If you have an idea let one of the officers or Steve Calder know. President s Column Back Next Month Vice-President s Column In my never-ending quest to work on every other project besides what I should be working on, guess what? I started a new project. This time, it's a long- overdue upgrade to an old favorite. Since the day I bought the wagon, it hasn't had heat. The heater core gave up during the test drive, I bypassed it, and it's been that way ever since. The A/C did work (sort of), but airflow was poor, and the temperature coming out of the vents was tepid at best. I just so happened to have a new in the box Vintage Air system that I purchased for another car, but never installed. First order of business-- start digging out boxes! Getting out the kit was the first part of this job, and a not so easy one. The receipt was still stuck to the side of one of the boxes, and it showed that I bought this system in March of 6

2012! After 5 years of sitting, the kit had been pushed WAY back on the shelf at the back of the shop, under a stack of floorpans and miscellaneous parts. Thankfully, my curiosity hadn't got the best of me when the kit originally arrived, and everything was still factory sealed- minimizing the spider infestation. After laying out and inventorying all of the parts, it was time to get down to business. I started under the hood--where step number one is to remove all of the original components. Off comes the grille, for access to the original condenser. After wrestling that out of it's home, off came the boat anchor of a compressor, with the associated brackets and original lines. With the easy stuff out of the way, it was time to get serious. Passenger front tire came off next, followed by the inner fender for access to the A/C box. The A/C box and wiring harness for it came off fairly easily. I was careful to take my time removing the unit without breaking any of the tabs or damaging any of the components- I have no plans to ever use that setup again, but someone doing a correct restoration may want it. 7

Now that there is a big square hole in the firewall where the big 'ol box was, it was time to focus my efforts on the cabin side of things. For more room to work, I removed the front seats and lowered the steering column. After removing the dash pad, I located all of the bolts holding the lower dash in place, and after disconnecting a few hundred wires, removed the dash as a unit. With clear and open access to the interior heater box, the rest of the original kit came off like a breeze. With everything stripped out of the car, now is a great time to clean up some stereo wiring, tidy things up, and loom / secure some items under the hood. I won't let the snowball grow too big on me here- with the only adds before re-installation of the dash being getting the tach operational and checking the fuel gauge. Now, it's time to start modifying some of the original components to accept the new system, and that's where my journey ends for today. I did, however, mount the new control panel in the dash, and marveled at how smooth the knobs move, since they are all electronic and have no 8

cables or levers to align. Looks good in the dash, I think-- since the car is far from original, I'm willing to give up a little of the factory look for the promise of a working defroster along with a modern heat and A/C system. I'll be sure to keep you posted on my progress-- the plan is to have it done and operational for our trip to Omaha for the regional in a few weeks. Considering it only took my about 5 hours to get to this point, and we have a 3 day weekend coming up, should be no problem. I know, I know - famous last words! Wish me luck!
