What is Automatic Temperature Compensation? Battery charging voltages should be corrected based on battery temperature. This adjustment is referred to as temperature compensation, a charging feature that helps ensure that a battery is neither undercharged nor overcharged regardless of battery temperature. What is the Science behind this technology? All chemical reactions are affected by ambient temperature. Battery charging is an electrochemical reaction, so it too is affected by ambient temperature. Specifically, batteries in cold environment require a higher charge voltage in order to push current into the battery plates and electrolyte, and batteries in warm conditions require a lower charge voltage to eliminate potential damage and reduce unnecessary gassing. Temperature compensation is very important. Without it, battery banks are not optimally charged, resulting in poor performance and decreased operational life. It is well known that all batteries SMF/ Flooded/ LA require different charging voltage at different temperatures. In cold ambience, the battery requires higher than normal charge voltage in order to deliver maximum possible performance. In warm ambience, charging voltage must be reduced to prevent overcharging and consequent loss of electrolyte. Temperature compensation is absolutely essential when batteries are located in outdoor cabinets or other areas subject to extremes of temperature. The effects of uncontrolled operating temperature are : Higher ambient temperatures lead to higher battery temperature Decreases battery s ability to dissipate heat Increases chemical reaction and corrosion rate Increases float current and heating Accelerates gassing rate and recombination Results in dry-out of batteries CONTROLLING THE BATTERY TEMPERATURE SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASES THE CAPACITY AND LIFE OF A BATTERY. Some battery manufacturers specify high or low temperature compensation limits. or both, for absorption and float target voltages.

This helps ensure that a battery is neither undercharged nor overcharged regardless of battery temperature. Using normal target voltages to charge a battery that is colder than approximately 25ºC will result in an undercharged battery, which will deliver lower performance, reduced life and a higher life cycle cost. Applying normal target voltages to a battery that is hotter than 25ºC may result in an overcharged battery. This could lead to the drying out of battery cells, excessive outgassing, increased battery maintenance in the form of more frequent watering and reduced battery life.
