We just don t like to compromise. And since we both care for the environment and love boating, we had to come up with a solution beneficial for both. We ve chosen to embrace all the latest technology, to further refine it and then add our own ground-breaking innovations. For starters, the entire Volvo Penta engine range complies with the most stringent EU and US emission regulations. Add the world s most efficient drive systems: Volvo Penta IPS and Aquamatic. Overall emissions can then be further reduced, thanks to much lower fuel consumption from higher efficiency. You also get greater onboard comfort, higher safety and reliability plus superior performance. Or as we like to put it: Clean. Quiet. Powerful. The entire D-series diesel engine range complies with US EPA Tier 2 and the European RCD regulation.

Benefits of volvo Penta FAST ON THE PLANE. FUEL EFFICIENT AT SPEED. Quickly out of the hole. Efficient cruising speed regardless of load. Safe and predictable driving fun. That s what you can expect from your Volvo Penta engine. Unique marine torque The key to true marine performance lies in torque. It defines the response you get when you open the throttle. We apply the latest in engine technology to precisely define the torque curve for every engine model. We call it unique marine torque, and it s exclusive for Volvo Penta engines. Instant response. Carries the loads. Unique marine torque gives you high torque from low revs, for easy manoeuvring and fast acceleration. At high revs, fullthrottle torque increases if the engine loses rpm due to heavy load. This gives you high and efficient cruising speed even with a fully loaded boat. Full diesel power always 10 %. That s how much power an ordinary diesel engine can lose as the fuel in the tank gradually heats up when driving. Volvo Penta EVC diesel engines feature automatic fuel temperature compensation, giving you full power for as long as you cruise, even in warm climates. The D3, D4 and D6 also feature fuel quality compensation. This means you can 10

Benefits of volvo Penta The unique marine torque giving dazzling acceleration is a Volvo Penta diesel hallmark. It is achieved through a large engine swept volume and thanks to a number of model specific features: VGT variable geometry turbo; common rail; the turbo/compressor combination or the twin-entry turbo with pulse charging. choose environmentally adapted diesel without losing performance. Gasoline performance Our V6 and V8 engines are all available with MPI multi-port, electronic fuel injection. This gives you safe starts regardless of engine temperature, smooth idling, low emissions and totally unmatched driving feel with instant engine response. Duoprop delivers Volvo Penta s technology with twin counter-rotating propellers gives unequalled efficiency. This makes it possible to take full advantage of the unique marine torque and high power produced by the engine and turn it into acceleration and speed. It also means less fuel burned, and thus lower emissions. 11

Benefits of volvo Penta Easier, safer and more fun with EVC Trip computer. Engine data in a chart plotter. Smart functionality. Electronic shift and throttle. Built-in safety functions that protect the engine and give easier service. Volvo Penta s reliable EVC system opens up a wealth of new opportunities that make driving easier, safer and more fun. EVC Electronic Vessel Control is Volvo Penta s common electronic platform. Based on the same CAN-bus technology used in ships, planes and cars, EVC gives total integration of engine, transmission, instrumentation and more. With EVC, all information is distributed on one CAN-bus backbone. This radically reduces the amount of wiring and connectors required, leading to much higher reliability and easier installation. It also opens up for new and smarter functionality. Smart functions and options EVC offers improved functionality as standard or option. Features that are impossible with standard systems and give you better safety, comfort and driving economy. Active safety EVC acts as your personal engineer, constantly supervising all important functions and taking precautionary measures if anything is wrong, always keeping you updated. EVC is also the mechanic s best help, providing invaluable data. Pre-start function tests, checking vital functions. If a malfunction is detected with the engine running, the driver is alerted with a sound and a message in plain text. If the malfunction detected is serious (e.g. high engine temperature), EVC reduces power to protect the engine from damage, still making it possible to continue driving. Shifting at engine rpm so high that it will damage the transmission, is prevented. At service or repair, vital engine data is available for the mechanic with a special diagnostic tool. 12

Technology index Technology that makes a difference 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 Rigid engine design Volvo Penta marine diesels are robust and immensely strong for minimal vibrations and a long service life. The engine block 1 and the onepiece cylinder head 2 are designed to enhance rigidity. To further strengthen the design, a ladder frame 3 is bolted to the base of the engine block (D3-D12). The in-line configuration allows room for a well-dimensioned crankshaft 4 with large bearing surfaces. Unit injectors The D9, D11 and D12 diesel engines feature electronically controlled unit injectors. The injectors work at pressures up to 2 000 bar to produce the best possible fuel-to-air ratio at any load conditions. In combination with the 4-valve technology also used in the engines, this ensures an efficient flow of gases. The electronically controlled injection, the precise control of air flow and the injection spray patterns mean reduced fuel consumption, low exhaust emissions, and outstanding overall performance. Common rail D3, D4 and D6 feature electronically controlled common rail fuel injection, making it possible to control fuel injection in a way that is impossible with conventional systems. The common rail control unit 1, controls the system via several parameters, e.g. throttle position, rpm, temperature, boost pressure. The high-pressure fuel pump 2 feeds the rail with fuel at up to 1 600 bar. In the rail 3, full fuel pressure is always available for the injectors. The injectors 4, which are operated with extreme precision by the electronic governing, feed the cylinders up to three times per stroke. Electronic fuel injection Gasoline engines (except 3.0) are available with electronically controlled multi-port fuel injection. The electronic control unit monitors different engine parameters and precisely defines the exact fuel amount for every driving situation. The benefits: Better response, faster acceleration Safe starts, regardless of engine temp 36

Technology index Smooth, stable idling Reduced fuel consumption Lower emissions Protective and diagnostic functions Charging sensor With a Volvo Penta engine, you get efficient charging with the standard configuration. The complete diesel range* features 115A/12V or 80A/24V alternators and the built-in charging sensor. The charging sensor controls the voltage delivered by the alternator. The unique feature is that the sensor measures the delivered voltage at the battery bank. Therefore it automatically compensates for the voltage drop that is more or less unavoidable in an onboard electrical system. The result is perfect battery charging for single or multiple battery banks, without the risk of overcharging. * D3 has 140A and the gasoline range 75A alternators, without charging sensor. Powertrim assistant The powertrim assistant is an option for Aquamatic with EVC. The drive will trim automatically to a pre-set function. The drive is automatically trimmed in during acceleration to get you fast on the plane and then gradually trimmed out at higher engine rpm. You get perfect visibility and a comfortable ride. Fully manual override is available at any time. Low-speed mode The low-speed mode for D4, D6, D9, D11 and D12 inboard shafts plus Volvo Penta IPS is totally integrated in the EVC system. This gives seamless operation with the standard controls. With default settings, the slip coupling in the gearbox gives approx. 50% lower boat speed at idling for greatly improved manoeuvrability in close quarters or while fishing. The slip is controlled with the same lever as the engine speed. During the first Low-speed zone Throttle zone Reverse Neutral Low-speed zone Throttle zone Forward 15 degrees of lever movement, engine speed is at idling. Speed is increased by reducing the slip. When the lever is pushed further, the transmission is fully engaged and speed is increased from higher engine rpm. Duoprop propellers Volvo Penta propellers for Duoprop drives and Volvo Penta IPS take full advantage of the twin, counter-rotating concept. Developing propellers for Duoprop technology differs considerably from conventional drives with single propellers. The front and rear propellers must interact and carry out an equal share of the work, otherwise efficiency drops and transmission wear increases. The propellers are available in easy-to-choose series, with each set designed for a specific speed range. All propellers are made of 1 superstrength material crafted for propeller duty with a certain flexibility built in. 2 The rear propeller with smaller diameter works inside the flow contraction created by the front prop. 3 Each propeller is perfectly in balance, by weight, size and cavitation with 4 perfect curving from thousands of computer calculations in a uniquely developed program. 5 Specifically adapted shock-absorbing bushings handle rotational and pulling forces. All this give a unique Volvo Penta combination of curving, the surface of the blades and the cavitation design leading to maximum efficiency and comfort. 2 3 1 5 4 37
