Since 2007 we ve marketed our bulls in the Breeding for the Future production sale co-hosted with Wilkinson Farms Simmentals. As both of our programs and family partner numbers continue to grow, we felt it was time that we have separate sales and have decided to hold our annual sale at our ranch. We have appreciated the opportunity to work with the Schlenker family and have developed cherished friendships and a deep respect for their family and the Simmental cattle they produce. May God continue to bless their family as well as their business endeavors. The bulls offered this year are our most impressive set yet! We have a larger group to select from and many new outcross matings! While we still have an extensive lineup of purebred Simmental bulls, we have expanded our SimAngus selections. By heavily utilizing embryo transplant, we ve been able to propagate progeny from our top cow families with many full and half brothers selling this year. New sire groups, which include CDI Hometown, TJ Power Grid, and SVS Captain Morgan, are all outcross genetics, yet come from proven pedigrees. Along with our spring born bull crop we are debuting Age Advantage 18 month-old bulls, in which 95% are direct ET sons out of our top donor dams. We can t wait for you to evaluate them. Along with being in a new location at C Diamond Ranch in Neil and Carmen s heated garage, the sale will also have a new format! This will be a video auction with the bulls being penned right outside for convenient viewing. No bulls will go through a ring. We hope you have a chance to visit the ranch before sale day to go through the bulls. We do offer a $100 sale day credit towards the purchase of a bull if you visit the ranch between Jan 1st and Feb 22nd. Videos of all the bulls will be available online in early February on dvauction.com. These videos are a valuable tool, along with the catalog, to help become familiar with the sale day offering. We work with PNC Feeds of Hebron, ND for balancing the ration. Delivery: The fall bulls will be delivered shortly after the sale. Yearling bulls will be fed for free, semen tested and delivered after April 1st. Bulls will be delivered free of charge up to 250 miles from the ranch. We will work with the buyer to arrange the most economical delivery for distances beyond 250 miles. Any cattle selling to Canada will be delivered to the nearest ND/CAN border crossing facility. Buyers will be responsible for any costs associated with testing/clearance for export.

4 NEW THIS YEAR Docility Scores (Doc): New this year you will see a docility score for each animal. We use a scoring system from 1-6 with lower scores indicating calmer, gentler cattle: 1 Docile; 2 Restless; 3 Nervous; 4 Flighty; 5 Aggressive; 6 Very Aggressive. Most of the bulls will fall in the 1 or 2 category, with an occasional 3. Anything above a 3 is automatically culled from the bull pen. Please use this as a relative gauge for your operation. If you have a lot of help from your family or inexperienced workers while working with your cattle, we recommend buying 1 and 2 scoring cattle. 3 s are completely manageable but have at times shown to be more nervous. These scores are based on our daily interactions with the bull to date. Keep in mind, as an animal gets older, or with different handling, its attitude can change. We are investing in the latest technology available to provide you with the most accurate EPD s possible. This technology improves the accuracy of EPDs on yearling bulls as if they were an older bull with progeny proof! You will see Genomic Enhanced EPDs at the beginning of the footnotes of the bulls that have genomic enhanced EPD profiles. 4

5 BELOW IS A QUICK REFERENCE TO AN EXPLANATION OF EPD S: Expected Progeny Differences EPD s are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using the EPD differences between two sires EPD s represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. (Listed below are the units ASA EPD s are expressed in). (Average EPD s are on the bottom of the percentile table above ) Calving Ease (CE) percentage of unassisted births when used on heifers. Birth Weight (BW) pounds of birth weight. Weaning Weight (WW) pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW) pounds of yearling weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) percentage of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Maternal Milk (MM) pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW) pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Stayability (Stay) percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Carcass Weight (CW) pounds of carcass weight. Yield Grade (YG) yield grade score. Yield grade is an indication of the yield of red meat within a carcass. It is calculated by using several factors including 1) fat thickness, 2) C DIAMOND SIMMENTALS AVERAGE CE BW WW YW ADG MCE MM MWW DOC YG CW MARB BF REA API TI kidney, pelvic and heart fat. 3) hot carcass weight 4) rib eye area. A ( ) EPD is better. Marbling (MRB) marbling score. Indexes: The last two columns in the EPD section are fairly new to the Simmental breed, but interesting, they are $ indexes. Though EPD s allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That s where $ indexes blend EPD s & economics to estimate an animal s overall impact on your bottom line. All Purpose Index: (API) It is exactly what it says, all purpose. This index includes every trait that can be calculated: calving ease, pounds at weaning and yearling, keeping replacements back, milking ability and stayability, then the calf crop. It took into consideration, some being retained as replacements, then the rest being fed out and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): This index is to be used if all calves are going to a feedlot. It evaluates a sire only for use on mature cows with all calves put on feed and sold grade and yield. No other factors were figured in. Using API and TI: First determine which index to use. If you re breeding heifers and keeping replacements, use API. 32 AGE ADVANTAGE DIVISION For the first time, we are excited to offer 18 month old Age Advantage bulls for your consideration. We started a fall calving program in 2014 by purchasing Trans Ova recips pregnant with our own embryos and the following lots are the results of that first fall calf crop. These bulls are impressive and are ready to go to work! They have been developed in a way to ensure longevity and are ready for heavy service. All bulls selling are virgin bulls and will be semen tested before the sale. Delivery of the fall bulls will begin very shortly after sale day.
