Never point guns or applicator nozzles at yourself or other persons. SIG05_EN_A_0100 2000 Nordson Corporation

Safety 1-5 Less-obvious Dangers WARNING: An operator or service technician working with the equipment should be aware of the less-obvious dangers that often cannot be completely minimized at production sites: Pressurized system components Exposed surfaces of the unit which cannot be practically safeguarded. They may be hot and take time to cool after the unit has been operating. The possibility that electrical potentials may remain in the system after the system was de-energized Liquid adhesive vapors or hot melt material and vapors Hydraulically or pneumatically operated system components Uncovered winding parts Danger of Burns Contact with hot melt materials or hot areas of the unit may produce a severe skin burn. WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear heat-protective clothing, safety goggles, and/or heat-protective gloves depending on the symbols shown. Be extremely careful when using hot melt material. Even solidified material may still be very hot. Always wear protective clothing which safely covers all exposed parts of the body. In case of burns: Immediately cool affected skin areas using cold, clean water. Do not forcefully remove hot melt material from the skin. Immediately seek medical attention. 2000 Nordson Corporation SIG05_EN_A_0100

1-6 Safety Maintenance / Repair Allow only qualified personnel to perform the procedures described in this document. Work should only be carried out on a completely depressurized system, following all safety procedures. WARNING: Some voltage is still present in the control cabinet even after equipment has been turned off at the main switch. Complete the following steps prior to maintenance or repair: Disconnect external power supply. Lock out external power supply. Check no voltage is present. Ground and short. Cover nearby live sections. Secure pneumatically- and hydraulically-operated equipment against uncontrolled movement. Only use genuine Nordson parts. Liquid Adhesive NOTE: Depending on the configuration of the liquid adhesive application system, high pressure may remain between application head and pressure regulator or pump even after the system has been switched off using the main switch or the emergency stop. This especially applies to multi hose configurations between pumps and application heads. Prior to maintenance and repair work it is therefore essential to ensure that all liquid adhesive application system components are depressurized as follows: 1. Release input pressure in front of pump by shutting off customer compressed air supply. 2. Release any remaining system pressure behind the pumps by manually operating the application heads. Switch off system electrically. If liquid adhesive application system is left idle for extended periods (e.g. overnight or long breaks) Nordson recommends applying Vaseline to the application head nozzles to prevent them from drying out and becoming blocked as a result. Hot Melt Material Follow the specific instructions provided in this manual to relieve the system pressure in the entire unit. Always use tools with insulated handles when removing or installing components. SIG05_EN_A_0100 2000 Nordson Corporation

Safety 1-7 Cleaning NOTE: Always refer to the manufacturer s Material Safety Data Sheet or material information sheet before working with any cleaning fluids. WARNING: Never clean any aluminum part or flush any system using halogenated hydrocarbon fluids. Examples of common halogenated hydrocarbons are: dichloromethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethylene, and perchloroethylene. Halogenated hydrocarbons may react violently with aluminum parts. WARNING: Fire, open flame, and smoking are prohibited when cleaning fluids are used. Observe all explosion prevention regulations. Cleaning fluids may only be heated using temperature-controlled and explosion-protected heaters. Never use an open flame to clean the system or its components. Ensure sufficient room ventilation to draw off vapors. Liquid Adhesive Check that (warm) water can be used to clean the liquid adhesive system components, possibly with the addition of household washing up liquid. If this is not possible, use only the cleaning fluid stated in the liquid adhesive manufacturer s information. If the manufacturer recommends heating the cleaner, note the flash point. Disposal must be according to the waste key in the DIN Safety Data Sheet. Liquid adhesives or residue, solvent or separating agents must not be released into open waterways. In the case of a leak or spillage, contain liquid and if necessary use an absorbant material e.g. sawdust to soak it up; then proceed according to the relevant waste disposal regulations. If the liquid adhesive application system is to be idle for an extended period, the entire system should be flushed and outlets sealed with Vaseline. Warm water is usually used to flush application systems with which water based liquid adhesives are processed. If the liquid adhesive manufacturer specially recommends a flushing agent, the manufacturer s safety and disposal details must be followed. Hot Melt Material Use only cleaning fluids designed or intended to be used with the hot melt material being used in the unit. Never use paint fluids under any circumstances. Note the flash point of the cleaning fluid used. Only use a controlled heating method to heat fluids. 2000 Nordson Corporation SIG05_EN_A_0100

1-8 Safety Liquid Adhesives As there is a wide variety of liquid adhesives available with different compositions and characteristics, it is impossible here to give an exhaustive list of safety notes reflecting the typical characteristics of liquid adhesives. The use of liquid adhesives in Nordson s liquid adhesive application systems therefore requires reference to the liquid adhesive manufacturer s documents beforehand. Information relating to safety aspects e.g. concerning solvent content, hazards and countermeasures in the event of liquid adhesive coming into contact with skin or mucous membranes are contained in the technical data sheets and the DIN Safety Data Sheets from the manufacturer. NOTE: It may be necessary to refer to the manufacturer s notes on the use of materials from a third party. These may be required for processing a liquid adhesive, but hazards arising from their use are not necessarily mentioned by the manufacturer of the liquid adhesive. Liquid adhesives may still give off vapors when they are processed correctly. The smell produced can cause some annoyance. This is especially true where liquid adhesives are used that contain solvent, thus requiring the use of breathing equipment e.g. a filter. If the prescribed processing conditions are not followed, harmful decomposition products may develop. Therefore, the vapors must be removed. Wash hands well before breaks and when work is finished. If liquid adhesive comes into contact with eyes or mucous membranes, rinse well with water especially the eyes. Change damp clothes, and seek medical advice if it is swallowed. If solvents or separating agents are used to process a liquid adhesive, follow the safety and disposal information from the manufacturer. SIG05_EN_A_0100 2000 Nordson Corporation

Safety 1-9 Thermoplastic Hot Melt Material NOTE: Always refer to the material manufacturer s Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or material information sheet before working with any hot melt material. Action in the Event of a Malfunction Ensure the work area is adequately ventilated. Do not exceed recommended processing temperatures. Doing so creates a danger to personnel due to decomposition of the material. If a system or any equipment in a system malfunctions, shut off the system immediately and perform the following steps: Disconnect and lock out system electrical power. Close hydraulic and pneumatic shutoff valves and relieve pressures. Identify the reason for the malfunction and correct it before restarting the system. 2000 Nordson Corporation SIG05_EN_A_0100

Description 2-1 Section 2 Description Intended Use Pressure controllers in the series can be used to control proportional pressure control valves and/or glue application pumps for Nordson liquid adhesive guns. They are designed to process cold glue and hot melt adhesive. The two integrated outlets for electropneumatic adhesive guns allow continuous gluing. units can be combined with Nordson pattern controllers for intermittent gluing. NOTE: Cold glue and other adhesives are referred to as glue in this manual. The pressure controller is referred to as controller. Unintended Use - Example - The unit may not be operated in a potentially explosive atmosphere. Residual Risks WARNING: Do not touch the contacts after disconnecting the mains plug. Capacitive charge from the electronic components causes the controller to retain residual voltage, which could result in a slight electrical shock upon contact. The capacitive charge is discharged after approx. 60 seconds. WARNING: Glue escapes from the adhesive gun when the solenoid valves are triggered. Risk of splashing. Wear safety goggles. Do not program during adhesive gun assembly. The risk is particularly high during: Production machine startup Reverse mode Manual mode 2006 Nordson Corporation

2-2 Description Introduction The is a user-friendly pressure controller that controls proportional pressure control valves and/or glue application pumps as a factor of the machine speed and that triggers electropneumatic adhesive guns for continuous gluing. The unit is operated with easy-to-use switches and potentiometers in conjunction with LEDs and a four-digit seven-segment display. Updated Bill of Material Please observe that your Nordson equipment may differ slightly from that described in the manual or certain information provided in it. Refer to the updated Bill of Material which is packed with your equipment. Description of Functions The following principle drawing demonstrates gluing with the. Adhesive is to be applied to a substrate (9). The production machine, also called the parent machine, transports the substrate on a conveyor belt under the liquid adhesive gun (6). When the production machine has reached the minimum speed, the begins gluing. NOTE: In general, a production machine refers to a machine in which Nordson equipment for adhesive application is integrated (e.g. a packing machine). The term means the same as parent machine, which may appear in other Nordson literature. A gear box mechanically links the encoder (4) to the production machine transport equipment. The encoder is needed to determine the parent machine speed, and it supplies a pulse for each mm of the covered path. When the production machine has reached the set minimum speed, the solenoid valve on the adhesive gun switches, allowing the constant compressed air to enter the adhesive gun and the nozzle to open. Depending on the speed of the production machine, current of 0 to 20 ma is supplied to the proportional pressure control valve (2). The current causes the position of the diaphragm in the adhesive pressure regulator (12) to change. The glue in the container (13) is fed to the adhesive pressure regulator (12) by the pump. The glue reaches the adhesive guns (6) with either low or high pressure, depending on the diaphragm setting. 2006 Nordson Corporation
