Welcome Message A warm and Sunny welcome (hopefully not just metaphorically) to the 6 th Lakes Classic Vehicle Show organised by Windermere & Ambleside Lions Club. Thank you for your support as a result of which this year s major beneficiaries, Blood Bikes, Cumbria & Langdale & Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team will receive financial help. This year we are expecting something in the region of 200+ exhibitors, many of whom, have supported this show since its inception. Without the exhibitors, there would be no show, but we hope that as well as perusing the vehicles you will have time to take advantage of the other things on offer. If you are hungry or thirsty then our range of caterers should be able to satisfy your needs, for the energetic there is the Pit Stop Challenge run by the students of Kendal College, Scalextric for the young at heart, music to lift the spirits, the pot shy to release any frustration on and various other things which we hope will entertain you. Thank you one and all. There have also been plentiful donations which mean our Bottle Tombola should not be bereft of prizes. Gilpin Lodge Hotel have generously donated a stunning prize of One night dinner, bed & breakfast, including their taster menu in Hrishi s Michelin starred restaurant. This includes aperitifs and matched wines, which we are holding a silent auction for. You can take part in this auction by visiting the secretary s tent and placing your bid, if you so desire. I hope that this year s show runs as successfully as the previous ones. Those of you who help with other such events will appreciate what a mammoth effort it is to put something like this on. Windermere and Ambleside Lions Club is part of Lions Clubs International, the largest service organisation in the world with 1.4 million members. Lions Clubs International was founded in 1917 in America by Melvin Jones and now consists of over 46,000 clubs in 208 countries. The first Lions club in the UK was formed in London on March 1st 1950 encouraged by some Canadian Lions who had helped British children during the war. On a visit to Canada, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, had personally thanked these Lions for their help and they suggested that a Lions Club should be formed in England. Lions in the British Isles and Ireland now make up 945 clubs with a total of over 20,000 members. The Lions Club of Windermere and Ambleside currently has 17 members and serves the communities of Windermere and Ambleside and also Grasmere, Hawkshead and Staveley helping financially with youth projects, organising entertainment and trips for the elderly and disabled, delivering firewood in the winter to those who need it and lending a hand at local community events. The club raises money with events such as this classic vehicle show; with the summer fun festival and with the bouncy castle in Bowness on summer weekends. Through the Lions Clubs International Foundation the club also helps with projects overseas including relief in disaster areas and provision of clean water, work to eradicate preventable blindness and other medical help for developing countries. As well as the work, Lions enjoy social activities amongst their own club members and with members from other clubs.
