TELEPHONE TECHNICAL SERVICES DS5 USER GUIDE Manufactured in Australia for Telephone Technical Services PO BOX 675 SPRINGWOOD QLD 4127

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION This User Guide describes the installation and operating instructions of our DS5 model DOOR STATION Controller. It is designed to connect to a SPECIALLY DESIGNED Surface Mount or Flush Mount DOOR PHONE, as described on page 3. It is designed to connect to an ANALOGUE EXTENSION of any PABX or other Multi-Line telephone system. To use DS5, it is necessary that the Telephone System can be programmed to HOT DIAL when the analogue telephone extension that it is connected to goes Off Hook. DS5 produces an Off Hook condition when triggered by the attached Door Phone. It will then remain Off Hook until it detects standard Australian Hang Up tones from your telephone system. If your Telephone System CANNOT be programmed to HOT DIAL, then you will need to use our Model DS6 device, as it can be programmed to DIAL an internal telephone extension or external telephone number. ONE or TWO Door Phones can be connected to the DS5 unit (they must be connected in parallel with each other). If you use TWO Door Phones connected in parallel, either Door Phone can trigger the Door Phone call and Audio will be present at both Door Phones at the same time. If you wish to operate 2 completely separate Door Phone zones, when using 2 Door Phones, you should use an additional DS5 connected to an additional analogue telephone extension. Each Door Phone will then have separate audio communication. Model DS5 Has a Single Lock Control facility. It is designed to allow you to unlock your gate or door from the answering telephone. The DS5 Relay is a Dry Contact Relay, rated at 12V/1A. Page 2 Telephone Technical Service

OPERATION When a visitor at your door or gate presses the call button on the SUPPLIED DOOR PHONE, DS5 will produce an OFF HOOK condition to the PABX. The PABX system should be programmed to HOT DIAL this connection to one or more internal extensions or out to an external telephone number (which can include a mobile cell phone). Upon detection of the DS5 OFF HOOK, your PABX will AUTOMATICALLY connect the visitor at the DOOR PHONE direct to one or more preprogrammed PABX extension(s). Alternatively, the PABX may initiate an OUTGOING CALL so that the visitor at the DOOR PHONE may be connected to an EXTERNAL SITE, or even a CELLULAR PHONE. Once the INTERNAL or EXTERNAL party answers their telephone, they will be connected direct to the DOOR PHONE so that they may communicate with the visitor. If you are using the LOCK CONTROL OPTION, you can also open a gate or door lock during this call (by pressing **) to allow your visitor to enter. Press ** to unlock your gate or door during a Door Phone call Once the CALLED PARTY has hung up, DS5 will detect the hang up tone and then terminate connection to the Door Phone. Note - Due to the possibility that your PABX system may not output hang up tones, or Australian Cadence hang up tones, a MAXIMUM CALL TIME has been set at 99 seconds. This time can be changed to any value between 15 to 99 seconds. For further detail, refer to the section - Programming Options on page 14. Telephone Technical Service Page 5

LOCK CONTROL Your DS5 is provided with an internal relay which can be used to control a GATE LOCK or STRIKE. Relay Specification - Dry Relay Contacts rated at 12V/1Amp. IMPORTANT NOTE - Do not use the 12V plug pack which is provided to power DS5 to also provide 12V power for the lock, as this may cause damage to the DS5 controller. You must use a separate 12V source, with a maximum rating of 12V/1A. LOCK FACILITY To OPEN the Door/Gate Lock after answering a call from your DOOR PHONE you need to press ** on your telephone. The lock will remain open for a user programmable period of time. See page 14 for further details. The Default Lock Release time is 15 seconds. DOOR RELEASE MECHANISM A Door Release Mechanism is not supplied with DS5, due to the large variation of lock, door and gate types that can be used. Your installation technician will arrange the supply of a suitable Door Release Mechanism if required. Page 6 Telephone Technical Service

LOCK INSTALLATION Lock Control Connection The contacts of the Internal relay of DS5 are accessed by the supplied connection box. The DS5 Relay is a Dry Contact Relay, rated at 12V/ 1A. The polarity of the Relay connection wires is not important. The 12V power supply for the Electric Lock should connect to the Brown and Orange terminals. Black Red Green Yellow Brown 12 Volt Out Orange 12 Volt In LOCK CONTROL CONTACTS Brown and Orange NOTE - Do not use the supplied DS5 Controller 12V plug pack to also provide 12V power for the lock, as this may cause damage to the DS5 Controller. You must use a separate 12V source, with a maximum rating of 12V/1A. If problems are experienced, please refer to page 18 for troubleshooting tips. Telephone Technical Service Page 7

INSTALLATION Our DS5 Model Controller is designed to operate with a specially designed DOOR PHONE (see page 3). An ACMA approved installation technician will fit your DS5 Controller direct onto an ANALOGUE extension of a PABX or other Multi-Line telephone system. The contact details of suitable installation technicians in your area are available by calling Telephone Technical Service. INSTALLATION DETAILS PABX Analogue Extension 1) Connect the PABX EXTENSION port of your DS5 direct to an ANALOGUE TELEPHONE EXTENSION socket, using the supplied telephone cable fitted with a male plug. 2) Connect the supplied 12V power supply to your DS5, and switch the POWER ON. Ensure that the green LED on your DS5 is illuminated. 3) Connect the SUPPLIED DOOR PHONE to the DOOR PHONE port of your DS5. Run a solid core telephone cable (preferably CAT5) between the DS5 and the Door Phone. Maximum working distance is 300 meters. Our DP1 Door Phone requires only 2 wires of the CAT5 cable. Our DP2-DP5 Door Phones require 4 wires of the CAT5 cable. Your LOCK (if used) will require 2 of these wires. For your convenience, an interface unit with screw terminals is supplied and should be connected to the DS5 unit using the short RJ to RJ cable that is provided with it. Use of the interface unit is not required unless you plan to use the internal relay for Lock Control. If you are not using Lock Control, then you may prefer to connect the CAT5 cable direct to the 8 pin RJ45 port of DS5. Pin connections are described on page 11. Telephone Technical Service Page 9

INSTALLATION Cont. 4) The PABX or other Multi-Line telephone system should now be programmed to TRANSFER the DOOR PHONE call to the desired destination ( HOT DIAL ) once an OFF HOOK condition is detected on the extension to which the DS5 Controller is connected. This must be done by a suitably qualified telephone technician, that is familiar with programming your system to HOT DIAL. The DS5 Controller will automatically terminate the connection at the end of the call. See page 17 for further detail. Please refer to the separate User Guide supplied with your Door Phone, to obtain important information. Page 10 Telephone Technical Service

CONNECTING THE DOOR PHONE DP1 DOOR PHONE Connect the same two wires that are connected to the CENTRE 2 PINS of the 8 pin RJ45 socket of DS5, to the screw terminals located on the back of the DOOR PHONE. Polarity is not important. If you plan to use the interface unit, then the terminals for the GREEN and RED wires should be connected to the screw terminals located on the back of the DOOR PHONE. Polarity is not important. The LED on the DOOR PHONE should turn ON (DS5 must be ON). The DOOR PHONE should now be mounted onto your wall surface. With DP1 this is done by separating the Door Phone unit from the integral backing plate, secured by a screw underneath the grey plastic label, above the speaker. The backing plate should then be screwed to the wall surface, before re-attaching the Door Phone with the securing screw. DP2-DP5 DOOR PHONES Audio Connection - Connect Pins 4 & 5 (the centre 2 pins) of the 8 pin RJ45 socket of DS5 to the centre 2 inputs of the supplied 4 position Phoenix Plug. Polarity is not important. If you plan to use the interface unit, then the terminals for the GREEN and RED wires should be connected to the centre 2 positions of the 4 position Phoenix Plug. Polarity is not important. Power Connection - Connect Pins 3 & 6 (the 2 pins either side of the centre 2 pins) of the 8 pin RJ45 socket of DS5, to the outside positions of the 4 position Phoenix Plug. Polarity is not important. If you plan to use the interface unit, then the terminals for the YELLOW and BLACK wires should be connected to the outside positions of the 4 position Phoenix Plug. Polarity is not important. The LED on the DOOR PHONE should turn ON (DS5 must be ON). Your DP2-DP5 unit should be screwed direct to the wall with the 2 supplied mounting screws, or to the optional Surface Mounting Kit. Telephone Technical Service Page 11

TESTING THE DOOR PHONE You are now ready to test the DOOR PHONE connection by pressing the Call Button on the Door Phone. Your PABX or other Multi-Line telephone system should now connect the DOOR PHONE call to the correct destination. Have someone answer the call to communicate. Note - The Destination telephone must be located at least 3 m from the Door Phone, or you may only have communication in 1 direction. If you are using a Cordless Phone or Cell Phone, you may need to walk away until communication in both directions is achieved. Once you hang up, DS5 should disconnect the call after detection of 3 Hang Up tones. If the AUDIO Connection is not clear in both directions, you will need to adjust the Balance Pot, as described on page 13. TROUBLE SHOOTING If your Phone System does not respond when you have pressed the Call Button on the Door Phone, then you should : Open the supplied Interface Unit and temporarily short across the internal screw terminals connected to the RED and GREEN wires. If the Phone System does not respond, it may not be programmed correctly. You should remove DS5 from the analogue extension and connect an analogue telephone or buttinski test phone in its place. You should only fit DS5 to the analogue extension once an off hook by your analogue telephone or buttinski causes your telephone system to respond correctly. If the Phone System responds correctly, then there may be a problem with the cabling from the Door Phone to the interface unit. You should temporarily short across the centre 2 positions of the 4 position Phoenix plug which connects to the Door Phone (or the 2 screw terminals if you are using a DP1). If the Phone system does not respond, then you have a problem with the cabling back to the DS5 that must be repaired or replaced. If the Phone system does respond, then you may have a problem with the Door Phone. Call Telephone Technical Service for assistance. Page 12 Telephone Technical Service

BALANCE POT ADJUSTMENT Your DOOR PHONE is preset at the factory for maximum performance. Our sophisticated circuitry is designed to measure the background noise present at your site and then apply maximum gain. In most cases you SHOULD NOT NEED TO MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENTS. If you are using Two Door Phones connected in parallel, or there is some ambient background noise, you may need to adjust the POT of one or both Door Phones to suit your specific site conditions. The balance POT is provided in case you experience one of the following Audio is distorted. Audio (speech) can only be heard in 1 direction. Should you encounter one of these problems, you will need to make slow careful adjustments in one direction or the other until speech can be heard in both directions and without distortion. The balance POT is accessed via a small hole on the back of the DOOR PHONE. You will need to use a small flat blade screwdriver to adjust it. On Models DP 2-5, the balance POT is located under a small plastic sealing plug, which will need to be temporarily removed. IMPORTANT NOTES : 1) You will require TWO PEOPLE to adjust your Door Phone. 2) Wait for 10 seconds after answering before adjusting POT. 3) Do not use a telephone IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE DOOR PHONE, as feedback interference will affect the Balance Pot settings. Move at least 3m from Door Phone. 4) The Balance POT does not increase volume. Moving it when unnecessary may cause a deterioration in audio quality or a loss of audio in 1 direction. 13 Telephone Technical Service Page

UNIT PROGRAMMING There are THREE user programmable functions as follows : DOOR PHONE CALL ADVICE TONES 5 shorts beeps can be injected into the Door Phone call, immediately after answer, to advise you that the incoming call has originated from your Door Phone. This facility is very useful for those users who have no other indication that the incoming call is from the Door Phone. Allowable Range : ON or OFF Default Setting is : OFF MAXIMUM DOOR PHONE CALL TIME Your DS5 unit has been pre-programmed to detect Australian Hang Up tones to determine when the call is complete and to terminate the call connection. Due to the possibility that your equipment may not generate Hang Up tones or suitable tones, a maximum allowable time limit is set for a Door Phone call. If your DS5 does not automatically terminate on hang up tone detection, you should set a lower time setting, which is still long enough to communicate with your visitors. DS5 will terminate all Door Phone calls at this time setting. Allowable Range : 15 99 seconds Default Setting is : 99 seconds Note : if needed you can increase the max call time by a factor of 10 times. See page 15 for further detail. LOCK ACTIVATE TIME DS5 has a SINGLE LOCK facility fitted as standard. When ** is pressed, the LOCK will remain OPEN for a set period of time (default is 15 seconds). This time can be changed from 01-99 seconds. Allowable Range : 1 to 99 seconds Default Setting is : 15 seconds Page 14 Telephone Technical Service

PROGRAMMING NOTES 1) To program your unit, you need to temporarily connect a standard ANALOGUE TELEPHONE (or a BUTINSKI) to the PROGRAM PORT of your DS5 unit. All entries must be made using this telephone. 2) The PABX EXTENSION port of your DS5 unit MUST be connected to a telephone extension (or you can alternatively use a normal PSTN line). This is so a telephone line battery feed can be connected to the Programming Telephone, which will allow it to generate touch tones. 3) To enter PROGRAMMING MODE you must turn OFF POWER to your unit and then switch POWER ON AGAIN. 4) You must PRESS # within 30 SECONDS of reconnecting power. You will hear 3 short beeps to confirm you are in programming mode. 5) Individual Parameter Programming Entries (A-C) are then carried out by pressing further keys on the attached telephone (see below). Note - Parameters can be changed in any order. Note - After each entry, DS5 should generate 1 short beep to confirm acceptance of command, or 1 long beep to advise of an entry error. If 1 long beep is detected, your command should be repeated. A. DOOR PHONE CALL ADVICE TONES To disable TONES press #40 To enable TONES press #41 B. HANG UP AFTER DIAL OUT DS5 incorporates a HANG UP TONE DETECTOR which is designed to detect Australian specification hang up tones, that will be present at the completion of a Door Phone call. This process is fully automatic. When installed on PABX systems, the Hang Up tone generated may be outside of the cadence and frequency normally used in Australia for Hang Up tones. In this situation, DS5 may not hang up until the Maximum Door Phone Call Time has elapsed. Our Hang Up detector, looks for : 1. A Tone Frequency between 200Hz and 600Hz. 2. A Tone Duration between 300mS and 600mS. 3. A 50% Duty Cycle +/- 20% (ie ON and OFF periods should be the same +/- 20%) You can adjust your PABX system to generate Hang Up tones as per the above specification, or to output normal Australian Hang Up tones. OR You can PRESS ANY TOUCH TONE NUMBER digit (0 to 9) on your telephone to cause an immediate disconnection of the call. AND/OR You can set the Maximum Door Phone Call Time to a time less than 99 seconds but which is still long enough to communicate with your visitors. DS5 will terminate all Door Phone calls at this time setting. ELECTRO MAGNETIC INTERFERENCE Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) from some Switch Mode Power Supplies and some low end UPS units (Uninterruptable Power Supplies) can prevent hang up tones being detected by DS5. Switch Mode Power Supplies are easily identified because they do not use a transformer and are very light. TURN OFF any SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLIES located near DS5 (and its power supply) and test if the problem is resolved. If the DS5 Power Supply is connected to an Uninterruptable Power Supply, remove it and test if the problem is resolved. IMPORTANT NOTE Immediate Hang Up can also be achieved by simply pressing ANY Touch Tone Number key (0 to 9) on your telephone at the end of a call. Note : # and * cannot be used for this function. Telephone Technical Service Page 17

TROUBLESHOOTING LOCK CONTROL The DS5 Relay is a Dry Contact Relay, rated at 12V/1A. If you are having trouble controlling the LOCK or GATE STRIKE, please trouble-shoot by using the following procedure : 1. Test that you receive the correct voltage across the BROWN and ORANGE terminals of the supplied connection box, as soon as ** is pressed on the attached telephone. 2. If the correct voltage is not present investigate all wiring to and from your lock and power source. 3. If the correct voltage is present, short across the two terminals and your electric lock should operate. If your lock still does not operate, there will be a problem with wiring between your power supply, electric lock and connection box. If your lock operates, then the problem is located in the wires of the connection box, the RJ to RJ lead connecting to the DS5 unit or the relay within the DS5 unit itself. If possible, please bypass the connection box and the RJ to RJ lead connecting to the DS5 unit by feeding the two power supply wires of the electric lock into an RJ45 plug in positions 3 & 6 (ie the pair either side of the centre audio pair). If the lock then works with **, then the problem is in the connection box or the RJ to RJ lead connecting to the DS5 unit. If the lock still does not work with **, then the problem would appear to be within the DS5 unit. 4. Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) caused by SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLIES and some low end UPS units (Uninterruptable Power Supplies) can prevent the ** touch tones from being detected by DS5. TURN OFF all SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLIES located near the DS5 controller to test for Interference and relocate any offending device. If the DS5 Power Supply is connected to an Uninterruptable Power Supply, remove it and test if the problem is resolved. IMPORTANT NOTE - You must not use the Power Adaptor supplied with DS5 to power your Door Lock or Strike. Please call Telephone Technical Service for additional assistance. Page 18 Telephone Technical Service

TROUBLESHOOTING AUDIO If you are having trouble with AUDIO COMMUNICATION between the DOOR PHONE and your PABX Telephones, please follow the procedure below. 1. Adjust the POT located on the back of the Door Phone as described on page 13. 2. If you are still having audio quality problems, they can be caused by EMI INTERFERENCE from Switch Mode Power Supplies or Low end UPS units (Uninterruptable Power Supplies). Switch Mode Power Supplies can be easily identified because they are very light, due to the fact that they do not use a transformer. Many brands of these power supplies are well known to generate high levels of EMI. Please TURN OFF any SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLIES located near the DS5 controller (and its power supply) and test if the problem is resolved. If the DS5 Power Supply is connected to an Uninterruptable Power Supply, remove it and test if the problem is resolved. 3. If you are still having audio quality problems, then you may be picking up interference (50hz power or other interference) via the cable travelling out to the Door Phone. To test for this, you need to temporarily isolate DS5 from the existing cable, using the following procedure : Disconnect the telephone cable from the DOOR PHONE port of your DS5 unit and then temporarily run NEW CAT5 cable from DS5 to your DOOR PHONE. Or alternatively, remove the Door Phone from its normal position and move it closer to the DS5 unit so that you can connect it using a temporary new CAT5 cable. Please ensure this temporary test cable is no less than 3 meters away from your DS5 unit in order to prevent it generating feedback. If satisfactory operation can be achieved, you should then fault find your problem in the wiring leading to the DOOR PHONE unit. Please call Telephone Technical Service for additional assistance.
