COLLECTING A FORCE FROM DOGS AND DEVILS Dogs & Devils brings Flames Of War players into the slugfest that was Italy. The forces that landed at Anzio together with those hurled against them are available to clash across the valleys and mountains of Italy. Assaulting horrendous defences, cracking a hole in the German lines, and fending off desperate counterattacks will consume your army s efforts. The elite Hermann Göring Fallschirmpanzerdivision is at your disposal to release against the advancing American infantry. Halting the massive firepower and indomitable spirit of the First Special Service Force or 3 rd Division will take the same prowess as displayed by the actual German generals who gave their all in trying to contain the Anzio beachhead. Its time to quit pussyfooting around, unleash the Black and Blue devils on the Wehrmacht. The Black Devils of the FSSF have already accomplished the impossible, earning their name as the Devil s Brigade, now they have the full support that an entire Corps can supply. And the Blue Devils of the 3 rd Division are one of the toughest outfits in the whole US army. Now supported by VI Corps, with their amassed artillery coordinated through the Fire Direction Center and the veteran tankers of the 1 st Armored Division. HOW THIS BATTLE BOOK WORKS The Intelligence Briefings in this book give you the choices of two American and two German companies based on historical examples that fought in Italy during May 1944. HOW TO BUILD A FORCE In Flames Of War games you will command a company with several platoons. Each company includes: Company Headquarters - The company headquarters platoon is required without it you have no command! When you choose your force the first thing you should purchase with your points is your company headquarters. Combat s - At least two combat platoons are usually required, sometimes three. These platoons make up the core of your force. These platoons are the backbone of your force. Weapons s - Weapons platoons come from your own battalion or regiment. Although they are optional they offer your company excellent support, such as heavy machine-guns, mortars and anti-tank weapons. Support s - Support platoons are sent to your company by the division or corps. These platoons give you extra support in many forms, ranging from tanks to artillery.

An Amercian 3 rd Division Rifle Company is one of the toughest Companies in Flames Of War. 3 rd Division Rifle Company ( Company) Reluctant Confident Fearless With an entire army of Veterans, they are hard to hit and take a lot of firepower to stop. As Confident troops they can be trusted to hang around through the thickest of fighting. Assault platoons of pioneers armed with bazookas and flame-throwers deal to armour as effectively as infantry. Conscript Trained Combat s The 3 rd Division Special Rules make the company even more effective. Veteran Medal Of Honor Winners give your platoons a better chance of making it into an assault through withering defensive fire. They allow their platoons to assault despite being Pinned. Sharpshooters allow a platoon to re-roll a vital missed shot or failed firepower test once per turn. They give you the possibility of turning a whole game around. Core Purchases UBX03 Rifle Company US749 Assault platoon NEW 15 th May Price Code N Specific platoons of the 3rd Division were designated assault platoons. They were specially trained in reducing enemy strong points and bunkers using demolitions, bangalore torpedoes, and flame-throwers. Adding 2 infantry platoons to support the Assault gives the American a strong core of troops that benefit from the divisions special rules that will challenge any enemy. Combat s Headquarters Company HQ Company HQ Assault Rifle 15 15 16 Rifle 16 Rifle 16 Recommended Purchases US740 Weapons NEW 10 th April Adding a Weapons is the cheapest, easiest way of increasing your companies firepower. In attack, attach your 60mm mortars to an infantry platoon and use them as grenade launchers. 60mm mortars are able to shoot direct fire over other infantry, increasing the platoons effective numbers. With high firepower mortars are great for taking out dug-in infantry. In defence 60mm mortar teams are great for bombarding advancing infantry. M1919 LMG teams with ROF 5, and ROF 2 while pinned, are useful in suppressing enemy positions or defending your own. Machine-guns Weapons 16

Weapons s Weapons platoons form the core support available to a Rifle Company. Weapons platoons come from your own battalion or regiment. Though optional, they offer your company excellent support. Weapons platoons include heavy machine-guns, mortars and anti-tank weapons. US737 Bazooka teams NEW 10 th April This is an ideal purchase because most US weapons platoons have optional Bazooka teams. The anti-tank 10 and tank assault 4 give Bazooka teams an equally good chance at destroying tanks by shooting or assaulting. Recommended Purchase US704 Machine-gun With ROF 6 M1917 HMG teams are ideal for defending objectives. With a 24 /60cm range (longer range than Rifle, Rifle/MG, MG, and M1919 LMG teams) the Machine-gun platoon can devastate attacking infantry before they shoot back. Integrate M1917 machine-guns in the defensive line to almost guarantee the position will never get over-run. Weapons s Machine-guns Machine-gun Machine-guns Machine-gun 17 17 US705 Mortar A mortar platoon with 81mm mortars gives a Rifle Company a cheap smoke bombardment, freeing the larger artillery up to use explosive rounds. Mortar 17 US501 M1 57mm gun (x2) At Anti-tank 10, ROF 3, 57mm anti-tank guns are very effective in dealing with any medium tank. They are the mainstay of a good anti-tank defence. Anti-tank Anti-tank 18 US749 Assault platoon NEW 15 th May The Ammunition & Pioneer platoon gives the Rifle Company access to a Pioneer Supply truck, making it easy for troops to dig-in, should the battle turn defensive Ammunition & Pioneer 18 US501 M1 57mm gun (x2) Adding a second Anti-tank platoon to your US Rifle Company gives it the punch needed to ruin the enemy s armour attack. The Devil s Brigade Special Service Force ( Company) The Special Service Force (SSF) was an elite joint US & Canadian force, and is the hardest hitting assault force currently in the game. Reluctant Confident Fearless These Fearless troops will do everything you want them to do, continuing on when other troops would quiver, break and flee. As Trained troops, your casualties will be higher while closing with the enemy if you are not cautious. However, once in contact, their Special Rules will leave no survivors. The I Shall Never Fail My Comrades rule makes it very difficult to break an SSF company. Conscript Trained Veteran Cautious Movement makes the SSF infantry harder to hit while moving through difficult terrain. Assault Troops means your troops won t stay Pinned down for long. Woodsmen allows the platoon to keep moving even if anything unfortunate happens to your command team. Death, Destruction and Mayhem makes the SSF infantry hit better than veteran infantry in assaults, and be as effective as Pioneers in assaulting tanks. Combat s Core Purchases UBX19 The Devils Brigade NEW 15 th May US748 Devils Brigade NEW 15 th May Price Code L The SSF is a small hard hitting force capable of making surgical strikes into the enemy front lines. One team per platoon can be replaced with a flame-thrower team, and you can choose to deploy 60mm mortars or 80mm mortars depending on the mission. Taking maximum Combat and Weapons platoons makes the SSF a lot harder to break, thanks to the I Shall Never Fail My Comrades Special Rule. Combat Companies Headquarters Headquarters Company HQ SSF 25 25 SSF 25 SSF 25

Weapons s The I Shall Never fail My Comrade Special rule makes the weapons platoons in the SSF important to the companies morale as well as being their main source of support. The I Shall Never fail My Comrades Special rule also means that Divisional support platoons do not count for purposes of Company Morale. Even if all of the Divisional support platoons are destroyed, the company is fine for Morale purposes. US101 M3 75mm GMC The SSF Cannon platoon is a duel purpose platoon. It is a cheap form of mobile Anti-tank, with ROF 2 at Anti-tank 9, it will scare most medium tanks and all enemy transports. These vehicles also carry 81mm mortars. So if there are no viable targets for the main gun, and the platoon did not move, they may choose to fire as 81mm mortar teams in bombardment or for Smoke, Weapons SSF Cannon 463 rd Parachute Battery 26 26 US573 Para M2A1 105mm Howitzer (x2) NEW 26 th June The 463 rd Parachute battery was formed on Anzio Beach on 20 February 1944. It consisted of the headquarters and personnel of A and B batteries of the 456 th Parachute of the 82 nd Airborne Division. The 463 rd Parachute Battery received their 105mm howitzer guns from the 45 th Division and supported the First Special Service Force throughout Italy. The Parachute is Fearless Veteran, so are hard to hit and hard to break.

US Divisional Support The support options available to the 3 rd and SSF makes these tough infantry companies even tougher. Reluctant Confident Fearless For the first time, American companies have access to the Fire Direction Center (FDC) which allows you to add artillery batteries together to build Coordinated Bombardments. This can be combined with Air Support to create a Strategic Bombardment at the beginning of the Game. The FDC also allows units that can not normally fire as artillery to join in Bombardments. The amount of artilley benefiting American players is almost unlimited. Light 105 s, 105 s, 155 s, T-19 s, Priests, Chemical mortars, Sherman 105 s and mortars Conscript Trained Veteran are available. Even M-10 s, in larger quantities, and towed 3 guns can fire as artillery with the FDC. US Companies also get access to the new 90mm anti-aircraft gun, equivalent to the German 88, which can fire as anti-air, anti-tank or artillery. Together with the large amounts of artillery, American players get access to all of the usual suspects. Sherman tanks, Stuart tanks, Armoured, rangers, paratroopers, engineers, reconnaissance and aircraft are all available for the battle. Multiple Divisional Support options allow American players to create widely diverse lists that are as effective in attack as they are on defence. Hermann Göring Panzerdivision has a reputation almost as tough as the SS or Fallschirmjäger. Containing three companies of Veterans, they hit hard while quickly halting determined Allied assaults. As both Confident and Elite Troops, the HG Division re-rolls failed platoon morale checks. This ensures they hang around through the toughest melees. Hermann Göring panzers have the Stacheldraht Special rule. It allows one panzer per platoon to upgrade, allowing it to act as a Pioneer truck and deploy barbed wire. German Forces HErMANn Göring (HG) Reluctant Confident Fearless A Grenadierkompanie from the 362. or 715. Infanteriedivision contain a core of Confident Veteran soldiers with a supporting platoon of Confident Trained or Fearless Fearless Trained Panzergrenadiers. This makes it more mobile than a standard grenadier force. 362. & 715. Grenadierkompanie Reluctant Confident HG Panzergrenadiers also get a Special Conscript rule called Motorised Movement. This Trained rule gives HG teams, while Veteran mounted in their trucks, a Skill check as a save (usually 3+) instead of a normal +5 Passenger save if their transport is destroyed by firepower 5+ and 6 weapon. (bazookas, machine-guns and light AA weapons etc.) This gives them greater freedom to drive around the table. A Hermann Göring Company can either be a Panzerkompanie, Panzergrenadierkompanie, or schwere Aufklärungsschwadron. Conscript Trained Veteran Divisional Support The cheaper infantry platoons mean that the Grenadierkompanie is able to take advantage of the large number of weapons and support platoons available Divisional Support in this book comes from both the Herman Göring Panzerdivision (HG) which benefit from all the HG special rules and the LXXII Panzerkorps (Heer). Each set of divisional support has a mix of different weapons. During the campaign in Italy, divisional support was pooled together into the Panzerkorps and allocated as needed. To represent this, all three HG companies and the grenadier companies have a mix of support options. This allows the Grenadiers to be backed up by the elite HG Division, or allows the HG Player to customise and shave off points here and there with slightly less motivated troops. The Divisional Support under the Panzerkorps allows outstanding heavy support to include Tigers, Panthers, Elefants, Hornisse, Brumbärs, StuGs with Borgwards and both 105mm & 150mm artillery. New options include Semovente 75/34 s (from Midwar Monsters) and Semovente 105/25 assault guns, that were captured and pressed into German service from the surrendering Italians. Another unique feature for the HG forces is the ability to take THREE 88 platoons while a warrior for the Grenadier Companies protects their artillery from wandering Jabos and their AoPs.

Hermann Göring Panzerkompanie Hermann Göring Armoured Company (Tank Company) A Panzerkompanie from the Hermann Göring Panzerdivision contains late model Panzer III M & N tanks, along with Panzer IV H tanks. Fully capable of holding their own against the M4 Sherman tanks, an HG Panzer platoon s lower points allows you to beef up the available heavy armour support from the Panzerkorps. This means that the combat platoons, while relatively cheap, can hasten the arrival of Tigers, Panthers and Elefants. 362. & 715. Infanterie Division Grenadierkompanie Company ( Company) Both 362. Infanteriedivision and 715. Infanteriedivision were reconstituted from rehabilitated veterans of Stalingrad. Though earmarked to return to Russia, they were re-equipped and fully manned with additional replacements in France when sent to Italy for the Allied landing at Anzio. Attached to the LXXVI Panzerkorps, both the 362 th and the 715 th Divisions were augmented with an additional motorised Panzergrenadier regiment from either the 1028. Panzergrenadierregiment, 35. SS-Panzgrenadierregiment, or 36. SS-Panzergrenadierregiment when fighting on the Anzio beachhead. In addition, the 69. Panzerregiment supported both divisions whether they were attacking or defending. This support provided a large and varied mix of motorised and armour support to a normal German infantry division. Hermann Göring & LXXII Panzerkorps Divisional Support Herman Göring and Heer Companies can take support platoons from each others support pool. Hermann Göring Divisional Support The Herman Göring Division was given preferential treatment when getting supplies and equipment, meaning they always had the best that the German war machine could offer. The FlaK Regiment Hermann Göring was the original Hermann Göring unit. It evolved from being the anti-aircraft unit guarding Hitler s personal train to two full battalions in Italy. This gives Hermann Göring Panzerdivision units access to more frontline air defence than any other division. LXXVI Panzerkorps The LXXVI Panzerkorps was one of the first units assigned to the German Tenth Army for the defence of Italy. The Korps fought against the Allied landings at Salerno and established the Bernhardt Line. Made up of the 16. Panzerdivision, 1. Fallschirmjägerdivision, 26. Panzerdivision, and 90. Panzergrenadierdivision, the LXXVI Panzerkorps contained the best German divisions in Italy. It housed the incoming reserve battalions in support of the German defence at Anzio and assigned them as individual support units to the German divisions fighting in the field.
