South Texas HET News A BIG COUNTRY REGIONAL CHAPTER OF THE HUDSON ESSEX TERRAPLANE CLUB Visit us on the Web @ http://south-texas-hudson.org V O L U M E 2 I S S U E 4 A U G U S T 2 0 1 2 WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! HAPPY Labor Day! INSIDE THIS ISSUE: President Rick s Notes Chapter officers 1/6 1 Last Meeting s 2 recap Odds & Ends 3 Wanted and For Sale / Membership Form Calendar of events 4 5 Hudson Tips 7 What a month August was, many, many 100 degree days, and it was not a dry heat. For me, I had to work everyday from the 13 th through the 29 th. The Labor Day weekend came just in time. I am completely exhausted. Still am, but the newsletter editor beckons. I wish that I could say that I got a lot done on my Hornet, but all I managed to do was find even more things that need to be fixed. I was able to score a very old Snap-On brake drum puller, in pretty decent condition. The Hornet's radiator neck had been replaced, before I got the car, and it was running a 13 pound cap. Since the system was designed for 7 pounds, that would explain the two leaks found in the radiator. I'll have to pull the heater core, and have it tested, since it too, was overstressed. The stock AC-3, 7 pound cap is a deep cap, and won't fit on the current neck. I'll have to try to find an original style neck, compatible with the AC-3 cap. In my copious spare time. ;) Vicki Chilton is stepping down as Sunshine Coordinator. Being the working mother of twp young boys is already a lot of work. ;) I will be taking over the Sunshine Coordinator responsibilities, until we can find another volunteer. Thank you for your efforts, Vicki. The Kerrville meeting was especially cool. Our next meeting has been rescheduled to be at the Highway 77 Cafe, just north of Rosebud. See the meeting information elsewhere in the newsletter. Look out for the speed trap. If anyone has something Hudson or HET that they would like have on the meeting agenda, please email me. Having wrested this meeting from the San Marcos location, I really hope that our members in the northern area can turn out for this, with their Hudsons. What is your favorite Hudson? (there can be more than one) Admittedly, these sorts of things are a matter of personal preference, but I recently find myself suddenly quite enamored of the early stepdown two door hard top broughams. There is Bob & Carole Colenbough's 49, which is a beautiful example, and which triggered this whole kick. Examples of others, http:// www.flickr.com/photos/paddyspig/4730479663/in/set- 72157624082054336 and the next 5 or so pictures. PAGE 2 VOLUME 2 ISSUE 4 IF you live in the Austin Texas area and need a ride to a meeting, contact RODNEY LEMMON. He has volunteered to assure you have a ride to the meeting. Cell: 512 964-0361 July Meeting Kemah Recap - Our Last Meeting Your editor was AWOL for the August 11--Kemah, TX: Meet at the Cadillac Bar. On that day Yolanda and I were on the last leg of our annual trip from Texas to New York. Treasurer Steve Brookins emailed me 0361 during my travels, noting he would be unable to make the meeting and provided a Treasury Balance report of $2,241.11. Because of my absence there will be no secretary s report. President Rick provided the following summary of the meeting: Our August meeting was in Kemah, and it was hot and humid. My hearing aids shorted out. ;) Seriously. Everyone that made it, seemed to have a good time, in spite of the lack of Hudsons in attendance. Russell Chilton invited potential new member named Jeremiah who is the proud new owner of a 36 Hudson 8 long wheel base sedan. Our round trip mileage was just under 500 miles, and Messrs. Davenport & Clark probably weren't much less than that. Texas Its Official! CHAPTER NAME TAGS The South-Texas Chapter will be providing each member with a name tag. The tag pictured to the right is the name tag that will be ordered and provided. If you are an officer of the club that office will also be printed on the badge A new member of the South Texas Chapter Phil Auldridge, is a Hudson owner, but also an involved community supporter. His community spirit has taken root in his support of the ROLLING SCULPTURE CAR SHOW held at BEE CAVE TEXAS. The 2012 edition of the show will occur at the Hill Country Galleria, 10 28-12. Phil has many talents and one of them is INTERNET marketing. As part of his support of this show he asked Russell Chilton to allow a picture of his 52 Hudson Hornet sedan be used on the front page of the show s website. The following is a copy of that picture. Great work Phil and great HUDSON Russell! Check out the show at this link: The Rolling Sculpture Car Show http://www.rollingsculpturecarshow.com/

PAGE 4 VOLUME 2 ISSUE 4 WANTED AND FOR SALE For Sale - 1954 Hudson Hornet with Twin H Power, this second owner 54 Hudson Hornet has 65722 miles and 3- speed transmission with the optional automatic overdrive and was featured in the WTN (Hudson Magazine) last year. It has a very tight, straight body and runs great. It has never been in an accident or high humidity environment. All body prep work has been done and it is ready for final body work and paint. The seats have been professionally reupholstered and seat frame restored to coordinate with the original dark green color of the car. Over $3000 has been invested into completely restoring the seats. The 308 cubic inch motor with Twin-H Power is original to the car and runs very smoothly. At the time, this motor was the highest displacement, most powerful six cylinder in the world. Over $1000 has been invested in terms of parts such as a new fuel pump, master cylinder, brake work, and belts and hoses. Additionally, the bumpers, bumper guards, and headlight rings have been re-chromed and restored to show quality finish. About $3000 has been invested into the chrome. All stainless trim, interior, and exterior accents are included with the car. Price is $7,500. Over $7000 has been invested into this Hudson. More photos of the car are available as well as its interesting story. It would make an excellent restoration project or show car. Please message or call if interested. Thanks!" CHAPTER, REGIONAL and NATIONAL MEET INFORMATION October 28--Austin, TX We will move the date of our October meeting so we can take advantage of meeting outside Austin for the Bee Caves Rolling Sculpture Car Show ( http://www.rollingsculpturecarshow.com/ ).The date change is to support the efforts of our South Texas Chapter member Phil Auldridge who is an organizer. Phil's support to the Bee Caves meet may preclude his ability to participate in our Hudson Club meeting, but it passes a great message to our members that their Hudson family is behind their ventures. We will meet (possibly at Waterloo Icehouse) for lunch and business before heading over to the show, unless our cars are IN the show! November 10-- To Be Determined A combination elections/chapter Holiday party. Option A: Austin: Pending decision from the Auldridges Option B: To Be Determined, if the Auldridges cannot host this meeting, we will look for another option nearer our Houston contingent, possibly Brenham. VOLUME 2 ISSUE 4 PAGE 7 HUDSON TIPS Flushing Hudson Cork Clutches From R.K. Dittrich: Drain out the oil in the clutch put in 1/2 pint of #1 Kerosene run Engine about a minute or two. drain out the sludge and let it drain overnight. If it was real sludged up repeat process then put in 1 can Hudsonite or same amount of Dextron#2 not #3 the kerosene I learned from my father who got it from a Hudson mechanic. This formula worked in our Hudson s from 1947 thru 51 cars then dad bought a 55 with dry clutch. Hudsonite Formula from a former Service Station Manager From Bobby Dec 9 1999 My Dad Had a Chemist at Fort Snelling Analyze Orig. Hudsonite Back in the mid 50's. Dad was in the Service station business and wanted to make it instead of paying the rising price. It can be reproduced by 8parts 20wt. -non detergent oil with 2parts K-1 Kerosene. ATF will work but is high detergent and not as positive a grab, I know, I used to chain down the center bearing in the driveshaft and drag race these monsters. Jet O/D wiring From Dave : I would guess it is same as any stepdown harness, maybe a little shorter. Check with Al Saffrahn, as he may have all you need. Rhode Island has pattern for them, but doesn't supply plugs. I think plug from headlamp will work. If you need to borrow pattern, I have one that I am ready to install in my 49. Overdrive kick down switch-the Jeepsterman, 908-458-3966, part #649790,. Added K Cates: Motors Master wiring diagram Manual indicates the Jet to be the same as the Stepdown wiring diagram. Optimizing your timing to the operating altitude From : Brad Gentner Someone also asked about how I timed my engine w/ a vacuum gauge. First, attach vacuum gauge to a source of manifold vacuum. With engine at operating temperature, idle set to specs. and vacuum advance line disconnected and plugged, advance timing by rotating distributor clockwise. Your vacuum reading should increase. You'll get to a point where further timing advances have no effect on vacuum reading. This is the timing that develops max. Vacuum. Now retard the timing until the gauge reads 1/2 in. Hg. lower than this max. level. Tighten down Distributors hold down, and, voila, this should be the optimal timing for your altitude. Hudson Door & Striker Maintenance Tip came from Press Kale: This may seem so simple but before I learned of this I broke the glass in my door by slamming it.; Make sure striker plate is in proper position and parallel to the door jamb. Put plenty of WD40 on the mechanism in the door. Put some lithium grease on the striker plate. Door should now click close. It does for me. No more broken windows
