Although the Kombi and Microbus models are the most fondly remembered models, a few second-generation single cab pick-ups were on display. One of them was a 1971 model; it was originally fitted with a 1600cc engine, but Wynand Strydom bored it out to 1835cc. Another pick-up on display was a 1975 model 1600 owned by Juwhan van Deventer. The previous year, Volkswagen re-introduced the original split-window range to South Africa; it had the 1600cc engine and was called the Fleetline. However, the Transporter range, based on the then-new models, remained in production. Juwhan s pick-up is one of the latter models and is still completely original. 1975 VW Pick-up In 1961, Volkswagen introduced a larger model, known as the Type 3, which was available as a two-door sedan, a two-door fastback, known as the 1600 TL, a station wagon, known as the Variant. Although these models are getting rare, a few of them, all of which have already been featured, were on display. Nardus Tredoux s 1967 sedan was subjected to a bolt and nut restoration, and is in an immaculately original condition. Adriaan Loedolff owns two of them; a 1600 sedan and a Variant, both of which were manufactured in 1969. The Variant is an actually something very special, because it is fitted with an automatic transmission. Less than a year after this option was introduced, the Type 3 was discontinued in South Africa and replaced by the 411. Neither this model nor the 412, which replaced in 1973, was represented. 22

Another manufacturer that became famous for air-cooled cars was Porsche, and the 911 was still fitted with this type of engine until very recently. However, the first Porsche that achieved legendary status, even if it was for the wrong reason, was the 356 Speedster. This will forever be remembered as the car in which James Dean was fatally injured in 1955. Finding an original Speedster in South Africa is just about impossible, but Riaan van der Westhuizen owns a replica. This car looks just about identical to the original Speedster, but Riaan, who has owned his car for two years, has fitted a 1600 twin port engine with down-draught carburettors. The final event on the Pretoria Old Motor Club calendar is the display of Japanese cars on the 12 th of November. 23

MELROSEHUIS FUNKSIE In September het Melissa Lindeque van Melrosehuis vir Alex Duffey gekontak en vertel dat hulle n uitstalling in die huis gaan opsit oor ou motors in Suid-Afrika. Sy het gevra of die POMK nie moontlik genader kan word om n paar baie ou motors om die huis te kan kom uitstal nie. Alex het vir Taco Kamstra en Emil Kuschke genader om die funksie met Melissa by Melrosehuis te gaan bespreek. Ons is eers op n toer deur die huis geneem en die motor memorabilia-uitstalling daar gewys. Almal was oortuig dat ons haar met baie beter prente, boeke en voorwerpe kon help om die uitstalling te verbeter en daar is toe besluit dat daar n uitstalling van loslig-motors op Sondag 15 Oktober by die huis sal plaasvind. Die idee was dat dit die vorm van n piekniek sal neem en dat die openbare publiek deur die museum in die pers genooi sal word. Alex het Melissa gehelp met n aantal mooi oumotorboeke, antieke gereedskap, vonkproppe, wieldoppe en ander voorwerpe om die uitstalling aan te vul en vroeg op Sondag 15 Oktober het n hele klomp POMK manne hul motors voor die aanskoulike ou herehuis gaan uitstal. Frik en Leonie Kraamwinkel was daar met n 1932 Baby Ford, Emil en Hannie Kuschke met hulle 1914 Ford Model T, Roelf van der Merwe met sy 1927 Ford Model T, Alex en Heleen Duffey met hul 1908 Buick Model 10 (foto onder regs), Taco Kamstra met n pluiskuil het sy perdekoets (foto onder links) voor die huis parkeer en Jurjen Kamstra het sy rooi-wiel Holsman High-Wheeler(foto onder) daarnaas laat staan. Klein Sakkie van der Wat het ons almal kom verras met sy pragtige nuwe 1937 Coffin-Nose Cord en Danie en Natie du Plessis was daar met hul 1928 Ford Model A Bakkie. Almal het deur die huis gestap en die pragtige oudhede bewonder en ons is almal in die lesingsaal trakteer op koffie, tee en lekker eetgoed. So teen 11:00 het n aantal toeskouers opgedaag en die motors bewonder en gefotografeer. Teen 12:00 het ons n heerlike piekniek met baie lekker kos voor die ou huis geniet en alles was baie gesellig. Lesings deur Alex Duffey en Taco Kamstra het ongelukkig nie plaasgevind nie as gevolg van n tekort aan belangstellendes. Aan die einde van die funksie het almal ingestem dat die klub dit n jaarlikse instelling moet maak en dat ons eienaars van ouer los-lig motors en selfs voor-oorlogse motorfietse en perdekarre moet nooi om hulle skatte daar vir die publiek te kom ten toonstel. Melissa Lindeque is ook baie gretig dat dit sal gebeur en het belowe dat die museum dit baie aangenaam vir die uitstallers sal maak. Alex Duffey 24

SAVVA Technical Tip 125 Safety fuel pump cut-offs We received this excellent advice about fuel cut-offs from Ferrari owner Robert van Zyl and regretfully I have been remiss in not publishing it earlier apologies Rob. The warning is that if you use or convert to using an electric fuel pump a cut out should be installed to disconnect the electric pump should the vehicle be involved in an accident. If the engine is not running for whatever reason the pump should stop pumping. To Quote Rob: I agree that the fitting of electric fuel pumps is a practical solution to the problem of cars that are not in use on a daily basis. I have also fitted electric pumps to some of my cars. During the carb era Ferrari also fitted an electric pump to his cars in addition to a mechanical pump. In some instances he fitted an electric pump and two mechanical pumps. There is a problem with fitting an electric pump without some cut-out device in the electric circuit. Early fuel injected cars had an inertial cut-out switch which stopped the fuel from pumping when the car was subjected to an impact. This could also be a problem when driving on some of our bumpy roads. There are two solutions: Fit an inertial cut- out switch. Fit a pressure sensing switch to the oil supply which would cut off the electricity to the pump if the engine is not running. It might be possible to use the oil pressure warning light switch but I have not tried this. You will have to fit a press- button over riding switch to get the car started before the oil pressure has had time to build up. Good Luck p.s. Ideally the electric pump should be used for priming the carb and then switched off and the mechanical one then taking over. 27
