Hogs and Pigs: Final estimates for 1988-1992. Agricultural Statistics Board. National Agricultural Statistics Service. U.S. Department of Agriculture. I, Abstract f. This publication presents final hog and pig estimates. mage by the Agricultural Statistics Board for the period 1988-1992 including some revisions and continues the official series published in Statistical Bulletin No. 797 issued December 1989. This series includes annual and quarterly estimates for inventory. sows farrowed. pig crops. number of operations with hogs. value of inventory on December 1. and percentage estimates of inventory and operations by size groups for those years. Estimates contained in this publication provide a historical record and benchmark for current estimates. Introduction Hog and pig estimates were published on a current basis during 1988-92 in quarterly and annual reports. Primary data used in preparing the current hog estimates were obtained from producers using probability surveys. Survey procedures ensured that all hog and pig producers. regardless of size. had a chance to be included in the survey. Large producers were sampled more heavily than small operations. Information was collected by mail. telephone. and faceto-face personal interviews. Since all operations raising hogs are not included in the sample. survey estimates are subject to sampling variability. This variability. as measured by the relative standard error. is about 2 percent at the U.S. level for the hog inventory. This means that chances are approximately 95 out of 0 that a survey estimate will be within percent of the complete coverage value if the same procedures are used to survey all producers. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omissions. duplication. and mistakes in reporting. recording. and processing the data. The effects of these errors cannot be measured directly. They are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and through a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness. Lists of hog producers are updated annually in each State prior to sampling. The Agricultural Statistics Board (ASB) also constructs a U.S. balance sheet for an additional check on inventory estimates. The balance sheet begins with the previous inventory estimate. adds estimates of births and imports. and subtracts estimates of slaughter. exports. and deaths. This indicated ending inventory level is compared to the ASB estimate for reasonableness. Revisions were made only after a thorough review of the original data. with consideration given to all additional data now available. including the 1992 Census of Agriculture. At the national level. revisions of estimates of all hogs and pigs and quarterly pig crops were less than one-half percent. For information call (202)' 720-3. :30 p.m. ET.
