COBB 3362 West 1820 South Salt Lake City, UT 84104 USA (801) 713-0035 2008 WRX Sports Springs Congratulations on your purchase of the COBB Sports Springs. The following instructions should assist you through your installation process. Please read them first before beginning the install. If you feel that you can not properly perform this installation, we HIGHLY recommend you take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic. Pre-Installation Preparation 1. While the car is still on the ground it is a good idea to break the lug nuts loose using a 19mm socket (stock lug nuts) and breaker bar. 2. With the car on a lift, or supported by 4 jack stands remove all 4 wheels. Front Suspension Removal 1. Before removing any part of the factory suspension we recommend marking the camber bolts before removal in order to return the car close to the same camber settings when reinstalling the COBB springs. Mark the top bolt on the bolt head side (not the nut), and its relation on the strut as shown. We still recommend taking the car to an alignment specialist after the install is completed to assure that your car is within the proper specifications. 2. Using a 12mm socket, remove the two bolts that hold the brake line and the ABS sensor wire to the strut.
3. Using a 19mm socket on a breaker bar and a 19mm open end wrench remove the two bolts that attach the strut to the hub. 4. Remove the three nuts that attach the strut top to to the chassis using a 12mm socket. Make sure to support the strut when removing the last nut as it will drop out. At this point the strut may be completely removed from the car, repeat these steps on the other side of the car. 5. With the strut out of the car it is now time to mark the relation of the upper spring perch to the lower spring perch and the end of the spring coil on the spring perch as shown. If it is not reinstalled in the same relation the upper spring perch may contact the chassis while turning.
6. Using a flat head screwdriver remove the rubber cover in the center of the top hat to access the 17mm nut. 7. Place the strut in a spring compressor or similar device and compress the spring until it relieves the tension on the upper spring perch. While compressed, remove the 17mm nut in the center of the top hat. If you do not have high speed air tools it may be necessary to use a 6mm allen head wrench inserted into the top of the strut shaft to keep it from spinning while you use a 17mm boxed end wrench on the nut. When removing the factory spring pay attention to how every thing comes apart so you know exactly how to reassemble everything. It may help to completely disassemble and reassemble one side at a time so that you have the other side for reference.
8. With the factory spring removed, you may now remove the bump stop which sits on the strut shaft underneath the shock boot. Using a hacksaw or razor blade, trim the very bottom section from the bump stop as shown and reinstall. Please take care not to injure yourself or someone else. Installation of COBB Sports Springs 9. Place the strut back in the spring compressor and install the COBB spring in the same orientation as the factory spring. Reinstall the upper spring perch, washer and top hat and torque the 17mm nut to 41 ft-lb. 10. Reinstall the strut in the chassis and torque the three 12mm nuts on the top hat to 15 ft-lb. 11. Reinstall the two 19mm bottom bolts and torque them to 129 ft-lb. 12. Reinstall the ABS wire and brake line bolts and torque them to 24 ft-lb.
Rear Suspension Removal 1. Start by opening the trunk and pulling out the carpet and removing the two small plastic panels to access the two 14mm nuts that hold the shock top in place. Using a 14mm socket, remove the two 14mm nuts. 2. Now move underneath the car and using a 17mm socket and 17mm open end wrench remove the bolt that holds the shock to the lower control arm. Also remove the 17mm bolt that holds the lower control arm to the hub.
3. Disconnect the sway bar end link from the sway bar by using a 14mm open end wrench and a 5mm hex wrench to keep the shaft from spinning. You may also need to slightly loosen the 14mm nut and bolt that holds the end link in the lower control arm in order to get the end link out of the sway bar. 4. You should now be able to pull down on the lower control arm and pull the shock up and out.
5. With the rear shock out of the car mark the upper spring perch in relation to the lower spring perch so that it may be positioned properly when reinstalling. 6. Place the shock in a spring compressor or similar device and compress the spring until it relieves the tension on the upper spring perch. While compressed, remove the 14mm nut in the center of the top hat.
7. With the factory spring removed, you may now remove the bump stop which sits on the strut shaft underneath the shock boot. Using a hacksaw or large shears, trim the very bottom section from the bump stop as shown and reinstall. Installation of COBB Sports Springs (Rear) 1. Place the shock back in the spring compressor and install the COBB spring in the same orientation as the factory spring. Reinstall the upper spring perch, washer and top hat and torque the 14mm nut to 43 ft-lb. 2. Reinstall the shock in the chassis by first loosely installing the 17mm bolt that holds the shock in the lower control arm. 3. Push the control arm up making sure the top hat studs go up in the holes and install the 17mm bolt that holds the lower control arm to the hub. 4. With all bolts loosely installed the wheels need to be reinstalled and torqued and the car needs to be lowered in order to properly torque the remaining bolts. 5. Tighten the 17mm bolt that holds the lower control arm to the hub to 116 Ft-lb. 6. Tighten the 17mm bolt that holds the shock to the lower control arm to 116 Ft-lb. 7. Tighten the 14mm bolt that holds the sway bar end link to the lower control arm to 34 Ft-lb. 8. Reinstall the end link in the sway bar and tighten the 14 mm nut to 34 ft-lb. 9. Finally tighten the two upper 14mm nuts to 22 Ft-lb. 10. Reinstall the interior trim pieces and carpet. 11. Enjoy!
Also Recommended To compliment your COBB Sports Springs please consider the forthcoming COBB Sway Bar Package. Testing shows that although both provide a handling improvement separately, that they work much better as an engineered total suspension package.
