Report From PPCC President Patricia Fox The RMC picnic appeared to be a huge success and the weather cooperated. A Big Thank you to the cook, John Dawson. What a great opportunity for members of two clubs to meet and visit. There were faces we haven t seen in awhile. It was fun to catch up with all of them again. Did you see the cookie burger? Ask Garrie for his recipe. Wayne & Bonni Russert invited everyone to see their unique Home and Garage Tour immediately after the picnic. Wow! The view! The toys! The years of memories! Thank you for sharing with us. I know members who found Wayne s garage organizing ability amazing and they came away with some great ideas. Love the tool cart! Randy Karl handed out flyers for the Fall Tour in Alma, CO. It is an equal distance for most of the members and the timing should be great for Fall colors. Thank you Randy for finding a special place for us to meet up again. The flyer is on the PPCC website & we will have copies at the next meeting. Paul Campbell has a new project! We are hoping to see it soon. It appears we have decided to have the annual Christmas party at the Golden Corral on 12.16.12 @ 4:00p.m. in lieu of our Sunday a.m. meeting. A gift exchange as usual marked as man, woman or either. Another reminder will be in future Driplines. Thank you Paul for our monthly Dripline-keep him in mind should you have a Corvair event, story, photo or anything funny to post. Follow us on Facebook too! (PikesPeakCorvairClub) We post future events, common interest stories or whatever is interesting at the moment. The PPCC September meeting will be at the Golden Corral, Woodmen Ave. 3rd Sunday, 9.16.12 @ 9a.m. Darren make a note! A Shocking Alternative Last month, after assessment, I determined that the '61 Rampside would benefit from new front shock absorbers. Having on hand all of the GM green and white shop manuals for the "How To" directions and the 30 P&A from 1974, I found that the part number listed no longer crossed to any current shock absorbers. It was time to consult my well used CORSA tech guide. Within the guide, I found a tip on FC shocks by Ken Hand which was part of the 1996 update. It stated that Dodge truck D 100 and D 150 shocks fit both FC and EM Corvair cars. It seemed that a double check might be in order and I placed a call to Steve Goodman. While speaking with Steve, he recalled the very tech tip that I was looking at. That firmed up the parts search! On line shopping found the best local price and I called the Colorado Springs retail store. In about an hour, I was back to the garage with two new shocks. Improvement in ride and handling was immediately obvious. If you decide to take on the shock absorber project on a FC or Early Model Corvair, you will find that it is not difficult and the parts are not expensive. The DRIPLINE Another New Corvair As you can see from the pictures on the left page, I m taking on another Corvair project. This one is going to require a lot more work and renovation by far than the 1962 car I bought from Leroy Rogers 7 years ago. Some of you may remember I sold that one because my left leg stopped cooperating when I tried to use the clutch. I wasn t at all sure I was even going to get another Corvair, but Garrie Fox started sending me ads that he found all around the world because he believes Corvair people should always be Corvair people. Thanks, Garrie, I think!? I bought this one without a title and I ve had it with the mechanic a month just getting new steering gear installed (thanks, Wayne) and the gas tank boiled and renovated. I plan to take it in for a required VIN verification if I can get it to run long enough to get to the state patrol office. I think it s got good bones. It s a 1963 4 door Monza with automatic and the performance 102 hp Super Turbo Air engine (whatever than means) Stay tuned.i ll let you know as I make significant progress. One thing I already know for sure: I m 7 years older than the last Corvair I bought and my body really doesn t like me climbing around cars any more so I m pretty limited as to the amount of time I can spend on the car at any one time.. Thanks John Koll for hauling the car to the mechanic. Thanks Wayne Russert for providing the steering gear. Original was bent. Thanks Garrie Fox for the steering wheel, rear grill, coil and hours of professional help and advice. I ll discuss the incredible support I ve received from members next month.
