6 PRESIDENTIAL THOUGHTS Rick Seiferth President SHIFTING INTO SPRING! UPCOMING RMR SEASON EVENTS... We opened registration on April 3rdfor our 60th Anniversary Celebration at Vail event. We were amazed at the reception that this multi-day event had from our membership. Availing themselves o f a n early bird discount we were able to fill 100% of our initial block of rooms at the Lodge At Vail within the first week of registration! This is RMR s first multiday event in over 10-years and shows the pent-up demand that we have for this type of event. Our PCA Executive Council Secretary, Cindy Jacisin as well as our Zone 9 Representative, Rich Sanders will be in attendance. Our 60th Anniversary Committee is working hard to secure a second block of rooms so that we can increase attendance in this great event. Stay tuned for further information. We held our April social at Mike Ward McLaren in Highlands Ranch. This dealership carries McLaren, Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Fiat. Outside of the new member social this event had to be one of the largest for our club. We had in excess of 300 of our members attend this event. In preparation for the upcoming driving season we held out HPDE/ Autocross class at3-r Racing in Englewood. We duplicated last years great attendance with another 60 plus participants including new members, RMR Board members, several of our driving instructors. This event had a lot of influence in increasing the attendance at our 2017 driving events. Congratulations to Brian Leary and Doug Bartlett for a job well done! May 5th and 6th will be the dates of our first driving event at High Plains Raceway. Stick and Paddle registration opened April 30th and it appears that we will have a good turnout. The weather should be great so this would have been a great opportunity to shake off those driver s cobwebs. In concert with the Stick and Paddle DE we will have run our Hot Laps and Helgas Tour. On June 2nd, Dave and Jody Schmidt will be running their Gimmick Rally, The Search for Sasquatch. If you have never done a gimmick rally with Dave and Jody do not miss this one. These chairs have a great reputation for putting on some of the most entertaining rallys. All event proceeds are donated to charity. This event will benefit the Colorado Fallen Heroes Foundation. Do not miss out! HG Hot for Porsche? Summer School is coming in June! 6 HighGear Celebrating 60 Years

7 2018 ARCHIVE ALLEY SET THE WAYBACK MACHINE TO 1964, OR RETRO-RACERS A mere 53 years ago, Rocky Mountain Region member Bob Hagestad was one of the first to race a Porsche 904 in the U.S. From 1961 to 1963, Bob Hagestad successfully drove a Porsche Super 90 in seven SCCA regional and national races. His father, Vern, owned Hagestad Volkswagen and Porsche dealership on housed in an ex-movie theater on West Colfax in Lakewood (now a Harley-Davidson dealership]; Bob lived nearby in an apartment at 1325 Pierce St., When word of the new fiberglass-bodied 904 came down from Porsche AG in late 1963, Bob ordered one. Chassis was delivered (at considerable extra cost) to Denver via United Airlines, and Bob and his girlfriend (later wife) Harriet were at Denver s Stapleton Airport to welcome it. His service manager, the venerable Vern Racek, also a PCA member, then prepared the 2-liter, four-cam-powered car to run in the Daytona Continental Challenge for GT and GT Prototypes in Florida on February 15th. A similar car, , was entered for Daytona by another amateur, Chuck Cassell. An unexplained error in qualifying times meant that Bob, in car 53, had to start from the back of the 32-car pack on the 3.8-mile combination road course and oval. He passed Cassell on the second lap, and both 904s ran well throughout the 250-mile event. After 66 laps, Bob finished fifth overall (third in class), with Cassell ninth. Bob raced the 904 four more times in 1964: June 7th, Continental Divide Raceway, Castle Rock, Colorado. T h i r d i n a l a p feature race, behind Bob Betts in an Elva-Porsche and Hank Candler in a Lotus 23B. June 21st, Road America June Sprints, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Third in the A-C Production race against 289 Cobras and Corvettes. June 28th, Alliance, Nebraska, SCCA Regional. July 26th, Continental Divide Raceway, SCCA Regional. That fall, the newlymarried Bob quit racing and sold the 904 to amateur driver George Drolsom. The third time he raced it, in 1965, Drolsom went off into the bushes at the challenging Meadowdale track in Illinois, wrecking the front of the car. He returned it to the Porsche factory for a rebuild, which included a replacement frame (from , the last six-cylinder 904). The original frame was stored at Porsche in Stuttgart, and in 1967 an independent German restorer bought it and created a new 904 with a 911 engine; as of 2005, the car was still on the road. Bob, of course, went on to run Hagestad Porsche+Audi (now Prestige Imports). Returning to racing in 1973, he successfully competed in his Carrera RSR and 935 in the 1970s (with crew chief Al Lager and engineer Paul Bingham, both RMR members) and now owns a Volkswagen dealership in the Dallas area. For more on 904s raced in the U.S., see the book Porsche 904, 906, and 910 in the Americas by Jerry Pantis. Photographers unknown. 14 TRACK TALK Dan Carlson Leader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee ARE YOU A ONE TRACK WONDER? I asked fellow CDI Dave Stribling what this month s column should feature and he suggested encouraging our members to drive other tracks in addition to our home circuit, High Plains Raceway (HPR) - what a great idea! This hit home as I immediately reflected on the laps that I took around Sebring during its February PCA Club Race weekend. It was a learning experience in so many ways. Why drive another track? Each track offers a new experience, a new challenge. Itwill heighten all of your senses and increase awareness; Because of this, you ll understand your car better - its capabilities, feel, car balance, and what might need adjusting; Your driving skills should improve; You ll meet new friends, andit s always fun; And for me, it allows me to observe another club s best DE practices. A case in point reigning Most Improved Male Driver Mark Fenner drove Road America and Motorsports Park in Hastings, NE and he came back a different driver he took four seconds off of his previous best HPR lap time! We re lucky to have several regional tracks to choose from besides HPR. And if you think about it, they really aren t that far away, particularly with 75 MPH speed limits and no early morning weekend traffic. Here are some highlights: Pueblo Motorsport Park: What a jewel! Before there was HPR, Pueblo was the track, it was home to our annual Club Race, and racers came from all over the country. Why? Everyone comments on how well it flows, particularly from Turn 2 through Turn 8. You need high eyes, and a lot of concentration and nerve through Turns 6A/B and entry into Turn 7. There are multiple lines through the long sweeping Turn 1 each a challenging puzzle. Going there makes for a fun weekend as most stay at the same clubcontracted hotel and restaurants are just across the street. Pikes Peak International Raceway (PPIR) Colorado Springs: This is the former site for Indy Racing League races and the NASCAR Busch Series. You get the rare opportunity to experience high-banked NASCAR Turns 1 and 2 before diving into the infield. You learn that you can t lift in these high speed turns unless you re fond of upsetting your car balance and flirting with something called a concrete wall. You have to strain to look high and long out the upper left corner of your windshield because of the banking. The track facilities are first class - the garages, meeting, lunch, and rest rooms. La Junta Raceway: This is a fun 1.2 mile/7 turn track that features a long sweeping high speed right-hander (Turn 1) where you have to be committed and just can t lift period! Experiencing a turn like this is a rarity in Colorado. Understand that it is a destination and it has a very small town feel, but once you re there with the gang, you ll have a great time bonding. If you want to venture a little further, there s the Aspen Sports Car Club Track, Utah Motorsports Campus (formerly Miller Motorsport Park) Salt Lake City, Motorsports Park Hastings (NE), and Hallett Motor Racing Circuit just west of Tulsa. What s the best way to learn a new track? Unless you re a Formula One driver and have access to a race simulator, try some of these: Download track driving notes and map from the RMR or track websites study it; Find and repeat viewing YouTube track video; Talk to others who have driven there; Once your there, ask for a ride with a local ace to show you the line and share the track s nuances; Arrange to closely follow a local in a similar car around the track for a couple of laps; Talk to as many as you can between driving sessions; Focus on 2 or 3 turns each session; Make notes of everything that you ve learned; and Volunteer to be a corner worker to learn by watching others take a turn if it s allowed. Upcoming Events Grab some friends, and make at least one of these an enjoyable weekend adventure. May AMR DE - Pueblo Motorsport Park May 23 A Conversation with Patrick Long / Annual Instructor Clinic CU South Events Center Lone Tree June RMR DE High Plains Raceway July 7-8 AMR DE - La Junta July RMR DE High Plains Raceway August 11 RMR Ladies DayDE Colorado State Patrol Track August 12 RMR Novice DE Colorado State Patrol Track Who s going to be our Most Improved Female and Male Drivers this year? Now in its 35th year, the show has become one of the grandest, most entertaining and most anticipated car shows in Colorado! To date this spectacular event has raised over $2,000,000 for the ACC Creative Options Early Childhood Education Centers which specialize in providing early care, intervention, prevention, support and education services to expectant mothers and nearly 800 infants, toddlers and pre-school children and their families. The Concours d Elegance and Exotic Sports Car Show is also a excellent opportunity for corporate sponsors to experience tremendous exposure for their company. This prestigious show reaches a well educated and influential audience of car collectors and enthusiasts as well as the general public. The kids win and the corporate sponsors win. 22 I GET AROUND Danielle Badler RMR/PCA Columnist 22 NO YOU CAN T DRIVE THEM It s really frustrating. You go to a new car show, and the streamers are flying, music s blaring, everything s reflected in mirrors and chrome. O the cars. They shimmer, they shake, they beckon. Which is of course the idea. Except you can t drive anything. Yeah, it s a tough one. On press day, I went to the annual car show again this year, here in Denver, and experienced what I call looker s remorse again, as expected. Oh, FCA did offer short test drives around the perimeter of the convention center. But this was during the show, not on press day. And Jeep offered a micro-mini off-road course for their products, in the hall. But that was it. I still like hopping in and out of the posed vehicles. Setting the seat and mirrors. Staring out and deciding the one question that, to me, rates far and above any other parameter. Can I drive this car fast? The first time that simple test came to me was many years ago, when I had the opportunity to sit in a Ferrari Boxer. Not drive it, of course. We were in a convention hall, after all. Just sit in it. But that was enough. This was the first Ferrari I ever sat in. Replete with a gated shifter and all. And, yes, after setting the seat and the mirrors, I knew, I just new, that I could drive that car really fast. I fit. The Corvettes were like that, this year. No ZR1. But they did have a ZO6. Fly yellow. And a base convertible. In black. And, yes, I fit. I must say, out of all the new Vettes I ve seen and driven, here s an observation. For what it s worth, black seems to work best as the color of choice. Because it masks all the black trim around vents and scoops that, to my eye, distorts the homogeneity of the exterior design. Especially something in yellow like the ZO6. But the fact that there was no ZR1 magnifies a problem with the show; it s really a dealer exhibit. This year, Denver came one week after the New York show. So there were no unveils. No ZR1. No Porsche Mission E showcase. Although a local Porsche dealer did have a display of some current models. As did McLaren. And Ferrari. And Lamborghini. And Bentley. And Jaguar. And Aston Martin. Ford showed a Mustang Bullitt, which I didn t get close to. It was up on a stand. Volkswagen showcased a prototype of the Arteon. Which I did sit in. And which looked great. Which brings up one of the things that s actually a lot of fun about attending on press day. Most of the major auto makers schedule time during the day for remarks about their products. Believe it or not, probably the most interesting presentation was from Ram. Not that I m exactly anywhere near the typical shopper for a dual-cab pick-up. But the speaker was the Ram brand manager. Who exuded energy and passion in describing how he has drilled down on just what his buyers are looking for. The brand manager ushered us to the Ram 1500 Limited, and proceeded to tick off the result of that research. A wireless charging pad in the center stack for two hand-held devices. Rear seats that recline up to eight degrees. A center console that opens wide enough to fit a fully-loaded tote bag. Or hanging file folders. Or a 15-inch laptop. And let me note that the only car I ve ever seen with similar storage space is the Tesla Model S. And that s not all. A 12-inch touchscreen with split-screen capability, which is almost as large as, yes, what you find in the Tesla Model S. A digital cluster display with high def 3-D graphics. Power running boards. Air suspension. Who buys these things? Business owners, he said. Although the brand manager noted he also sees a lot of younger family buyers, moving from SUVs. A few other highlights. Acura described the bells and whistles on the new RDX, such as absolute positioning navigation on their true touch pad interface and something called ELS Studio 3D audio, which features speakers mounted above the side windows. On the Jeep Rubicon, the front windshield folds down with just two bolts, rather than six. The doors can still come off, as can the top. And the interior still has drain holes. The Honda Clarity is coming in three versions a plug-in hybrid for all 50 states, an all-electric version for California and Oregon and a hydrogen version for California. And so on and so forth. Which may be interesting if you re shopping or cross-shopping a certain model. But under no circumstances will the manufacturer or dealer reps talk about what else is coming down the pike. When will the mid-engine Corvette debut? No answer. A replacement for the 370Z? No answer. Oh they know. You know they know. They just don t go there. Despite the fact that, if you read the buff books and on-line car sites with any regularity, you re intimately familiar with the rumor mill. And so are they. They just won t say. I d love to see them drop some nuggets about something. You know they do it elsewhere - the buff books don t make it up. Right? Right? Ah well. If you re a gear-head, it s still a fun day out of the office. Even if you don t actually go anywhere. HG 22 HighGear HighGear Celebrating 60 Years

23 IN THE ZONE Rich Sanders PCA Zone 9 Representative SIRIUSLY???? A PCA Club Talk thread from my former region recently hosted an exchange of opinions about the best music for driving. It really got me to thinking. Looking out in the garage, I considered the connection of music to each vehicle. Let s see the vintage 1960 s British car has no radio. At least not one that works. Positive ground (they call it earth ) and transistors. No one to fix it. No way to buy a new one. No music. Not obvious why it is named Triumph. Next car, a topless Audi. Julie wants her 100+ Sirius channels so that she can listen to 6 of them. Good sound. Worth it. Next car, the Cayenne. A cruiser with an awesome sound system. It, too, has Sirius satellite radio, and for the same reasons as the Audi. Gets 100+ stations, I typically listen to six pre-sets as well. But they are MY six, not hers. Then there s the Cayman R. It actually came with a 2-month free subscription to Sirius. Siriusly??? Like many other Porsches, this one makes its own music- no radio required. Octaves of RPMs flowing out from under the glass right behind my head, connecting my ears to my hands, to my pedal feet and to the seat of my pants (so to speak). So the Sirius subscription offer sat unused for years. Then last summer I had a string of about 8 weeks that included taking the Cayman to Spokane, then Banff, then to the PCA Club Race in Colorado. THAT seemed to be the perfect time to use the trial subscription and then decide whether to pull the trigger on the subscription for those 6 pricey stations. Hardly used the radio through the whole trial period. Passed on the subscription. Then a few weeks ago, the Nord Stern region club talk thread got me to thinking about how certain commercial music can actually augment the driving experience in cars that already engage all of your senses. It s like going from 100% already, to a number that s WAY higher. The tunes that I came up with -and for me there are only a dozen or two- seem to be connected with some very deep memory or a particular road trip. Tunes in my list come from rock, jazz, pop, and even opera. To illustrate, Rider s on the Storm by The Doors is great for a rainy night drive. Golden Earring s Radar Love matches recalls an all night drive (in an MG-B with an Abarth exhaust). Pat Metheny s Last Train Home is perfect for getting anywhere fast. Sting s Stolen Car takes me back to commuting from Paris to Brussels at about 200 KPH. Pavarotti singing Nessum Dorma, just forces the driver to match the revs to the volume of the song itself. The last one is ticket bait for sure. Anyway, as I m about to head off in Red Hot Chili (the Cayman not Pepper, the Cayenne) for a road trip from Salt Lake City to Colorado Springs, I m thinking about creating a custom play list on my trusty old ipod. Just plug it into the USB port and crank it up! Pandora? Spotify? Sirius????? I ll pass, thank you. But I ll definitely be In the ZONE. What s on YOUR playlist??? Go to the Zone 9 Facebook page and join the thread!!! HG PORSCHE 356 & 911 PARTS PORSCHE CONSIGNMENTS & SALES FREE EVALUATIONS ARAPAHOE RD. BOULDER, CO Celebrating 60 Years HighGear 23

29 WHAT WE DO Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more. DRIVING EVENTS TOUR A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event. RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade. RALLY A rally is a competitive event in which contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type. Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies at least one of each type are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year. AUTOCROSS (AX) An autocross is a competition in which drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit. Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade. DRIVER EDUCATION (DE) A driver education event provides a safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habitforming! As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc. RMR hosts six DE s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike s Peak International Raceway tracks. CLUB RACE A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and heats (race sessions), often involving both sprint and endurance races. Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted First Ever Anywhere club race at Second Creek in Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up! RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend! NON-DRIVING EVENTS MEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening s program. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a slide show from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst. Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member! TECH SESSION A tech session is just what it sounds like a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, do-it-yourself procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by experienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear. RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the off months when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d Elegance A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to perfect condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation ( daily driver or full preparation or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as display only, for owners who wish to participate but not compete. RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year Celebrating 60 Years HighGear 29
