6 ENERGYEFFICIENT CAST IRON INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS FOR MOTOR EFFICIENCY The efficiency factor defines the efficiency of motors when transforming electrical energy into mechanical energy. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), in order to harmonize the energy consumption regulations aimed to reduce the CO emissions and the impact of industrial operations on the environment, has established the standard IEC 04:00 which defines energy efficiency classes for lowvoltage, threephase, Hz and Hz squirrel cage induction motors. For many years lowvoltage threephase motors in the European Union have been sold in three efficiency classes EFF, EFF and EFF1. Energy efficiency classification systems have been introduced and wellproven in many countries all over the world. They unfortunately differ from each other in terms of scope, wording and values. That was the reason for the International Electrotechnical Commission IEC to develop and publish an energy efficiency standard which replaces all the different national issues. In parallel IEC developed and issued a new standard for determining the motor efficiencies. The new standard IEC 04 defines and harmonizes worldwide the efficiency classes IE1, IE and IE for lowvoltage threephase motors in the power range from 0. kw to kw. New international efficiency classes of lowvoltage threephase motors IE = International Efficiency The new IEC 04:00 defines worldwide the following efficiency classes of LV threephase motors, in the range from 0. to kw. IE1 = Standard Efficiency (efficiency levels roughly equivalent to EFF in Europe nowadays). IE = High Efficiency (efficiency levels roughly equivalent to EFF1 in Europe nowadays & identical to EPAct in the USA for Hz). IE = Premium Efficiency (new efficiency class in Europe nowadays and identical to "NEMA Premium" in the USA for Hz). According to the Commission Regulation (EC) No 0/009 (introduced in July 009) the required efficiency class of generalpurpose motors (introduced to the market in Europe in future) will be as follows: From June 0, motors placed for the firsttime on the market shall have a minimum efficiency class of IE. From 1 January 0: motors with a rated output between kw shall have a minimum efficiency class of IE, or IE if they are operated/equipped with electronic speed control (VSD). From 1 January 017: motors with a rated output between 0. kw shall have a minimum efficiency class of IE, or IE if they are operated/equipped with electronic speed control (VSD). Electronic speed control is carried out using a frequency converter (VSD) that adjusts the speed of the motor and therefore the torque produced based on the energy needed. 13 ENERGYEFFICIENT CAST IRON INSTALLATION CONDITIONS The motors conform to degree of protection IP as per IEC 0. The standard design for horizontal mounting is suitable for indoor and protected outdoor installation (temperature of coolant 0 C to + C).
