PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice has been prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of major industrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing these technical requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, and engineering costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. While this Practice is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users, individual applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and take precedence over this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose and particular matters or application of the Practice to particular project or engineering situations should not be made solely on information contained in these materials. The use of trade names from time to time should not be viewed as an expression of preference but rather recognized as normal usage in the trade. Other brands having the same specifications are equally correct and may be substituted for those named. All Practices or guidelines are intended to be consistent with applicable laws and regulations including OSHA requirements. To the extent these Practices or guidelines should conflict with OSHA or other applicable laws or regulations, such laws or regulations must be followed. Consult an appropriate professional before applying or acting on any material contained in or suggested by the Practice. This Practice is subject to revision at any time. Changes or modifications of any kind are not permitted within any PIP Practice without the express written authorization of PIP. Authorized Users may attach addenda or overlays to clearly indicate modifications or exceptions to specific sections of PIP Practices. Authorized Users may provide their clients, suppliers and contractors with copies of the Practice solely for Authorized Users purposes. These purposes include but are not limited to the procurement process (e.g., as attachments to requests for quotation/ purchase orders or requests for proposals/contracts) and preparation and issue of design engineering deliverables for use on a specific project by Authorized User s client. PIP s copyright notices must be clearly indicated and unequivocally incorporated in documents where an Authorized User desires to provide any third party with copies of the Practice. NOTES: 01 If a pipe schedule is shown under "SCH/RAT," it shall be adequate for the full flange rating. If "CALC" is shown, the pressure limit may be lower than full flange rating. 02 All butt-welded component thicknesses shall match the pipe thickness. 05 Weld thickness of integrally reinforced branch connections shall be checked to determine if PWHT is required. 07 These valves have no flanges but are installed between line flanges with extra-length bolts. 08 Full-port valves shall be used if indicated on the P&ID. 09 Pressure and temperature rating can be limited by certain components permitted by this Practice. Manufacturer's recommended pressure-temperature restrictions shall be consulted. 11 Flat-face flanges shall be provided adjacent to flat-face equipment nozzles. 12 These flanges shall be used only to match Class 300 flange connections at control valves and special equipment. 13 Weld-neck flanges shall be used against butt-weld fittings. Otherwise, slip-on flanges shall be used. 14 Full-face gaskets shall be used at flat-faced flanges. 26 To be used only if indicated on the P&ID. 53 To be used where required for pipe supports, dummy legs and unused socketweld taps. 59 Branch weld shall be used with reinforcement pad if the minimum wall thickness (specified or measured) of the header at the branch location exceeds xxx where xxx equals the wall thickness value for the letter symbol shown in the legend. Full encirclement reinforcement (length equals twice branch pipe OD) shall be used if the wall is less than or equal to xxx. 61 These check valves shall be installed in a horizontal position with cover up. 62 These check valves shall be installed in a horizontal position with cover up or in a vertical position with upward flow. 63 These check valves shall be installed in a horizontal position with hinge pin vertical or in a vertical position with upward flow. 170 These items should be qualified for use in this specification in accordance with ASME B31.3, Paragraph 304.7.2. 173 These flanges shall be used only with Series A flanged connections. 178 Use cap screws for valves or flanges containing tap holes. It is recommended that cap screws be supplied by valve supplier/manufacturer to ensure proper length for all taps.
