Plugs, socket-outlets and couplers for industrial purposes 1 Scope 1.1 This standard specifies requirements for plugs, socket-outlets, cable couplers and appliance couplers, intended for use in industry (either indoors or outdoors), in agriculture, and on board ship, with single-phase and three-phase supplies, at a d.c. operating voltage or an a.c. r.m.s. operating voltage not exceeding 690 V, a frequency not exceeding 500 Hz and a rated current not exceeding 250 A. The accessories are intended for continuous use at an ambient temperature that does not normally exceed 40 C. 1.2 This standard also covers appliance sockets (inlets) incorporated in, or fixed to, electrical appliances or electrical equipment and accessories for use in extra-low-voltage industrial installations. 1.3 This standard does not cover accessories for applications that involve explosion hazards or in which flameproof equipment is required. NOTE Where the ambient temperature is likely to exceed 40 C, accessories might have to be de-rated so that the maximum permissible temperature of 85 C is not exceeded. 2 Normative references This part of SANS 1239 contains provisions, which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part of SANS 1239.
