The original concept was a design that worked from the inside out to achieve an interior that maximises usable space for practicality and comfort. In 2010 the range of three and five-door hatchbacks was developed further to offer full hybrid technology in the British-built Auris hybrid. Introducing Toyota s Hybrid Synergy Drive has made Auris a unique proposition as the first model in its class to be offered with the choice of petrol, diesel and full hybrid powertrains. At the same time, the entire model range gained a series of exterior design changes which give the car a stronger Toyota family brand image and a more energetic and individual appearance. The SR grade was also introduced, styled with a sportier feel to strengthen the appeal to a younger market. Customer feedback influenced Toyota in the extensive improvements it made to the interior in terms of quality, materials, ergonomics, comfort, storage and visual appeal.

2 Ride and handling were also fine-tuned, with close collaboration between the Auris chief engineer and Toyota s European and Japanese research and development teams to achieve performance that better responds to European roads and the preferences of European customers, with high-speed stability, secure handling and ride comfort. New grade, new equipment for 2011 model year With principal styling revisions carried out in 2010, the changes to Auris for the 2011 model year focus on equipment and detailing. The principal new feature is a new entry level grade, Auris Edition, which replaces the T 2. It offers a higher standard specification than the out-going model, adopting new features including 16-inch alloy wheels, electric heated, retractable door mirrors that are colourmatched to the bodywork and colour-keyed doorhandles. TR models gain rear parking sensors while both the TR and SR grades provide Bluetooth and Cruise Control as standard. New-design alloy wheels, a sports cloth upholstery and analogue dials (1.6 Valvematic and 1.4 D-4D) are also part of the 2011 TR specification. Changes introduced from the 2010 model year give the car a stronger Toyota family brand image and reinforce the comfortable, secure driving experience. Customer feedback inspired the use of higher quality soft touch materials in the cabin, with improved ergonomics and stronger visual appeal. Changes included a new centre console, a more comfortable leather steering wheel with a flat bottom section, additional switchgear, instruments that are clearer to read and a revised handbrake design. Exterior Design Following styling revisions for the 2010 model year, Auris retains the same 2,600mm wheelbase as before, but is longer overall by 25mm at 4,245, thanks to redesigned bumpers that increased the front and rear overhangs by 10 and 15mm respectively, to 905 and 740mm. The entire front end of the car was changed with a new bonnet, radiator grille, headlamps,

3 bumper and spoiler, reinforcing the model s broad, muscular proportions. The concave profile of the bonnet s centre section has been replaced with a wider, convex curve, and stronger crease lines flow back from the prominent Toyota badge. A body-coloured grille with horizontal bars like that on Verso and Avensis has been added, emphasising the car s wide track and stable stance. The headlamp clusters have a bolder, swept-back look with prominent low-beam projector lamps. Restyling of the lower bumper and front spoiler incorporates a wider grille and integral foglamps positioned at the far corners of the bumper. Turn indicator lamps have been added to the door mirrors, which themselves are colour-matched to the car s exterior. At the rear there is a stronger look, with the bumper corners extended outwards to create a catamaran profile. A wide chrome strip above the number plate strengthens the horizontal lines and new tail light clusters combine horizontal layers and a twin-ring lamp design. Colours For the 2011 model year, nine exterior colours are available, including Island Blue, newly available for Edition models, and Deep Titanium, introduced for TR and SR versions. Interior design High quality soft touch materials are used in Auris for the top of the instrument binnacle and the upper glovebox. The height of the centre console storage box means it can also function as an armrest. The leather-trimmed steering wheel has a flat bottom section for extra comfort and convenience. Additional audio control switches are located on the wheel, together with a trip computer display button. Illumination of the Optitron instrument dials on the Edition models is white for better clarity and visibility. The bridged centre console, which brings the gear lever, handbrake and instrumentation within the closest possible reach of the driver, has a bright metallic finish which matches the door handles. 4 Toyota s European and Japanese R&D teams collaborated closely on interpreting regional customer feedback and using extensive UK and European testing to fine tune Auris s suspension to better suit European roads and driver preferences. The result is stable highspeed driving performance with secure handling and greater ride comfort. The speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) was also revised and refined (from the 2010 model year) to deliver better feedback and improved vehicle agility. Suspension The suspension is fine tuned to improve overall ride comfort, without compromising the vehicle s agility and secure handling. The front suspension features an L-arm MacPherson strut, a compact and highly rigid design that brings the strut inboard from the wheel hub. This allows for a wider track with greater stability and excellent suppression of noise and vibration. The front damper settings have been adjusted to achieve a smoother ride. At the rear there is a highly effective and super-compact torsion beam system. Thanks to a separate spring and damper layout, the rear suspension does not intrude in the spacious flatfloor rear load space. As with the front suspension, the dampers are ttuned for better ride quality. Steering With a quick 14.44:1 ratio and 2.9 turns lock-to-lock the Auris s speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) is tuned for better feedback and vehicle agility. The compact, high-output motor and torque sensor are built into the steering column, giving the best possible steering assistance for more precise vehicle control. EPS contributes to overall fuel efficiency by using power only when steering force assistance is needed. It is highly durable and requires no hydraulic fluid. Brakes and tyres Auris is equipped with the Bosch ABS 8.1 and ESP 8 braking and stability systems, incorporating Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) are available as an option on all models (standard on Auris Hybrid). Auris Edition and TR models are fitted with 16-inch alloys with 205/55R16 tyres and the Auris

5 SR rides on 17-inch alloys with 225/45R17 tyres. Auris hybrid, launched in July 2010, has been designed exclusively for Europe and is the first application of full hybrid technology in a Toyota core model, leading the way for Hybrid Synergy Drive to feature in Toyota s entire European range by the end of the decade. Auris hybrid s powertrain combines a 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine and a 60kW electric motor powered by a 27kW nickel-metal hydride battery, generating a total system power output of 134bhp and performance to match that of a conventional 2.0-litre diesel hatchback. The technology delivers impressive fuel economy and emissions performance, with 89g/km CO 2 output and NOx emissions significantly lower than those from diesel powered cars of comparable performance. Moreover, when switched to EV (electric vehicle) mode, the car will produce zero CO 2 and NOx tailpipe emissions, for distances of up to 1.2 miles at speeds up to 30mph. Auris hybrid comfortably meets Euro 5 emissions standards and is expected to comply with future Euro 6 requirements. Toyota Optimal Drive Toyota Optimal Drive brings together a wide range advanced powertrain technologies and engineering design solutions to optimise the balance of performance and driving pleasure with fuel economy and low emissions. The core technologies focus on three key aspects of powertrain development: The reduction of weight through the use of super lightweight and highly compact engine components and transmissions.

6 The minimisation of mechanical losses through the adoption of Valvematic a further development of Toyota s VVT-i technology in the 1.6-litre petrol engine; new roller rocker technology; smaller, lighter pistons; low viscosity oil; and new six-speed manual and MultiMode transmissions. The maximisation of combustion efficiency, through adopting a high 11.5:1 compression ratio in Auris s 1.33 Dual VVT-i petrol engine; Valvematic, refinement of intake port and combustion chamber design; and the introduction of piston cooling by oil jet. The diesel engine has a lower compression ratio, optimised combustion chamber dimensions; enhanced exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler efficiency; and stainless steel exhaust manifolds. Auris also plays a key role in reducing Toyota s whole-fleet CO 2 average, which, according to research by Clean Green Cars, has already fallen well below the EU s target level of 130g/km for all manufacturers to achieve by All Auris powertrains meet Euro 5 emissions standards litre dual VVT-i with Stop & Start Auris s 1.33-litre petrol engine is equipped with innovative Stop & Start technology and Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing intelligent). It runs at a very high 11.5:1 compression ratio, which increases the engine s thermal efficiency. It generates 100bhp and maximum torque of 132Nm at 3,800rpm. This performance is combined with 48.7mpg combined cycle fuel consumption and 135g/km CO 2 emissions. Profiting from Toyota s extensive motorsport experience, the small bore, long stroke engine is exceptionally light and compact, improving the car s power-to-weight ratio. It features a resintype cylinder head cover and intake manifold, and the intake channel has been streamlined to optimise airflow for better combustion efficiency. Dual VVT-i helps boost response levels across the entire rev range by varying the air-fuel intake and exhaust valve timing to suit the conditions at any given time. As well as improving torque at low and medium engine speeds, the system also reduces emissions and aids fuel efficiency. 1.6-litre Valvematic Valvematic is a further development of Toyota s highly successful Dual VVT-i system,

7 delivering a class-leading combination of efficiency, power and torque. It takes VVT-i technology a step forward by adding lift and duration control to the inlet valve variable timing. This improves intake airflow volume and speed management (and, subsequently, combustion process management) to deliver more power for less fuel, with reduced CO 2 emissions. Using Valvematic reduces friction and pumping losses under light engine loads, further reducing fuel consumption. A variable length inlet manifold also supports the engine s efficiency, acting as an accelerator at low to medium engine speeds, maximising inlet air speed for optimum combustion efficiency. At higher engine speeds the manifold opens fully, allowing air to travel via a shorter route and so maximising the volume that enters the combustion chamber and, thus, engine power output. The 1.6-litre Valvematic engine, the top selling engine in the UK Auris range, is available with either a six-speed manual or MultiMode transmission. It develops 130bhp and class-leading maximum torque of 160Nm at just 4,400rpm. With manual transmission the combined cycle figure is 42.8mpg and CO 2 emissions are 153g/km; with MultiMode the figures are 44.8mpg and 146g/km. 1.4-litre D-4D DPF The 1.4-litre D-4D diesel engine is available with six-speed manual or MultiMode transmission. Maximum output is 89bhp and maximum torque is 205Nm, delivered between 1,800 and 2,800rpm, performance that bears comparison with rival 1.5-litre units. It, too, benefits from Toyota Optimal Drive technology to maximise performance and driveability while minimising fuel consumption and CO 2 and particulate emissions. With the addition of a maintenance free diesel particulate filter (DPF) from August 2010, the engine complies with Euro 5 emissions standards. New generation piezoelectric injectors control fuel volume and injection timing more accurately and enable multi-phase high-speed injection. This has the effect of both lowering the rate of combustion expansion and effecting a more thorough burning in the combustion chamber, which further reduces particulate, NOx and CO 2 emissions. Allied to higher common rail injection pressures of 160 Mpa, this results in shorter injection times, combining a faster engine response with improved fuel economy and CO 2 emissions that are among the lowest in the C-segment. With manual transmission the engine returns combined cycle fuel consumption of 58.9mpg

8 and CO 2 emissions of 128g/km; with MultiMode the figures are 57.6mpg and 130g/km. Multimode transmission Available on 1.6 Valvematic petrol and 1.4 D-4D diesel versions Auris, MultiMode is an automated manual transmission with a fully automatic shift mode and no clutch pedal. It offers the driver a choice of two, fully automatic gear change modes or a manual, sequential gear change with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. Selecting E (Economy), M (Manual) or R (Reverse) allows the car to creep in the manner of a conventional automatic. In E mode, automatic gear shifts are made to maximise fuel economy; in ES (Sport) mode up-shifts are delayed to a higher rpm to give a more sporty driving style. Stop & Start technology Toyota s Stop & Start system, featured with the 1.33 Dual VVT-i petrol engine in Auris, automatically switches the engine off when the vehicle is stopped, the shift lever is moved to neutral and the clutch pedal is released; restart is within less than half a second when the clutch pedal is depressed, with virtually no engine sound or vibration. The rapid restart is made possible by the use of the world s first permanently engaged gear mechanism, in which the starter motor and flywheel are linked, via a ring gear, by a one-way clutch. The maintenance-free system not only eliminates the torque limitations of a belt-driven starter motor, it also reduces engine start-up noise levels in the cabin and the level of vibration felt through the seats. Toyota Stop & Start allows the air conditioning system to continue running. When the air con is in use, the engine will not stop if the desired cabin temperature has not been reached. When that temperature is attained, the air conditioner will switch to ECO-run loading, allowing the engine to use the automatic stop function. In the event of low battery charge, or if the vehicle begins to move, the engine will automatically restart as a safety precaution. In conjunction with the Stop & Start system, an ECO indicator light will illuminate during every automatic stop. An ECO counter displays the elapsed time of stops during each drive, and a re-settable ECO odo-counter displays the vehicle s total accumulated idling stop time. The Stop & Start system delivers significant reductions in CO 2 emissions in urban driving and can reduce fuel consumption by up to three per cent, according to driving conditions. Gear shift indicator A Gear Shift Indicator prompts the driver to shift up or down a gear for maximum fuel

9 efficiency. Monitoring driving conditions, vehicle speed and throttle inputs, the system can help cut consumption by between 0.5 and three per cent, depending on individual driving style. Tax efficient with Toyota Optimal Drive The application of Toyota Optimal Drive across the model range ensures that the new Auris 2010 not only achieves the optimum balance of performance and emissions, but also that its fuel consumption and CO 2 output are among the lowest in its segment. This brings tax benefits in many different European markets. In the UK the 1.33 Dual VVT-i engine with Stop & Start falls within Band E for Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), and attracts a 15 per cent rating for BIK (benefit in kind) company car tax. The 1.6 Valvematic manual is in Band G (Band F with Multimode) and is BIK rated at 18 per cent, while Auris models powered by the 1.4 D-4D diesel unit are in Band D, with an 18 per cent BIK rate (Band E with MultiMode). Low insurance groups UK insurance groups for Auris are as follows: ENGINE GRADE INSURANCE GROUP 1.33 Dual VVT-i Edition 10E 1.33 Dual VVT-i TR 10E 1.6 Valvematic TR 16E 1.6 Valvematic SR 16E 1.4 D-4D TR 11E These low ratings have been achieved in part by designing easy-to-repair, insurance-friendly components, such as bolt-on front-end structures and headlamp clusters that are simple to

10 replace. Lower servicing costs The 10,000-mile service schedule is designed to deliver best-in-class servicing, maintenance and repair costs. Component repair cycles have been extended without compromising reliability, durability or safety, or requiring expensive synthetic oil to be used. The carefully considered layout of the engine bay and component access helps keep labour time and hence costs down. All engines are fitted with a maintenance-free timing chain and oil filter elements that cost 45 per cent less than before. Thin, long-reach spark plugs improve cylinder head cooling and are 23 per cent less expensive. Auris benefits from Toyota s established record for low repair costs for impact damage to parts such the headlamps, which have mounting brackets designed to break on impact before the lamp itself is damaged, and a large front bumper, which helps protect the bonnet in a collision. Oil Maintenance Monitoring System The 1.4 D-4D engine is fitted with an Oil Maintenance Monitoring System (OMMS), which continuously monitors engine use and determines the best oil change interval. Automatic valve adjusters on the 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i engine mean there is no need for the valve clearances to be adjusted during the engine s entire lifecycle. Clutches are self-adjusting and an automatic tensioner avoids the need for periodic checks on the auxiliary belt tension. Auxiliary belt life is 65,000 miles and engine coolant will last for 100,000 miles. Toyota five-year/100,000-mile warranty The new Auris 2010 carries Toyota s five-year/100,000-mile warranty, but many of its components are designed to last more than twice as long. The starter motor, for example, has a lifespan of at least eight years. Revised grade structure with improved equipment specifications Auris Edition The entry point to the Auris range is a stronger proposition than ever before with the introduction of the new Edition grade for Going beyond the specification established in

11 the previous T 2 model, it provides as standard 16-inch alloy wheels, heated, retractable door mirrors that are colour-matched to the car s bodywork and similarly colour-keyed doorhandles. These elements are in addition to established features such as air conditioning and a fourspeaker sound system with USB port. Island Blue is a new metallic paint option for Edition models, and owners can also specific Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Traction Control (TRC) and a Protection Pack for the five-door version (floor mats, mudflaps, boot liner and scuff plates). Auris TR Auris TR, the core model in the range, is newly equipped with rear parking sensors, Bluetooth with voice control and on the 1.6 Valvematic cruise control. A new, sporty interior trim has been introduced in dark grey with silver detailing, and analogue meters now feature in the 1.4 D-4D and 1.6 Valvematic versions, adding to the sportier feel. On the outside, there are new-design five-spoke 16-inch alloys and a new metallic colour choice Deep Titanium. Elsewhere the TR retains its core equipment features, including climate control, six-speaker audio with USB, electric windows and front fog lamps. Auris SR Auris SR, offered exclusively as a five-door with the 1.6 Valvematic engine and six-speed manual transmission, also adopts cruise control and Bluetooth as standard for 2011, plus the Deep Titanium metallic paint option. These add to a specification that includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, dark-tinted rear privacy glass and darkened headlamp lenses.
