Preface This preface describes the prerequisite requirements for installing Riverbed systems to a Telco-type rack. The preface includes the following sections: Overview on page 1 Rack Installation Safety Guidelines on page 2 Required Tools and Equipment on page 3 Safety Guidelines on page 4 Additional Resources on page 4 Contacting Riverbed on page 5 Important: For rack installation instructions describing 560 and 760 systems, see the documentation enclosed with these products. Important: All 2U and 3U systems must be mounted to a four-post rack; they cannot be mounted to a two-post rack. Overview Depending on your order, some systems require that the inner rails be attached to the chassis before they can be installed in a rack. Square Post-Hole Adaptor Rack cabinets can have square or circular holes in the vertical posts. If necessary, to accommodate standard screws you can convert the square post-holes to circular holes using the included square post-hole adaptors. Rack Installation Guide 1

Preface Rack Installation Safety Guidelines To convert a square post-hole to fit a standard screw Press together the top and bottom of the square post-hole adaptor and push it into the square hole on the rack post. Figure i. Installing Square Post-Hole Adaptor Rack Installation Safety Guidelines Prior to installing the system in a rack, adhere to the following rack installation guidelines: Do not block or cover the openings to the system. Never push objects of any kind through openings in the equipment. Dangerous voltages might be present. Conductive foreign objects can produce a short circuit and cause fire, electric shock, or damage to your equipment. Lift equipment using both hands and with your knees bent. Observe local occupational health and safety requirements and guidelines for manual materials handling. Do not attempt to move a rack by yourself; a minimum of two people is needed to move a rack. Do not attempt to move a rack on an incline that is greater than 10 degrees from the horizontal. Installing components in a rack without the front and side stabilizers can cause the rack to tip over. Always install rack stabilizers before you install components in a rack. Make sure the rack is properly secured to the floor or ceiling. Always load the rack from the bottom up. Load the heaviest component in the rack first. Make sure racks are coupled together if it is a multiple-rack installation. Make sure the rack is level and stable before installing an appliance in the rack. Make sure the leveling jacks are extended to the floor. Make sure the full weight of the rack rests on the leveling jacks. Make sure the rack is level and stable before pulling a component out of the rack. Make sure only one component is extended at a time. A rack might become unstable if more than one component is extended. Ensure that there is adequate airflow in the rack. Improper installation or restricted airflow can damage the equipment. 2 Rack Installation Guide

Required Tools and Equipment Preface The rack cannot have solid or restricted airflow doors. You must use a mesh door on the front and back of the rack or remove the doors to ensure adequate airflow to the system. The rack width and depth must allow for proper serviceability and cable management. Ensure that there is adequate airflow in the rack. Improper installation or restricted airflow can damage the equipment. Models 150/250/550/CX255/CX555/CX755 are designed for the desktop. If you install them in a rack, do not place equipment on top of the unit as it restricts airflow and might cause damage to the equipment. Make sure the product is properly mated with the rails. Products that are improperly mated with the rails might be unstable. Verify that the AC power supply branch circuit that provides power to the rack is not overloaded. This will reduce the risk of personal injury, fire, or damage to the equipment. The total rack load should not exceed 80 percent of the branch circuit rating. Consult the electrical authority having jurisdiction over your facility wiring and installation requirements. The 1U, 2U, and 3U systems produce front-to-back cooling airflow that requires an unobstructed airflow to the fan housing. Do not mount the system near other electronic devices that produce backto-front airflow. The Series x50 require sideways airflow. Do not block the sides. The Series x50 require air-convection cooling. If these models are installed in a rack, use the Riverbed provided rack-mount. This device for use only in a machine room or IT room. Make sure that the area in which you install the system is properly ventilated and climate-controlled. Ensure that the voltage and frequency of your power source match the voltage and frequency inscribed on the electrical rating label of the equipment. Do not install the system in or near a plenum, air duct, radiator, or heat register. Never use the product in a wet location. For detailed safety information, see the Safety and Compliance Guide. Required Tools and Equipment You need the following tools and equipment to mount the system to a rack: A standard Telco-type rack A standard Phillips-head screwdriver The enclosed screw kit The enclosed short rack adaptors (if needed) The enclosed square post-hole converters (if needed) The enclosed brackets for mounting the Series x50 (if needed) If your system is missing any components, please contact Riverbed Support for replacement parts at Rack Installation Guide 3

Preface Safety Guidelines Safety Guidelines Follow the safety precautions outlined in the Safety and Compliance Guide when installing and setting up your equipment. Important: Failure to follow these safety guidelines can result in injury or damage to the equipment. Mishandling of the equipment voids all warranties. Read and follow safety guidelines and installation instructions carefully. Many countries require the safety information to be presented in their national languages. If this requirement applies to your country, consult the Safety and Compliance Guide. Before you install, operate, or service the Riverbed products, you must be familiar with the safety information. 43 CHAPTER 3 Installing Whitewater Series xx30 Systems in a Rack This chapter describes how to install Whitewater xx30 Series appliances and Whitewater expansion shelves in a standard Telco-type rack. It includes the following sections: Before You Begin on page 39 Installing Whitewater xx30 Series Appliances in a Rack on page 40 Installing Whitewater Expansion Shelves in a Rack on page 42 Before You Begin Before you begin the installation process: Unplug the AC power cords. Remove all external devices and connectors. Important: Operation of the Whitewater xx30 series appliances or expansion shelves with any modules missing will disrupt the airflow and the system will not receive sufficient cooling. It is essential that all apertures are filled when the unit is in operation. Never leave a drive bay unpopulated for more than a few minutes and always have a replacement drive ready to exchange for a disk drive pulled from the enclosure. (The 730 appliance includes dummy drive carriers and blanking plates for this purpose.) Opening the Bezel To open the bezel, firmly press in the tabs on each side of the bezel and pull the top of the bezel toward you. The bezel remains attached to the system on hinges. Rack Installation Guide 39

Installing Whitewater Series xx30 Systems in a Rack Installing Whitewater xx30 Series Appliances in a Rack Installing Whitewater xx30 Series Appliances in a Rack This section provides prerequisites and installation details for mounting Whitewater xx30 appliances in a rack. Rack Installation Pre-Requisites The Whitewater xx30 Series appliance is designed for installation into an industry standard 19-inch rack cabinet subject to the following requirements: The rail kit is suitable for 19-inch racks with square and round holes only. The minimum distance between vertical rack posts is 24 inches (610 mm). The maximum distance between vertical rack posts is 36 inches (914 mm). There must be a minimum depth of 707 mm (27.83 inches) from rack posts to maximum extremity of enclosure (excluding rear cabling). The rack must be able to support enclosures weighing up to 32 kg (71 lb). There must be a minimum gap of 25 mm (1 inch) between the rack cover and front of the enclosure. There must be a minimum gap of 50 mm (2 inches) between the rear of the enclosure and the rear of the rack to maintain the correct air flow around the enclosure. Use in a fully enclosed rack installation is not recommended. The rack design should take into consideration the maximum operating ambient temperature for the unit, which is 35 C. The system must be operated with low pressure rear exhaust installation. The back pressure created by rack doors and obstacles must not exceed 5 pascals (0.5mm water gauge). The following tools are required: No. 2 Phillips screwdriver or flat-blade screwdriver. Torx driver (for drive module locks). Mounting the Whitewater xx30 Appliance in a Rack Follow the steps in this section to install the Whitewater xx30 Series appliance in a rack. To mount the Whitewater xx30 Series appliance in a rack 1. Remove the rack mounting rail kit from the accessory box. 2. Ensure the pre-assembled rail is at its shortest length. 3. Locate the rail location pins inside the front of the rack post. The rail location pins are pre-assembled to suit square hole or round hole racks. Do not remove these pins. 4. Extend the rail to enable the rear location pins to fit in the rear rack post. 40 Rack Installation Guide

Installing Whitewater xx30 Series Appliances in a Rack Installing Whitewater Series xx30 Systems in a Rack 5. Ensure the pins are securely located at both the front and rear, so that any load on the rail is transferred to the rack posts. Figure 3-1. Securing Brackets to the Rack 6. Install the front and rear clamping screws. There are 4 screws in total left and right sides, front and rear. The screws should be left loose enough to allow the rail to move sideways in its slots. 7. Slide the chassis fully home on the rails. 8. Withdraw the chassis approximately 200 mm and fully tighten the front and rear rail clamping screws. 9. Fasten the front of the chassis using the two captive screws. Important: Chassis rails have features to restrict chassis withdrawal while allowing access to fans. If it is necessary to remove the chassis completely, pull the chassis out until it reaches its stops, then press in the latches on the side of the Rack Installation Guide 41
