SafeStart hand held SafeStart Initiators (SI-1) function The hand held SafeStart Initiators (SI-1) is designed to fire a SafeStart instantaneous detonator from a distance of up to 1km away using standard blasting wire or cable. It is primarily used for secondary blasting. description The unit is a functional replacement for conventional shot exploders and is fully approved by the SABS in accordance with SANS 1717-2, Inspection Authority (IA) certificate number SABS M 109-287X. The hand held SafeStart Initiators (SI-1) consists of five main components: 1. A toughened plastic enclosure /casing that is fully water resistant. 2. Key and key switch. 3. An indicator LED, which glows to show correct operation. 4. A replaceable PP3-9V alkaline battery, capable of at least 1500 firing cycles. 5. Red lead attachments. 6. Carry strap and pouch.
advantages safety SafeStart Instantaneous Electronic Detonators are free from electrical and environmental hazards commonly found in mining applications. Furthermore the SafeStart Instantaneous Electronic Detonator is safe against unauthorized use connecting the detonator to miner cap lamps or external voltage sources does not result in firing. Warning: Although certified to be safe, NEVER connect the SafeStart Instantaneous Electronic Detonators to any energy source other than the SafeBlast Centralised Blasting System (CBS) or the hand held SafeStart Initiators (SI-1). Failure to do so may result in injury, death or prosecution. A replaceable PP3-9V alkaline battery, capable of at least 1500 firing cycles, is used to provide power to the unit. accuracy Hand held SafeStart Initiators (SI-1) are designed for millisecond response times allowing for improved accuracy and precision. cost effective The hand held SafeStart Initiators (SI-1) should be returned for servicing as per SANS 01325-2:2001 resulting in extended use and an extended life span. simplicity/flexibility Operated by key switch, an indicator light glows to show correct operation. 2
product information Nominal Firing Voltage 160-300 VDC. Short Circuit Current Limit 40mA maximum (measured). Firing Mechanism Spring Loaded Key Switch. Operating Time 1.9-2.5 seconds. Firing Indicator LED indicator glows during operation. Firing Capacity Fires one SafeStart detonator from a distance of up to1km away. Battery Type Replaceable PP3-9V Alkaline Battery. Life More than 1500 cycles. Unit Dimensions 120mm x 82mm x 40mm Unit Mass 0.55kg Temperature Range -5 C to 45 C applications The hand held SafeStart Initiators (SI-1) has the following use: Secondary blasting. Note: Not approved for use in fiery mines. primer assemblies Figure One The placement of guards and barricades must be done in accordance with mine rules and standards. Permissions and warnings for an impending blast must be done in accordance with mine rules and standards. Once all the safety considerations have been taken into account, the face is charged up and connected. Connect the SafeStart Instantaneous Electronic Detonator unit to the blasting wires and ensure that no shorting or shunting of wires occurs. If an EZ Platinum Trunkline / EZ Trunkline is being used as a starter unit for the blast, clip the SafeStart Instantaneous Electronic Detonator unit onto the EZ Platinum Trunkline / EZ Trunkline (Figure One). If the face is to be initiated directly by the SafeStart Instantaneous Electronic Detonator, clip the SafeStart electronic starter detonator onto the shocktube of the first hole. 3
important instructions Please note the following: Only authorized personnel may operate a SafeStart Initiators (SI-1) i.e. personnel in possession of a valid blasting certificate. Follow the brief operating instructions, stated on the front panel of the SafeStart Initiators (SI-1). Equipment may not be used if it appears to be faulty, tampered with or otherwise physically damaged. The mine must adhere to SANS 01325-2:2001 and IA certificate SABS M/09-287X regarding maintenance of the SafeStart Initiators (SI-1). The SafeStart Initiators (SI - 1) key should be separated from the unit at all times, unless intending to fire. Excessive vibration and shock should be avoided during transport and storage. All blasting circuits should be checked. Use of an ohmmeter and earth leakage tester is strongly recommended. The SafeStart Instantaneous Electronic Detonator should be stored securely, preferably locked away with only authorized access. To ensure maximum life capacity, a storage temperature range of 10 C to 50 C is recommended. Short duration temperature excursions of up to 85 C are however permitted. Ensure that all downlines and outgoing trunkline leads are securely clipped. SafeStart Instantaneous Electronic Detonator is designed to initiate shock tube only and should not be used to initiate detonating cord as this may result in a misfire. Never trim, tamper with or disassemble the SafeStart Instantaneous Electronic Detonator since the entrance of moisture and/or dirt may cause misfires. Never attempt to disassemble the delay cap or use the cap without the block. The surface connectors contain blasting caps and are subject to detonation caused by abuse such as impact, as with all detonators. The connector block accommodates ONE shocktube. Never attach the primary Initiators (SafeStart Instantaneous Electronic Detonator) to the blast until the blast is completely hooked up and the blasting area cleared. Always store detonators and explosives separately. Keep explosives and accessories away from sparks, flames or any other sources of ignition. Excessive temperatures may result in spontaneous ignition of explosives and accessories. Store explosives accessories according to the country rules & regulations. For best results, refer to the manufacturer s operating instructions for hook up (Module 3 Operating the NSS and connecting SafeStart Instantaneous Electronic Detonator). Do not remove the leg wires from the block simply clip the shock tube into the cavity with the wire. 4
