Installation & User Instructions 16/25A Digital Dimmer (416/425) INTRODUCTION The 416 and 425 are Digital Dimmers capable of dimming a single channel with total loads of up to 16A and 25A respectively. They are suitable for controlling a variety of light sources, including Incandescent Lamps, Halogen Lamps, 26 or 38mm Fluorescent Tubes or Cold Cathode Tubes. The dimmers are controlled by a digital signal, using the DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) protocol. For larger loads, it is simple to connect additional 416 and 425 dimmers using the same digital signal such that they operate together as one channel. 416 DIGITAL 16A DIMMER 230V-50/60Hz The unit is designed to work with any DALI compatible controller, this requirement is fully met by Helvar s DIGIDIM range of modular panel controllers. Theses products include: DIGIDIM push button range: 121, 2-button on/off; 122, 2-button modifier; 124, 5-button; 125, 5-button & modifier; 126-8 button; 170, IR receiver DIGIDIM sliders: 110, single slider; 111, double slider DIGIDIM 100, rotary The Helvar DIGIDIM modular panel range is available in several finishes, including satin white plastic, lacquered polished brass, and satin stainless steel. All the panels include IR receivers and can be used with an optional DIGIDIM IR remote controller handset. In addition, the 416 and 425 Dimmers are suitable for control by building management systems by either using the Helvar DIGIDIM LON-DALI Gateway product or the Helvar DIGIDIM Input Unit via remote relay control. PHYSICAL INSTALLATION Choosing a Suitable Location The 416 and 425 Digital Dimmers are designed to be mounted vertically. This criterion is especially important for the 425. The chosen mounting surface must be flat and the location must meet the following requirements: A clearance of at least 50mm on all sides is needed to allow for adequate ventilation. Under no circumstances must the grilles on the front panel be obstructed. These criteria are especially important for the 425 Sufficient clearance must be left above and below the unit to allow for the connection of cables, conduits or trunking and the operation of the DIGIDIM physical selection switch The ambient temperature must be within the range 0 C to 35 C, the area must be adequately ventilated Humidity must be within the range of 0 to 90% (non-condensing). DO NOT install this product in a damp location. Mounting is achieved by using the four keyhole fixing holes on the side flanges (see Figure 2). The fixing screws (not supplied) must be: Thread Ø <6mm (Smaller than the long slot of the fixing hole, see Figure 2) Head Ø <9mm (Large enough to clamp the flange securely) Mounting Procedure 1. Mark and drill four holes corresponding with the centre of the fixing holes. Note the 7mm drop-down clearance 2. Insert the screws and screw them in. Allow clearance for the thickness of the mounting flange 3. Align the centre of the flange fixing holes with the screws and mount the unit. Allow the slotted part of the holes to drop-down behind the screw heads (see Figure 3). If necessary, loosen the screws to ease this operation. 4. Tighten all four screws sufficiently to prevent the unit from being lifted away. Mounting flange 200mm Mounting screw < 9mm < 6mm PHYSICAL SELECTION SWITCH 185mm Drop height 7mm 416 Figure 3. ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION Cable Access There are various knock-outs on the unit, as shown in Figure 2. These are located on one end panel, being suitable for 16mm, 20mm, and 25mm conduit fixings, or on the rear panel, where the gap created between the back of the dimmer case and the wall may be used for cable entry. All mains input, output and DALI cables must enter the dimmer case via the provided access points using the rubber grommet provided. THE MAINS INPUT PROTECTIVE COVER (EARTH) MUST BE CONNECTED. Mains Supply Protection The mains input supply must be externally protected by an MCB or fuse of a suitable rating for the load circuit (maximum 16A for 416 or 25A for 425). It is recommended that this protection is local to the dimmer and clearly identified. It is recommended that the lamp loading of the transformer is no more than 80% of the nominal transformer power (unless otherwise specified by the transformer manufacturer). For example, a 500 VA transformer should not be loaded to more than 400W. In addition, the transformer must be capable of enduring short-circuit resistance or be equipped with thermal protection on the primary side. The thermal protection must be of non-resettable type or manually resettable only. The rating applies to soft start with no switches in the dimmed phase circuit. If direct start is used or if switches are in the dimmed phase circuit, the transformer rating must be reduced by 40%. The earth leakage current of an electronic ballast is about 0.5mA. Due to harmonic currents, this can rise to 5.0mA/ ballast when dimmed. This has to be taken into account in those installations where used. For example, not more than six ballasts can be connected to one 30mA R.C.D. MAINS SUPPLY INPUT Figure 4. CONTROL CONNECTIONS Physical Selection Switch A push button switch is located on the top end panel of the unit (see Figure 2 ). This is the physical selection switch and is only used when programming multi-channel systems. In a typical single channel installations the unit has been designed for out-of-box operation and the physical selection switch can be ignored. DALI Connections WARNING DALI CONNECTIONS CARRY BASIC INSULATION RATING ONLY AND MUST BE TREATED AS A LIVE CONNECTION. DIMMER CONTROLS CAUTION Before connecting or changing a Helvar Electrosonic FD ballast load, ensure that the Minimum Level Adjustment Control (MIN) is set to maximum and the Maximum Level Adjustment Control (MAX) is set to minimum (refer to Figure 5 ). To increase the MAX setting, measure the RMS voltage to the ballast and increase slowly until reaching the ballast specification. DO NOT OVER-VOLT THE BALLAST. To decrease the MIN setting, reduce slowly, allowing the lamps to stabilise, until the minimum stable lamp level is reached. DO NOT SET BELOW THE MINIMUM LIGHT SPECIFICATION OF THE BALLAST. DO NOT ALLOW LAMPS TO EXTINGUISH. Refer to the wiring diagrams shown in Figure 7.Toensure correct and reliable operation, be sure to observe the following points: Only use the specified cable type Do not exceed the maximum recommended cable length Avoid running control cables through electrically noisy environments, such as near other dimmer units. Cable Type: Max. Cable Length: DALI Power Supply Screened, multi-stranded, twisted pair 0.5 to 1.5mm 2 300m The unit incorporates a DALI power supply. This can supply up to 240mA, which is the maximum allowed by the standard in a DALI system. The power supply can be switched OFF by internal switches on the interface board (see Figure 7 ). The factory default is ON. NOTE The level adjustment controls can only be accessed when the cover is removed (see Figure 7 for their location). The maximum level can be adjusted within the range 72% to 98% of supply input. To match the DALI recommended response (see Figure 10), set the Maximum Level Adjustment (MAX) to maximum (fully clockwise) and the Minimum Level Adjustment (MIN) a quarter-turn clockwise as shown in Figure 5.
