ARCOP- Voorsitter se storie.. Ciao Aflisti, November en die jaar is so te sê verby. Sal ons terug kyk na die klub se aktiwiteite roep ons in herinnering die hoogte punte van daar vroeg in die jaar waar ons begin het met ons Valeteinsontbyt saam met die JHB en Wesrand klub by the Common room.. beslis nie n Common geleentheid nie, veral met die wit Stelvio van Penta Montana daar voor die restaurant nie. Cars In The Park het weereens n rekord aantal Alfa s by Zwartkops opgelewer. Ons baandag was weereens n groot sukses, en dankie aan almal wat so hard gewerk het om n professionele dag daarvan te maak. Al was dit n oggend sessie, het ons nog steeds n baie goeie opkoms gehad. Dan was daar die skattejag saam met die Triumph klub wat almal baie geniet het. Dankie aan Nols van die Triumph klub vir die uitnodiging. Die Concourse de l Afrika, by die Mall of Africa het ook soos velede jaar n rekord aantal Alfa s gehad, wat bewys dat Alfisti graag hulle motors wil afwys as hulle n geleentheid kry. Ons wegnaweek hierdie jaar was besonders lekker met n kaasfabriek uitstappie en n wenner skaapbraai. Baie dankie aan die organiseerders en ons byeenkoms koordineerder. Al wat nou nog voorlê is die AGM, jaareindfunksie, en.vakansie!! Op die ledesake front, sluit ons die jaar af met meer as 30 lede. Die worsbroodjies en hamburgers het gehelp om die opkoms by Noggins te verbeter en die kuiergees n hupstootjie te gee. Dankie aan almal wat die noggins die jaar ondersteun het. 3

Regalia het hierdie jaar ook goeie verkope getoon en met die drie groot events het ons meer as R25 000 se verkope gehad. Finasieel sluit ons die jaar ook af op n goeie noot en nes verlede jaar met n positiewe bank balans vir die klub. Ons kon die jaar ook bekostig om die ledegelde weereens dieselfde te hou, Verder was ons ook in staat om skenkings aan die die Lions van Pretoria te maak vir hulle bydrae en hulp by die Baandag en Mall of Africa. Ons nuusblad het interessant gebly met die gereelde artikels, maar dan was daar ook die ekstras wat lede soos Nols ook vir ons gestuur het. Ek wil julle aanmoedig om die inisiatief te neem en interessante Alfa verwante artiekels vir ons aan te stuur in die toekoms. Vertel ons bietjie meer van jou eerste Alfa, hoe het jy hom gekoop,. waarom, wat was merkwaardig aan die gebeurtenis ens..ens. Ek wil ten slotte almal hartlilk bedank vir julle deelname aan die klub en sy verrigtinge hierdie afgelope jaar, en hoop om julle weer volgende jaar as lid van ARCOP te sien. Ek hoop om julle by die AGM, en die Jaareindfunksie te sien. Ek wil afsluit deur julle en julle geliefdes n Geseënde Kersfees toe te wens, n genotvolle vakansie,. ry veilig en alle voorspoed vir 2019!! Philip König 4

Uit die Redakteur se pen... So breek die laaste aktiewe maand vir die ARCOP lede aan! November, die voorlaaste maand aan die einde van die jaar! Ek het nogtans vir julle n nuusbrief met n paar interessante artikels saamgestel. Bennie Jordaan sluit sy reeks oor sy legendariese Alfa s af met n episode met n padblokkade! Julle weet nou al dat ek maklik oor Alfa s gesels! So ontmoet ek vir Hannes Steenkamp deur sy vrou Annette wat op n gemeenskaplike kosgroep op facebook is! Sy vertel my van hul reis na Italië en dat haar man en seun op die Italiaanse renbaan, Aria gaan ry! Kyk gerus ook die twee video insetsels.. dit is n belewenis! Dankie ook aan Hannes wat lid is van die Cape Alfa Romeo Club. Dan is daar n meer tegniese artikel van Corrie. asook terugvoer oor ons liefdadigheids byeenkoms wat die 11 November plaasgevind het. Baie dankie ook aan Hendri, klublede en vriende wat bygedra het om die dag vir die Paul Jungnickel inwoners op te vrolik! Noggin 18 Oktober 2018 Soos gebruiklik elke derde Donderdag van die maand, het die ARCOP lede weer kom aansit in die gesellige klubhuis saaltjie waar Philip die lede verwelkom het en n paar belangrike sake uitgelig het. Terwyl almal gesmul het aan n heerlike worsbroodjie is daar ook tussen die formaliteite deur gekuier. 8

Een van ons ou klublede het weer kom aansluit! Baie welkom aan Gordon Halford! Hendri het die lede ook ingelig oor die liefdadigheids rit wat ons elke jaar onderneem na die Paul Jungnickel Tehuis. Nols Pienaar het ook melding gemaak van n Jakaranda rit wat deur die MG klub gereël word en waarvan die Triumph klub ook deel uitmaak. ARCOP lede is ook uitgenooi om die Sondag by die groep aan te sluit. Soos gebruiklik is daar drie musketiers wat die noggin van die anderkant van die toonbank geniet! 9

Net so agter die Mnr die Aankondiger was die kookwater en koffie gereed om die heerlike worsbroodjie ete mee af te sluit saam met n bonus uit Sylvia se bedrywige kombuis! Baie dankie Sylvia vir die heerlike brownies wat smelt in die mond lekker was! Na afloop van die noggin, het die lede nog lekker saam gekuier.. om te gesels oor dié onderwerp waaroor ons Alfa familie maklik oor gesels.. ons Alfa s! - Alet Erasmus The beginning of something beautiful. Charity Run - Paul Jungnickel - 11 November 2018 Hendri du Plessis November tyd is liefdadigheid tyd vir ARCOP en ek het die voorreg gehad om dit vir die 2de jaar te kan reël. Ons was baie bevoorreg gewees om baie borge te kan hê, van klublede tot lede van n FB groep genaamd Eks van die Ooste. Ons het n borgskap ontvang van 200 cupcakes vir die inwoners, klublede en personeel van Paul Jungnickel. Ek wil van die geleentheid gebruik maak om vir elke persoon baie dankie te sê vir die bydrae om die byeenkoms n sukses te maak. Soos al die ander events, kan ek dit net reël, maar ek het elke persoon nodig om op te daag en die event saam te kom geniet. Nou het ons nog 2 events oor vir die jaar en die is die AGM, en jaareindfunksie op 2 Des. Hoop om almal daar te sien en saam te kuier. Groete Hendri du Plessis 11

n Kaapse draai in Italië! - Deur Hannes Steenkamp (Cape Alfa Romeo Club) Hannes en André Steenkamp Dis net in Milaan waar ons minder Alfa s gesien het as wat ons verwag het, behalwe waar ons parkeer het met die gehuurde Giuletta 1.6 Jtd( verrassend lewendig en lig op diesel)! Daar het ons 3 Alfa s langs mekaar gestaan ongelukkig nie n foto geneem nie. Veral in Rome was wel baie Alfa s. Wat ons opgeval het, was die baie ouer Alfa s, veral die 166 en almal was in n goeie toestand. Daar was baie nuwe Giulias en Stelvios, selfs n Giulia gesien wat op die Autostrada in n ongeluk betrokke was van agter teen n Audi vasgery. Ons het ook baie auto carriers gesien met nuwe Alfa s. Die Carabinieri/ polisie ry ook met Alfa s hoofsaaklik Giulettas. Ek het selfs in n scrapyard n 156 opgemerk. Ons was by die Alfa, Ferrari en Lamborgini museums. Die Alfa Romeo Museum, natuurlik loshand die beste. 13

Hier is twee foto s van die interresante museum Alfa s. Toe uiteindelik.. Adria wat n ondervinding!! Die cherrie op die koek, vir my natuurlik, van n wondelike vakansie wat ons kinders vir ons gegee het. Ons het n dedicated instrukteur gehad, omdat hy Engels magtig was en ons nie Italiaans nie. Hannes saam met sy instrukteur 14

André saam met die instrukteur Dit is moeilik om die gevoel en emosies te beskryf wat deur jou Petrolkop gaan as jy op 60+ vir die eerste keer agter die stuur van n Ferrari inskuif en dit nog op n renbaan.wat nogal besig was! Daar was altesaam 8 karre. Vir die rekord. Ferraria 430,458,488x2, Lamborgini, Porche, Nissan GTR en Giulia QV. Hannes se sertifikaat vir deelname wat hy ontvang het!!!! 15

(hy het 2 ekstra laps gekry, want hulle het vergeet om sy video te laai) heelwat vinniger as Pa hy is al n ou hand op die resiesbaan. Hy doen Clubmans Racing - Main circuit met n Alfa GTJ + Karting met n 125 Rotex (met Alfa stickers natuurlik )..en wie weet nie van die legendariese Streepie nie! Die foto s van Streepie Hierdie foto is op Killarney geneem, ±30 jaar nadat ons saam die kar gebou het. Ons het die huidige eienaar gehelp met Fuel starvation, tydens die jaarlike Passion for Speed ren 2017. 16

Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce wins in category 'Imported Standard Sedans/Station Wagons up to 50,000 Euro'. Both models also score third place in their respective overall category, ahead of major German competitors. Alfa Romeo 4c Spider also scores top ranking. Once a year, Germany's renowned car magazine 'sport auto' asks its performance-oriented readers about their favourite models. This is why the result of the 'sport auto AWARD', which focuses primarily on the dynamic capabilities of each competitor, is widely regarded as a benchmark for manufacturers of sports cars. For the second time in a row, the Alfa Romeo Giulia emerged strongly. In keeping with 2017, the range's top model, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, powered by a 2.9 V6 bi-turbo petrol engine delivering 375 kw (510 bhp), won the import class of the category 'Standard Sedans/Station Wagons up to 100,000 euro'. Die Alfa se tweede lewe. (deel 4) Deur Bennie Jordaan Vroeg November gaan ons een aand Limousine Inry toe daar by Bainsvlei. Ons is maar so raps oor die 2 maande getroud en woon verder aan op die Kimberley pad seker so 14 kilometer van Bainsvlei af. Dit is salig om met die Alfa te ry wat nou ten laaste n nuwe masjien het en heerlik loop. Daar is mos net iets anders aan n inryteater. Die springmielies, eetgoed drinkgoed. Die hele "vibe"... Dit is n baie spannende fliek. Skielik is daar vreeslike helder ligte op die skerm en die manne orals toet verwoed. Ekself skel op die ou wat nou sulke simpel goed aanvang en toet self. Tot my ontnugtering kom ek agter dat dit my Alfa se ligte is wat aangegaan het. Dit het net gebeur! Ek vlieg uit die kar, kry n no 13 spaander en maak gou die battery los. Die manne skree op my. Ek het nou ook die draad van die storie verloor. Na die fliek klim ek uit en koppel eers weer die battery se klamp. Die ligte is nou dood. Nadat ek die motor aangeskakel het skakel ek die ligte egter aan en lyk dit of alles weer funksioneer. So by tye raak die Alfa heeltemal deurmekaar en lyk dit of dit aan n tipe van auto-alzheimers grens. Die verskynsel is redelik gereeld en ek vermoed dit het sedert my paneelbord uithaal episode ontstaan. Alles was nooit weer altyd 100% reg na daardie storie nie. Ons ry die aand terug na ons kleinhoewe by Waterbron wat ons as jong getroude paar huur. Die fliek was nou bietjie opgekoffie deur die onaangekondigde ligte aansit situasie wat plaasgevind het. Skielik sien ek dat dit redelik donker raak voor my en die volgende oomblik sien ek blou ligte langs die pad en n hand wat waai. Ek kan nie onthou dat ek my ligte verdof het nie. Dis n padblokkade waar hulle motors aftrek wat onpadwaardig is. Naand oom sê ek met my heel vriendelikste stem. Hy groet my effe kortaf en ek wonder hoekom. Mens ken mos daardie stappie as n ou verkeersman so met sy hande in die sye stap en so stip na sekere goed staar. Na hy rondom die motor gestap het kom staan hy voor die motor en sê.. Brights! Ek skakel die hoofligte op die gevraagde bright 19

maar daar gebeur niks. Dan. Dim! Ek sien daar is iets wat flou skyn. Die bevele volg in egte militêre styl Flikkers Regs! Ek skakel dit aan maar daar is n doodse stilte van die flikker-eenheid. Nie eers die liggie brand nie. Links! skree die oom en die toon is al effens harder as wat ek gemaklik mee is. Hy skud sy kop en stap agtertoe. Rem! Ek trap die rempedaal en sien in my tuspieëeltjie dat hier nou dinge gebeur want ek sien die weerkaatsing van die remligte op die oom. Los! Ek los die rempedaal. Los!!!!! skreeu hy weer. Ek het egter lankal die pedaal gelos. Die ligte bly brand. Die kar gaan my vanaand in die sop laat beland! Hy stap weer om en ek klim intussen uit want ek weet hier kom n ding. Mannetjie, die kar is mos nou glad nie padwaardig nie! sê die oom met n effense toon wat grens aan wat ons altyd gebruik het met wegkruipertjie daardie Blok myself uitroep toon. Oom ek kan oom verseker dat alles netnou gewerk het REGTIG! Die oom stap na sy voertuig toe want ek weet daardie boek is in sy motor. Ek klim uit en gaan staan voor die kar. Net een lig brand en verder is alles dood. Ek haak af en gee die Alfa n verskriklike skop op die voorste buffer en modderskerm. Skielik gaan al die "dims" en brights aan. Die linker flikkerlig begin flikker en die remligte gaan dood. Alles werk. Die oom draai om en staar na die motor. Ek hou my dom. Oom, ek verstaan nou nie maar alles werk dan? Hy kom stadig teruggestap en lig sy wysvinger. Sorg dat jy daardie goed regkry en beskou hierdie as n finale waarskuwing. Ek knik instemmend en klim in en trek stadig weg..bang dat iets weer gaan skeefloop. Toe ek so entjie weg is kyk ons na mekaar en begin lag! Die volgende oggend is ek weer tussen die drade in en ek kry die probleem. Dit is n aard-draad wat nie behoorlik vas is nie. So word daar nog n "ligte" probleempie uitgeskakel. Daardie dae! Heerlik om jonk getroud te wees met n pragtige meisie, n Alfa te hê wat net so wispelturig is soos n mooi vrou en na die maan te kyk as jy by jou hek inry. Liefde? Ja, beslis. Four-Cylinder Monsters Nine Of The Largest Four-Bangers Ever Ingestuur deur Corrie de Wilde At EngineLabs, we are fans of the internal combustion engine in all its glorious iterations. While we mostly focus on domestic V8s, we by no means have blinders on to the rest of the spectrum of engines. As such, we bring you this video, chronicling nine of the largest inline four-cylinder engines ever produced for four-wheeled automobiles. While inline fours are generally thought of as small, high-winding engines powering fuel-efficient commuter cars, in fact there have been a number of large, robust inlinefours that displace serious cubes and make some respectable torque. Generally, this comes from the fact that in order to increase displacement, the designs are usually undersquare, with a long stroke, lending themselves to low-rpm torque. Here s a deeper look at five of the more interesting designs. The GM LLV (or Vortec 2900) is definitely the most modern of the big four-cylinders on this list.the now-discontinued Chevrolet LLV, also called the Vortec 2900, was part of the GM Atlas line of inline engines, which included four-, five-, and six-cylinder designs. The big four-cylinder has a 3.76-inch bore, with a 4.00-inch stroke to come in at just over 2.9 liters, or 178 cubic inches. Even with the long stroke, it still made power higher in the RPM range than one might expect, with its 185 peak-horsepower happening at 5,600 rpm, with a 6,300-rpm rev limiter to go against the norm for big four-bangers. The Pontiac Trophy 4 inline four-cylinder was a relatively short-lived design, only produced between 1961 and 1963, but at 3.2 liters, or almost 200 cubic inches, was a stout engine. Basically half of Pontiac s Trophy V8 engine, it shared the same 4.125- inch bore and 3.75-inch stroke (along with quite a few mechanical components) making it the only oversquare big four-cylinder on this list. The engine was developed by John DeLorean, so it s fitting that it powered his other brainchild of the time, the Tempest. When fitted with the factory four-barrel carburetor, the Power Pack variant made a whopping 166 horsepower and somewhere north of 215 lb-ft of torque. The 200.5 cubic inch (3.3-liter) Ford L-Head managed to squeeze out a whopping 40 horsepower from its 3.876-inch bore and 4.250-inch stroke, but got between 25 and 30 miles per gallon in the Model A and Model AA variant vehicles, while an upgraded version lasted two years beyond the Model A alongside the then-new V8 engine, the Flathead Ford. While not a spectacular engine, it does occupy a significant seat in history; besides being one of the largest four-cylinder engines in automotive history, it was also one of the designs that helped shape the face of mass-produced engines. Not a whole lot of information exists on the Fiat Tipo 55. However what we do know is that the engine powering the base 1912-1916 Tipo 55 was an 8.5-liter (almost 522 ci) 21

inline-four-cylinder that made in the neighborhood of 60-75 horsepower. There was a Speed Car variant, which had a 9.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and was guaranteed to hit 70 miles per hour straight off the factory floor. That was an absolutely incredible accomplishment in the pre-wwi era, and very few of the speed cars are known to exist today. The most modern of these 4 Cylinder engines is the Porche 968. The 968 was powered by an updated version of the 944's straight-four engine, now displacing 3.0 L with 104 mm bore, 88 mm stroke and producing 240 PS (237 bhp; 177 kw). Changes to the 968's powertrain also included the addition of Porsche's then-new VarioCam variable valve timing system, newly optimized induction and exhaust systems, a dualmass flywheel, and updated engine management electronics among other more minor revisions. The 968's engine was the fourth-largest four-cylinder ever offered in a production car up to that time. Finally, we come to the largest four-cylinder to ever grace an automobile chassis, and that s the Beast of Turin, the Fiat S76. This should be no secret to EngineLabs readers, as we ve featured its revival video, along with its appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. However, for those unfamiliar with it, this beast was produced in 1910 with a massive 28.5-liter (1,730 cubic inches no the decimal isn t in the wrong spot) four-cylinder engine. The undersquare 190mm (7.48-inch) bore and 250mm (9.84-inch) stroke produced a whopping-for-the-time 286 horsepower and an unbelievable 1,991 lb-ft of torque. It has three spark plugs per cylinder and a lowvoltage magneto for the ignition, and as you can tell from the video, could use an ignition box upgrade something fierce. Audi managed the unthinkable and turned Golf sexy with the TT, BMW made Bond cool again with the Z3 and Mercedes revolutionised this segment with the SLK and its folding hard top. The passage of time however has not been as kind to these 3 Germans as it has been to Pininfarina's 916 Spider. Enrico Fumia, the designer of the 916 GTV/Spider proved yet again the Italian style to be timeless, even more so today, when we're comparing the clean and beautiful lines of the last wedge shaped automobile to the contemporary overdesigned cars. It s what everyone wants to be, or own, or preferably both. First has significant meaning to pretty much everyone, but that s especially true in the world of collectible autos and even moreso when talking about vintage Italian iron. That s why this 1921 Alfa Romeo G1 is on our pages today, because it is in fact Alfa Romeo s first production model. And it's for sale. Aside from the obvious, only 52 were built, and this is believed to be the only complete G1 left in the world. it features the manufacturer s first six-cylinder engine a whopping 6.3-liter inline six that made 70 horsepower and it maxed out north of 80 miles per hour. Considering this was the same era dominated by the 20-horsepower Ford Model T, the G1 was certainly something of a screamer back in the day. According to RM Sotheby s this particular Alfa Romeo is chassis 6018, which is thought to be one of the early production models. It was shipped to Australia (as was pretty much the entire production run) where its owner stored the car from nearly the beginning. It was found in the late 1940s and stored again until a noted Alfa Romeo enthusiast named Ross Flewell-Smith learned of its existence, and bought it in 1965. He restored the car in the 1970s, and it was brought back to life yet again in the 2000s, leading to the condition it s in today. 25

Being an Alfa Romeo of some stature and significance, it s received multiple awards at Pebble Beach and has basically toured events around the world. Not only is it the first Alfa model and the only one known to be complete, it s also a fully running and driving machine. This car will cross the auction block at the RM Sotheby s auction in Phoenix, Arizona this coming January, and it will find a new owner because it s listed with no reserve. Of course, if you want to have the distinction of owning the first Alfa Romeo, make sure your Swiss bank account is stocked it s estimated that very special piece of automotive history will fetch as much as $1.5 million.
