Each bull selling has passed Dr. Schultz s tests and is considered a satisfactory and potential breeder. All bulls are guaranteed as breeding bulls through the first breeding season. If a problem should arise, please contact any of the above numbers and we will offer a replacement bull of equal or greater quality. If a replacement bull is not available when needed, a credit will be issued for Mound Creek s 2018 Bull Sale. Genetic Conditions Genetic conditions discovered in Brangus cattle populations are simple recessive genetic conditions first reported in Brangus in Every animal in this sale noted as FREE is either free of any known genetic condition by pedigree or has been tested FREE for a potential condition. Animals in this catalog tested as a recessive carrier is noted with a C in that given condition prefix. Example would be a DDC noted animal is a tested carrier for that condition. Animals noted with a PC in their condition prefix is a potential carrier for that given condition and awaitng final test results to determine if FREE or a Carrier for a given condition. Final status on PC animals will available at sale time. This sale represents the lowest % of known carriers in the breed. As of this writing only three animals are known carriers in the entire sale. Herd Health Mound Creek Ranch is a Brucellosis Certified Free. All cattle have been inspected for health and fertility by our veterinarian, are current with annual vaccinations and come with interstate health papers. Cattle Load Out Cattle can be loaded out during and after the sale. We ask that any pot-sized loads wait until the conclusion of the sale. We will load out cattle on Saturday and Sunday and ask that each buyer inform the clerks of your desire to load out on Sunday along with an approximate time of arrival. 5 Tested by Time Tested By Time March is creeping closer and it s the last day of sale catalog production so it s time to pen a few thoughts relative to our love of this business and the passion we have felt for the 30 years in the registered seedstock side of our incredible industry. What an awesome ride! Ups and downs, high and lows, changing demands, changing faces. The constants are this amazing breed of cattle, the people we have treasured along the way, and our never-ending quest to make better cattle year in and year out. It s our passion. Standing in the middle of a group of Brangus mothers, looking through a good set calves, trying to figure that next good genetic move, watching the sun go down. Thirty years in the breed and still standing. Tested by time. Hosted more production Brangus sales than any active breeder in the country. Maybe more sales than any breeder in history. Tested by time. Three decades of relentless desire to make the best beef cattle in the country. Three decades of satisfaction from the stockmen who buy our bulls. Tested by time. We ve been in the business for a long time, and still here for what we believe are all the right reasons. Come see us March 17 and 18 and you will see those good reasons. We ll feed all you can eat, display the sale cattle in easy to review groups, and you can drive around the ranch. Always Moving Forward The previous four years we sent our entire set of bulls to a gain test center perfectly set up to identify measured feed efficiency. This was a costly project but one we required to identify genetic lines that would be more desirable in feed economy and overall nutritional efficiency. Over these four years we were reassured by the data from this test facility that our genetics would out perform any other programs in the breed, measure the best carcass information, and had the capacity to efficiently handle extreme environments. However, we just never could get satisfied that developing our bulls from post weaning in hard pan pens that measured 40 x 200 feet was best for their long term well being, and our bull buyer s needs The bull s in this year s sale have been developed drastically different than the previous four years. We changed our feeding program to a roughage intensive feed made up of 60% silage, 10% chopped hay, 16.5% DDG, 12% cracked corn, and 1.5% pellet balancer. The bulls are now gain tested in ten acre traps and hand fed daily to insure their exact amounts of feed consumed. This roughage intensive diet is a much cooler ration and therefore we have less measured numbers than in year s past. However, our EPD values are the best compared to any previous bulls ever sold in the breed, and our measures still continue to outclass our competitors. Additionally, these are our best bulls all time in terms of mobility, hoof and leg structure, soundness, docility, and body design. We are certain this year s bulls will be better suited for turnout on grass with their big bellies, wide bodies, sound wheels, and a gut that is more ready for a forage intensive environment. Intramuscular Fat (IMF): Measured as a percentage and used as a predictor of genetic marbling value. Individual Performance Birth Weight (BW): ACTUAL weight at birth, expressed in pounds. Weaning Weight (205): Weaning weight adjusted to a constant 205 days. Takes into account differences in days of age at weaning and age of dam. Weaning Weight (Ratio): A direct comparison of an individual to all other individuals in its weaning contemporary group. Expressed as a percentage with 100 being the average for the group. Yearling Weight (365): Yearling weight adjusted to a constant 365 days. Takes into account differences in days of age at yearling time, average daily gain post-weaning, and adjusted 205 weight. Yearling Weight (Ratio): A direct comparison of an individual to all other individuals in its yearling contemporary group. Expressed as a percentage with 100 being the average for the group. Scrotal Circumference (SC): Testicular circumference, measured in centimeters, and adjusted to 365 days of age. Weaning or Yearling Weight Per Day of Age (WWDA and YWDA): In pounds and calculated by dividing the actual weaning or yearling yearling weight taken on weigh day by the number of days of age on weigh day. Generation Generation: Denotes the number of generations a Registered Brangus animal is from being produced by mating Enrolled or Percentage Brahman and Angus genetics to produce the first blend of 3/8 Brahman and 5/8 Angus. A first generation Brangus will have a designation of 1 and be the first mating to achieve a recorded 3/8 x 5/8 blend of Angus and Brahman. Those animals given a 2 will be two generations removed from those blended or enrolled parents, etc. Those animals given a UB1 designation are Ultrablack animals and are the result of blending a Registered Brangus with an Enrolled Angus. Those animals given a UB2 status are also Ultrablacks and the result of blending a UB1 with a Registered Brangus. Please note when a UB2 animal is mated to a registered Brangus the resulting offspring will be given an R in their recording number and be considered as a Registered animal rather than an Ultrablack. Expected Progeny Difference Expected Progeny Difference (EPD): The genetic predictor of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the breed database. EPD Accuracy: Since all bulls in this catalog are non-parents, their accuracies are the lowest calculated by our national sire evaluation program. Every EPD reported is either current or an interim EPD. An EPD noted with a P is a pedigree EPD which is the average of the parent s EPDs. Birth Weight EPD (BW): In pounds, predicts calf size and calving ease. Weaning Weight EPD (WW): Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of an animal s ability to transmit weaning growth to its progeny. Yearling Weight EPD (YW): Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of an animal s ability to transmit yearling growth to its progeny. Milk EPD (Milk): Predicts a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Maternal & Growth EPD (TM): Expressed in pounds and used as a genetic predictor of weaning weight taken by blending a combination of maternal milk and weaning weight EPD values. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC): Measured in centimenters at yearling time, predicts testicular size. Maternal Calving Ease (CEM): Predicts the average ease with which a sire s daughters will calve unassisted as first calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires and expressed as a percentage. Ribeye Area (REA): Expressed in square inches, is a predictor of transmitting ability of ribeye size and overall muscle mass which is a key component in USDA yield grades.
