GROTNES ROTARY ROLL FORMING MACHINE TOOLS 2 1965 GROTNES MACHINE WORKS, INC.
The forming rolls (tooling) are mounted on parallel spindles powered by a hydrostatic drive. In general the upper spindle (A) is a fixed member, while the lower spindle (B) is adjustable and elevates into position, transmitting the applied force (C). The hydrostatic spindle drive provides ideal torque distribution between the spindles. A hydraulic differential provides equal peripheral speed of the rolls, regardless of difference in diameter, size and shape of the part, through the entire rolling cycle. Infinite variable infeed control of the lower spindle and precise control over applied forces permits forming to close tolerances. The forming operation is accomplished through a combination of die rotation (forming rolls) and the upward feed of the lower spindle. GROTNES MODEL 400
There are numerous engineering advances built into Grotnes rotary roll forming machines. Use of hydrostatic drives eliminated open gearing which had limited the diameter of the rolling spindle between the bearing mounts. The Grotnes method (Figure 1) allowed the diameter of the spindles to be increased and greatly reduce the deflection between rolls, resulting in control of quality in the finished product. Maximum spindle diameter between bearings to reduce deflection between rolls to absolute minimum Bearings spaced to balance load and provide maximum life I \ FIGURE 1. Trunion mount for tilting spindle To elevate and lower the lower spindle in a program sequence, Grotnes engineers designed a combination torque tube and toggle link system (Figure 2). This system is far superior, since it permits the reactive rolling forces to be absorbed within the torque tube, eliminating points of wear which could cause loss of tolerance and rigidity after sustained usage. It also provided the mechanical support required by the lower spindle at each point in the rolling cycle to sustain maximum rolling forces throughout the rolling cycle. AUTOMATED LOADING AND UNLOADING By designing the part handling equipment to be integrated with Grotnes rotary roll forming machine tools, it is possible to load and unload the machine in 1 to 3 ~ sees. depending on the piece part. For example, auto rim blanks can be loaded and unloaded in 1.05 seconds. The rolling cycle is 1.95 seconds. As a result, the production cycle is at a rate of 1200 per hour. Similar results can be achieved on other types of parts. The automated feeder (Figure 3) employs an elevator to position the ~oiled blank above the cradle. When the cradle retracts from the machine, it mechanically releases the part in the elevator while dropping the part that has been rolled into an out chute below. The elevating mechanism is hinged at its base and swings out to provide immmediate accessibility to the spindles for tool (rolling dies) changeover. Ruggedly constructed, the automatic loader and unloader is powered by the machine's hydraulic system, since it operates during the "dwell" period of the machine's rolling cycle.
