What is SCR? Selective Catalytic Reduction, is a catalytic technology to reduce NOx emissions in exhaust gasses. Standard technology used in Stationary and Automotive sector NOx is removed over an SCR catalyst installed in a reactor when a reducing agent (ammonia NH3) is added. The result is harmless nitrogen and water. flow NOx + NH 3 SCR reaction: + 0.5 O 2 N 2 + 1.5 H 2 O MAN Diesel & Turbo Ioannis Author Gekas Korean Shipyard Current Seminar topic 21.08.2017 00.00.2012 < 18 < > 18 >

Other reactions in the SCR system For most SCR application, urea solution is used as reducing agent. Marine AUS40. Urea is converted to ammonia in the exhaust gas CO(NH 2 ) 2 + H 2 O --> CO 2 + 2NH 3 Consumption of urea is related to how much NOx is to be removed. CEAS report for SCR engine indicates urea consumption AmmoniumBiSulphate, ABS is an undesired sticky product that can be formed when ammonia and sulphur are present at low temperatures. NH 3 + SO 3 + H 2 O <=> NH 4 HSO 4 (s) Solution: Sufficient temperature is kept on the SCR reactor Ammonia slip is minimised by proper SCR design and correct dosing MAN Diesel & Turbo Ioannis Author Gekas Korean Shipyard Current Seminar topic 21.08.2017 00.00.2012 < 19 < > 19 >

MDT position on bypass of Exhaust gas economizer For SCR system operating on <0.1% S fuel, there is little risk for deposits on the economizer. For SCR system operating on high Sulphur fuel, there is a higher risk to form deposits on economizer that are hard to remove. For such system therefore, MDT recommends installation of economizer safety bypass. In general: For both Tier II and Tier III engines, MDT believes that a safety bypass of the exhaust gas boiler to secure unrestricted passage of exhaust gas from the main engine is a suitable countermeasure that can be used in case of exhaust gas boiler failure or boiler/economizer clogging. EGR Basic EGR principle Basic principle Exhaust Gas Recirculation Exhaust gas is recirculated to the scavenge air receiver. Lower O 2 content (replaced by CO 2 ) Higher heat capacity of scavenge air Reduces peak temperature of the combustion and formation of NO x Recirculated exhaust gas is cooled and cleaned in the EGR system. The recirculation ratio is controlled based on measured O 2 content in the scavenge air. MAN Diesel & Turbo Author Current topic 00.00.2012 < 54 >

Service experience summary: Data +4400hours of operation on high sulphur fuels have not shown any impact on cylinder condition that cannot be controlled by correct cylinder lubrication. Key EGR components, such as Oxygen sensors, EGR blower and EGR cooler have all proved their durability in service on high sulphur EGR on our long running EGR test platform the Maersk Cardiff. Control of the EGR system is integrated in our well known Engine Control System, and has been continuously developed based on operational data for a simple user experience. Foam in EGR unit During EGR running a mixing of gas and water is lead to Receiving Tank. Foam is generated in Receiving Tank and the foam is lifted through the venting pipe to dry side of EGR unit. The wet foam triggers the level switches (which is installed for detection of water). Solution move venting pipe to wet side of EGR-WMC. MAN Diesel & Turbo Author Current topic 00.00.2012 < 64 >

EGR cooler ERCS monitors the differential pressure across the EGR cooler. The diff-press is used for: Detection of backflow Supervision of the cooler clogging Two different designs of EGR cooler have been used on the first 4 engines. Stainless cooler with only pipes Stainless cooler with fins (and pipes) The diff-press across the pipe cooler was significantly higher than design values. MDT and cooler maker is investigating this problem. Cooler maker has revised their design for significantly improved performance in this area. CSIC regulation on methane slip MAN Diesel & Turbo Author - ME-GI Current Users Forum, topic Busan 20.09.2017 00.00.2012 < 56 < > 88 >

Considerations when dealing with China We have recently been informed that as of 1 July 2018, methane slip from gas engines will be restricted on inland waterways in China. The 1.5-2 g/kwh limit to be enforced is a huge blow to the Otto-cycle engine solutions, as they will have difficulties in meeting this limit. In fact, they may not be able to do so. This shows a trend towards reducing the methane slip instead of NOx emissions, which is different from other areas. The next step could very well be to expand this regulation to cover Chinese waters in general, which would create problems for owners who have chosen an X-DF engine. Owners wanting to establish a good relationship with China should keep this in mind when they select engine technology.
