1 OIL SYSTEM REPLENISHING 1. General Refer to Figure 1. Each engine is equipped with an oil tank. The filler cap is accessible through the upper core cowl 412 AT on left engine or 422 AT on right engine (refer to Chapter 6). The tank has a capacity of 6.6 litres (5.8 imperial quarts, 7.0 US quarts). On aircraft 3001 to 3066, and aircraft 5001 to 5134, the oil level can be determined by a dipstick mounted in the filler cap. On aircraft 5135 and subs, the oil level can be determined by two sight gauges on top of the oil storage tank. One gauge is marked OVER FULL IF DARK and the other gauge is marked ADD OIL IF LIGHT. The oil replenishment system consists of an oil replenishment tank, an oil replenishment pump, a manual selector valve, two oil level probes, a signal conditioner and the oil control panel accessible through the rear equipment bay door. However, engine oil can be checked and replenished remotely by the oil replenishment system. 2. Oil Specification CAUTION: DO NOT MIX DIFFERENT TYPES OF OIL; CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MAKES THEM INCOMPATIBLE. IF OIL TYPES ARE MIXED, DRAIN AND FLUSH THE SYSTEM AND REFILL WITH AN APPROVED OIL. DO NOT MIX CASTROL 4000 WITH ANY OTHER OIL. OIL CONTAMINATION CAN OCCUR. DO NOT MIX MOBIL RM 184A TURBO OIL WITH ANY OTHER OIL. OIL CONTAMINATION CAN OCCUR. MIXING DIFFERENT APPROVED BRANDS OF TYPE II IS AUTHORIZED. REFER TO THE GENERAL ELECTRIC SERVICE MANUAL BEFORE MIXING OIL BRANDS. DRAIN AND FLUSH THE OIL SYSTEM IF OIL TYPES HAVE BEEN MIXED. 3 3. Replenishing The engine oil may be checked and replenished directly at the engine oil tank (refer to paragraph A.) or by the oil replenishment system (refer to paragraph B.). A. Check Oil Level at Engine (Figure 2) CAUTION: EXAMINE THE OIL QUANTITY BETWEEN 15 AND 30 MINUTES AFTER YOU STOP THE ENGINE, OR IN LESS THAN 5 MINUTES AFTER A DRY MOTOR RUN. IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS, THE QUANTITY INDICATION WILL BE INCORRECT AND YOU WILL FILL THE ENGINE WITH TOO MUCH OIL. THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. On aircraft 3001 to 3066 and aircraft 5001 to 5134, (1) Open engine upper translating and core cowls and check oil level by removing filler cap dipstick from engine oil storage tank. Safe oil level is above ADD line on dipstick. (2) If oil level is below ADD line on dipstick, slowly add oil until oil level is between 1 QT and 2 QT marks. (3) If oil tank contents are very low and if low or fluctuating pressures have not been recorded, proceed as follows: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) Check for external leakage and oil filter contamination. Clean oil filter element (refer to Engine Maintenance Manual). Fill tank and record quantity of oil added to system. Carry out an engine ground run paying particular attention to oil system pressure and temperature (refer to Check oil level and oil filter condition immediately after engine shutdown. If both are satisfactory no further action is required. (4) If oil does not register on dipstick, add oil as required. Motor engine for 30 seconds, check oil level again and add oil as required. (5) If oil level is above overflow point after motoring, remove excess oil, motor engine for 30 seconds and check oil level again. Repeat until oil level does not change after motoring. (6) Install filler cap dipstick and ensure that lock lever is in down position. (7) Wipe off any excess oil. Page 3 Apr 24/2006
