Furness Railway Wagon Co. NER/LNER/BR G1 Box Van Wheels, paint and transfers required to complete. The Parts. Parts 8/9/10 12/13/15/16 Part Part 11 Part 6 Part 2 Part 3 Part 14 Part 1 Part 4 Parts 5/7 not shown Assembly of van. 1. Wash and clean up the castings making sure that the castings fit together before gluing. 1 03/03/2014

2. Next drill out the holes in the buffer beams, of the end (part1) for the coupling hooks and the buffers. 3. Now fit the bottom lip casting (part2) to the Side casting (part 3). The lip casting is thinner than the side casting so make sure that it lines up with the front of the side casting. 4. Now it is a good idea to dry fit the sides assemblies, ends, chassis (part 4) together. Make sure that the sides fit between the ends and flush with the chassis. Once you are happy with the fit, fix in to position with superglue. 2 03/03/2014

5. Now fit the end supports (part 5). 6. Next fit the etched strapping (part 6), as shown. Care is required not to get to much glue on the strapping as this could cover the strapping. Then punch out the rivets on the sole bar etch (part 7) and attach. 7. Next drill and fit the wire into the ends 8. Next, assemble the links (part 8) on to the coupling hook (part 9) and push through the slot. Now push the spring (part 10) over the back of the back of the coupling hook and bend the tags over to secure the spring in place. 3 03/03/2014

Then fix the four buffers (part 11) into the holes in the buffer beam using two part epoxy. 9. Now take the W axel guards (part 12) and fold over the axel box retaining bars at the bottom then glue to the inside sole bar as shown. 10. Assemble a wheel set, 2 x bearing s and 1 x wheel/axle unit. Slide the assembly into position and make sure that the wheels are free running. There is no need to glue the bearings into the bearing extension castings. Repeat for the other wheel set. Now fit the axel box covers (part 13) to front of the W-irons. 11. Next take the etched brakes (part 14) punch out the rivets and solder together. These can then be mounted on to the chassis next the wheel as shown. Using the etched V hangers (part 15) against the bottom of sole-bar and next to link arm of the etched brake assembly. Glue the 4 03/03/2014

casting into position using two part epoxy resin, this will give you opportunity for adjustment. 12. Next fix the brake lever and ratchet casting (part 16) to the sole-bar and to the outside of the V hanger as shown. 13. Finally fit the roof (part 17), making sure that the end line up and are square. Paint the model in the livery of your choice. 5 03/03/2014

History of the Wagon This represents the Northern Eastern Railway s standard box van. Over 1500 were built in batched between 1886 and 1903. 1176 were taken into LNER ownership in 1923, all but 6 had been scrapped by 1940 and no of these were in use by the goods department. 2 service vehicles did manage to survive in to preservation. The only variation in the building of these vans was the braking systems. The standard vans were fitted with a single brake block on each side, with a common cross shaft, with two brake levers pointing in the same direction. Some of the vans were also fitted with Westinghouse Airbrakes, while others were through piped for Automatic Vacuum Brakes (AVB) and Westinghouse Airbrakes. These vans would have been a common site in goods trains from Scotland, Southern England. The NER s pre 1903 livery was light grey above the sole bars and black below. Lettering was simple with a large N.E.R. in white with black back shading on the top left hand side of the wagon. After 1903 the shade of grey became darker and the back shading was dropped. After 1911 the small letters were swopped for a large N E. LNER livery copies the practice of the NER. However in 1936 the LNER repainted all unfitted stock in red oxide. Those of the wagons that managed to survive past 1947 would have been eventually grey if they were lucky. Known running numbers are 01759 (service stock), 4791, 10048, 12399 and 90837-91286. 6 03/03/2014
