They consist of precisely-shaped three-dimensional pyramids distributed uniformly over the surface of the disc. As these pyramids wear, fresh, sharp mineral is constantly exposed to the workpiece, resulting in faster, more consistent performance cutting throughout the life of the discs. EX Paint Finishing System Use the EX system for optimal performance every time. Unique formulas quickly remove scratches and other surface defects. 3 Tech Tips: When removing dirt nibs or leveling excess clear coat, using a dry application abrasive, like the 3M Purple Finishing Film Hookit Disc, will allow you to see your work. Wet sanding is a messier process and requires additional time wiping dry to see if the defect is removed from the panel. Depending on the size of the defect, 3M recommends using grade P2000 Purple Finishing Film for the majority of applications. The cutting power is still there, but the finish is finer, saving you valuable process time. For heavy texture and large dirt nibs, grade P1500 Purple Finishing Film is still a viable option. Using 3M Trizact Hookit Foam 3000 and 5000 Grade Discs will allow you to begin the polishing process with an abrasive. By using 3M Trizact Hookit Foam Discs you will be able to utilize 3M Perfect-it EX Rubbing Compound with a Quick Connect White Foam Compounding Pad to quickly remove any sand scratches left behind. Using a foam compounding pad instead of a wool compounding pad will decrease your process time and reduce the amount of swirl comebacks. This is very important for dark coloured vehicles. A wool compounding pad is more aggressive than foam and tends to leave a deeper swirl mark that the technician will need to remove later in the process. Abrasive polishing with 3M Trizact Hookit Foam 3000 and 5000 Grade Discs will reduce your buffing time and eliminate the need for a wool compounding pad, making the job easier and faster! The Most Common Causes of Frustration in Paint Finishing Swirl Marks on Dark Cars. Are you having difficulty removing swirl marks? To remove dirt nibs and level excess surface texture over large or small areas use the following fine grade 3M abrasives: 3M Purple Finishing Film, P1500, 260L+. > Use dry to highlight surface defects > Sand out highlighted defects and match surface texture 3M Trizact Clear Coat Sanding Disc, P1500. > Use damp for long life and reduced pigtail marks To reduce compounding time, refine the scratches left after step 1 using the following 3M abrasives: 3M Trizact Hookit Foam Disc, P3000. > Use damp to reduce compounding time Additional scratch refinement. (Optional) For the best results and to reduce your buffing time while achieving the ultimate finish, further refine the P3000 scratch using the Trizact 5000 abrasive: 3M Trizact Hookit Foam Disc, Trizact 5000 abrasive.* > Use damp to further reduce compounding time *P3000 abrasive is required prior to using Trizact 5000 abrasive Compounding Polishing To remove sand scratches completely in the shortest amount of time use the following 3M compound and pads: 3M Perfect-It EX Rubbing Compound, PN M Perfect-It Compounding Pads: > For fastest cut and less heat use a Perfect-It Wool Compounding Pad, 5753 (Quick Connect) > Eliminate lint and achieve a finer finish use a Perfect-it Foam Compounding Pad, PN 5706 (Quick Connect) > Work a 60cm x 60cm area at a time If you are working on a small area (not full panels), and have thoroughly refined the sanded area with the 3000 and 5000 grade discs you could eliminate this step and go straight to machine polishing To remove compound swirl marks use the following 3M polish and pads 3M Perfect-It EX Machine Polish PN M Perfect-It EX Machine Polishing Pads: > For the best finish on all colours use with a black Perfect-It Foam Polishing Pad, PN 5707 (Quick Connect) > Use medium pressure to remove swirl marks > Use light pressure to polish > Work a 60cm x 60cm area at a time Swirl Elimination To eliminate fine swirl marks (even on dark coloured vehicles) use the following 3M polish and pads. 3M Perfect-It EX Ultrafine Machine Polish, PN M Perfect-It EX Ultrafine Machine Polishing Pads: > For the best finish use with a blue Perfect-It Ultrafine Polishing Pad, PN 5708 (Quick Connect) > To eliminate fine swirl marks (even on black coloured vehicles) polish with medium pressure > To produce the finest finish, polish with light pressure > DO NOT BUFF DRY - leave a wet film on the surface > Wipe with a blue 3M Perfect-it Detail Cloth, 6020
