1 1. General Fuel Tank Servicing A. Fuel shall conform to PWA-522 specifications. Fuel distribution should be such that during pressure fueling, the fuel level in both wings will be equal at all tines. B. The airplane is normally fueled using the pressure fueling method (paragraph 3.). However, if pressure-fueling facilities are not available, overawing fill ports in the main tanks may be used. (Refer to Paragraph 4.) A pressure fueling station is located under each wing between the engine nacelles. The fueling station in the left wing contains the control panel for controlling and monitoring the pressure-fueling operator. If an overwing fueling operation is being preferred, the center wing tank and reserve tanks can be filled by applying electrical power and transferring the fuel from the main tanks. If a tank has an inoperative fuel quantity indicator, the fuel quantity can be determined by checking the indicator for the opposite tank. The tanks will fill at an equal rate. These readings can also be verified with the measuring sticks in the 1ower wing skin. During any fueling operation, observe and follow all standard fueling precautions and practices. Refer to for fuel sump draining. DO NOT POSITION GROUND EQUIPMENT UNDER THE WING TIP DURING FUELING 0PERATINS. THE WING IS DEFLECTED DOWNWARDS UNDER THE FUEL LOAD WITH THE WING TIP BEING DEFLECTED THE MOST. ALS0 THE FUEL TANKS ARE VENTED THROUGH THE WING TIPS THAT MAY PRODUCE A DANGEROUS AND EXPLOSIVE MIXTURE AROUND THE WING TIP. 3. Replenish Fue1 Tank (Pressure Method) (See figure 301.) A. Ground airplane and fueling trucks. WARNING: AIPPLANE AND FUEL TRUCK SH0ULD BE PROPERLY GROUNDED BEFORE ANY FUELING OPERAT ION TO PREVENT THE POSSIBILITY OF FIRE OR EXPLOSION DUE TO DISCHARGE OF STATIC ELECTRICITY. B. Provide electrical power. C. Open fueling station access doors and control panel access door on left.
2 D. Press TEST GAGE switch and check that all fueling quantity indicators are operating. E. Press-to-test all fueling valve position lights. F. Connect fueling nozzle ground plugs to grounding jacks. G. Remove fueling receptacle caps and connect fueling nozzles. H. Position applicable fueling valve switches to OPEN. I. Start fueling operation. NOTE: All fueling nozzle pressures should be adjusted equally to 50 psi. J. After fueling operation has started, check operation of volumntric shutoff control unit by pressing TEST GAGE switch and holding in for 5 to 13 seconds. Check that flow to each tank stops and that valve position light goes out. K. Release TEST GAGE switch and resume fueling operation. L. Watch fueling quantity indicators until fuel load requirements are net. If a tank is to be partially filled, close the fuel valve switch when the desired amount is reached. NOTE: Tanks to be completely filled will shut off automatically when full. When operation is complete, stop fueling source. NOTE: If required fuel load is exceeded, fuel may be removed from airplane or transferred from tank to tank. M. Disconnect. fueling nozzles, then disconnect nozzle grounding plugs. N. Install fueling receptacle caps. O. Close fueling station access doors. P. P. Check that all fueling valve switches are in CLOSED position, then close fueling control panel door. Q. Q Disconnect fueling truck grounding cables. R. R. Remove electrical power if no longer required.
3 4. Replenish Fuel Tank (Overwing Manual) (See figures 301 and 302.) A. Ground airplane and fueling truck. WARNING: AIRPLANE AND FUELING TRUCK MUST BE PR0PERLY GR0UNDED BEF0RE ANY FUELING OPERATION TO PREVENT POSSIBILITY OF FIRE OR EXPL0SION DUE TO DISCHARGE OF STATIC ELECTRICITY. B. Provide electrical power. NOTE: If electrica1 power cannot be applied to airplane, fuel must be measured with measuring sticks. Power must be available to fuel center wing tank and reserve tanks by transfer from main tanks. C. Ground fueling nozzles to ground Jacks adjacent to fill ports. WARNING: DO NOT REMOVE FILLER CAPS BEFORE GROUND FUELING NOZZLES. FIRE OR EXPLOSION COULD RESULT FROM STATIC DISCHARGE. D. Remove filler caps and start fueling operation. E. If center wing tank and reserve tanks are to be fueled transfer fuel from main tanks. F. After fue1 transfer, refill main tanks to desired level. G. Remove fuel nozzle and install filler cap. H. Disconnect grounding cables. I. Remove fueling truck grounding cables. J. Remove electrical power if no longer required. H. Verify that landing gear doors are closed I. Verify that No. 3 (overwing) main entry doers, If installed, are closed prior to fueling. CAUTION: FUEL LOAD MAY PREVENT NO. 3 (OYERWING) ENTRY DOORS FROM CLOSING.
4 J. Check that outboard reserve, and main tank transfer valves we in CLOSED position. K. Position refuel power switch as applicable, Fig (1) APU or external power NORMAL (2) Battery power BATTERY L. Press TEST GAGE switch to ensure all quantity indicators working. Use measuring sticks for inoperative or inaccurate gages as required. M. Press test all fueling valve position Lights and check that all fueling valve switches are in CLOSED position. CAUTION: DO NOT COCK OR FORCE THE FUELING NOZZLE DURING INSTALLATION OR REMOVAL. N. Remove fueling receptacle caps and connect underwing fueling nozzles, Fig Open manual shut off valve at fueling manifold. P. Check that deadman valve is spring-loaded to OFF (closed) position. NOTE: Do not use unit if valve spring is broken or switch will not close when released. Do not wedge or block open a deadman valve. WARNING: ON PA , WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN MODIFIED BY EA 4728A003, WHEN FUELING PRESSURES ON BOTH SIDES OF AIRPLANE ARE UNEQUAL, FUEL CAN CROSSFLOW THOUGH REFUELING MANIFOLD FROM ONE FUELING TRUCK INTO THE OPPOSITE FUELING TRUCK. THIS CAN RESULT IN FUEL SPILLAGE. FUELING SHOULD BE STARTED SIMULTANEOUSLY FROM BOTH TRUCKS. IF BOTH TRUCKS DO NOT START FUELING AT THE SAME TIME OR IF ONE TRUCK IS SHUT DOWN BEFORE THE OTHER, MANUAL SHUTOFF VALVE AT THE UNPRESSURIZED RECEPTACLE SHOULD BE CLOSED. NOTE: On all airplanes except PA and PA after EA4728A003 accomplished, check valves in fueling receptacles prevent fuel crossflow between fueling trucks.
