INSTALLTION TIPS: Due to minor variations in vehicle frames, we recommend that you leave all the U-Joint pinch bolts loose until the Rackzilla is mounted. Then rock the steering wheel back and forth to allow the U-Joints to align themselves. Complete the installation by tightening these bolts. Removal of the original Rack and Pinion: 1. Park vehicle on a level surface, making sure your front wheels and steering wheel are straight. Make sure vehicle is in park, and set the parking brake. Disconnect the battery until power is needed, and chock or block the rear wheels to insure the vehicle is stable. 2. Center the steering wheel. With a tape measure, measure the distance between the 2 front wheels from the same spot on the tread. Measure from the front of the tires and the rear of the tires. The difference is your total toe. Record that measurement. You will need to reset it there when the new rack is installed. 3. Remove the nuts on the top of the outer heim joints. Repeat for both sides. 4. Remove the studs in the steering arms, these will be replaced with the new ones included in the kit. Page 2 657150
5. Remove the steering shaft that leads from the bottom of the steering column to the rack and pinion by removing the bolts that are threaded into the u-joints. This will be replaced with a new one. 6. Remove the 4 bolts that hold the original rack and pinion to the frame. Passenger Side Drivers Side 7. Once these bolts are removed, the rack and pinion may be removed. Slide it out from the driver side to the passenger side. While sliding it out make sure the steering shaft also disconnects from the rack. Page 3 657150
1. Slide the rackzilla into place, making sure the pinion aims up towards the driver s side of the vehicle. 2. Make sure the paint marks on the pinion and housing line up. This ensures that the rack is centered. INSTALLATION of the Rackzilla: 3. If you DO NOT have a power steering system, follow steps 4-8. Otherwise, skip them. 4. Loosen the 2 bolts for the master cylinder. 5. Bolt on the shaft support bracket with the heim joint loosely installed as shown in the picture. 6. Using the new master cylinder bolts included in the kit, bolt the shaft support to the master cylinder using the existing holes. 7. Slide the longer shaft through the heim joint. 8. Connect the two shafts together and hand tighten the pinch bolt on the U-joint. 9. Slide the U-Joint into the rack and pinion first and then the steering column. The u-joint can only be engaged on the pinion in one position. Make sure the flats on the pinion and inside of the u- joint line up. 10. Use the original bolts to bolt in the new rack and pinion. The 4 holes on the rackzilla bracket will line up with the holes that secured the original rack and pinion. Bolt the rackzilla in place. Page 4 657150
11. Once the Rackzilla is bolted down, tighten the U-Joint pinch bolts. 12. If you do not have a power steering system, tighten the bolts to lock the shaft support in place. 13. To connect the new Rod Ends, the new stud needs to be installed into the knuckle. When installing the new studs, ensure they are placed from the top to bottom in the knuckle. Place the heim joint over the stud and thread the nuts on the top and bottom of the stud. 14. Measure from the same spots on your front tires and set your toe to what you had previously recorded. To adjust the toe, loosen the jam nut and spin the heim joints in or out as needed. Make sure you have at least ¾ of engagement of the tie rod into the heim joint. Tighten the jam nut and make sure the steering wheel is centered. It may be necessary to remove the steering wheel and re-center it.
