5 Features/Benefits (cont) Engineered for durability and longevity Designed for 8-in. total positive static pressure capability, Uni- FLEX39 can easily meet your design conditions while maintaining structural integrity. Panels of 6-gage galvanized steel and double-wall service doors will hold their shape through years of operation. Internally-mounted motors and drives operate in a clean environment and are protected from humidity, giving longer life to motor and belts. Belts and drives are factory aligned and tensioned. Factory run-testing and balancing of fan at maximum operating rpm ensures vibration-free performance at your actual specified fan rpm. Fans are balanced before and after unit assembly to ensure smooth, trouble-free operation. Double-wall galvanized steel sloped drain pan provides a dry condensate drain pan and complies with ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers) Standard 62 for Indoor Air Quality. Optional stainless steel liner is available. Special outdoor-use modifications are available for pier or slab mount (not curb mount) applications. UniFLEX39 air handlers are designed for indoor use, but units modified for outdoor applications are available by special order. Outdoor units have sloped tops, gasketing between all sections, rear air inlets, and front air discharges. Factory-installed controls are not available for outdoor use, and other restrictions may apply. Review all outdoor applications with your Carrier sales representative. Convenient installation The small footprint of the unit contributes to application and installation flexibility, ensuring economical use of building space. Accessibility is required from only one side of the unit, increasing location options. This may result in floor space savings of 20% over competitors units. Shipping options add to the versatility of the UniFLEX39. You have the choice of single-piece shipment (unit up to 40 ft in length) or shipment in sections to meet your rigging needs. Rugged, 0-gage steel lifting lugs assure safe rigging and placement of unit. INTERNALLY-MOUNTED MOTORS AND DRIVES ON SOLID-STEEL SHAFTS INTERNAL ISOLATION OF FAN ASSEMBLY 4

6 Features/Benefits (cont) Internal isolation of the fan assembly reduces vibration and eliminates the need for isolation of unit at time of installation. Fan and motor bearings are mounted on a galvanized steel frame, which is isolated from the outer casing with factory-installed spring isolators and vibration absorbent fan discharge seal. Easy service and maintenance Access sections with full height, double-wall hinged doors can be provided wherever you require them, for convenient cleaning and maintenance of the unit. Extended lubrication lines enable complete servicing of fan from one side. Exterior lubrication fittings are also available. Slide-out coils make servicing easy. Half-length coils are available. Because headers are on both sides of the coil assembly, half the assembly can be removed from either side, or both halves of an assembly can be removed from the same side. Optimum performance High-efficiency airfoil and forward-curved fans minimize air turbulence and avoid surging and unbalanced operation, thus cutting operating expenses. Exclusive Carrier coil surface results in efficient heat transfer. Since less heating and cooling fluid are circulated, pumping costs are reduced. Inlet guide vanes maximize horsepower savings in VAV (variable air volume) applications by deflecting air toward the direction of fan rotation. Rugged pillow-block bearings are rated at 200,000 hours average life. Optional bearings with 400,000 hours average life are available (sizes 32-92). Minimum -in. thick, 2-lb density fiberglass duct liner is securely fastened to casing for reliable performance. Other insulation options include -in. thick, 3-lb density fiberglass duct liner and 2-in. thick, 2-lb density fiberglass duct liner. Casing construction options include double-walls with 2-in. thick fiberglass, galvanized steel exterior, and either galvanized steel or perforated aluminum interior. Provisions for indoor air quality requirements Upstream and downstream filtration flexibility UniFLEX39 component flexibility provides unrestricted selection of filtration options. In addition to the final filter section desired for hospital applications, a variety of filter sections are available for placement wherever required by your particular job. Optional 20-gage galvanized steel liner keeps the airstream clean and provides a solid, washable surface that is easy to maintain. Optional perforated 6-gage aluminum liner is available. Perforations allow the insulation to absorb sound, thus improving the quality of the indoor-air space. Aluminum material prevents interior corrosion that is often a problem on perforated galvanized steel liners. Sloped drain pan removes condensate completely, eliminating build-up of stagnant water during shutdown periods, so that the air handler remains free of odors and bacteria. Optional stainless-steel drain pan liner is available to provide an extremely easy-to-clean, sloped surface from which water will drain completely. Extensive coil selection UniFLEX39 air handlers have a wide selection of coils to meet your application needs. All UniFLEX39 coils have Carrier s high-performance coil surface; the coil tubes are mechanically expanded into the fins for improved fin bonding and peak thermal transfer. The coils have standard galvanized-steel or optional stainless-steel casings, and are available with right- or left-hand connections. Water coils have inlets at the bottom and outlets at the top, to ensure counterflow. FULL-HEIGHT ACCESS DOORS FANS FEATURE INLET GUIDE VANES, PILLOW-BLOCK BEARINGS, AND SOLID-STEEL SHAFTS 5 95

7 Chilled water coils The coil headers are constructed from Schedule 40 steel pipe to match your piping system and are precisely sized to minimize water pressure loss. The coils are manufactured of 2-in. OD copper tubes with aluminum plate fins (8,, or 4 fins per in.). Copper fins and headers are optional. Large and medium face area coils, as well as a bypass face area coil, are available in 4, 6, 8, or 0 rows. Male pipe thread connections are standard; Victaulic grooved connections are also available. Direct expansion coils The direct expansion coils offer design flexibility plus optimization of coil performance. Coils are available in large or medium face area, with 4, 6, or 8 rows. The tubes are of 2-in. OD copper with aluminum-plate fins, and 8,, or 4 fins per inch. Copper fins are available as an option. Choose from half, full, or double circuits. For full design flexibility, all direct expansion coils have at least 2 splits; you can match a coil with one or 2 compressors for independent refrigerant systems. Hot water coils The Carrier line of hot water (U-bend) coils is designed to provide heating capability for a complete range of applications, at a working pressure of 75 psig at 400 F. Hot water coils are offered in one, 2, or 4 rows, with fin spacings of 8,, or 4 fins per inch. Coils have aluminum plate fins with copper tubes; copper fins are optional. Hot water coils are available as small, medium, or bypass face area coils. Steam coils The UniFLEX39 inner distributing tube (IDT) steam coils are designed for a working pressure of 75 psig at 400 F. The plate-fin steam coil is available in one row, with 6, 9, or 2 aluminum fins per in., and one-in. OD copper tubes. (Optional copper fins are available.) Steam coils are available as small, medium, or bypass face area coils, and are sloped to drain condensate. Steam coils are especially suited to applications where sub-freezing air enters the air-handling apparatus, or where uniformity of leaving-air temperature is required. Electric heat coil The UniFLEX39 electric heat coils may be ordered for factory installation into the electric heat section, which is equipped with full-support slide tracks for easy installation or service. All electric heaters are suitable for both constant volume (CV) or VAV applications. Optional air mixer When positioned immediately downstream of a mixing box or filter mixing box, the air mixer (AMX) section blends air streams with different temperatures to within a range of 6 F. The AMX prevents air stratification and ensures that exiting blended air has a uniform velocity. The blended air helps to prevent coil freeze-up and equalize coil discharge temperatures. Optional auxiliary motor and drive Auxiliary motors and drives are available on all larger units (sizes 32-92). The auxiliary motors can be the same horsepower rating or a lower rating than the primary motor. Auxiliary motors and drives that have the same ratings as the primary motors on the same unit provide motor redundancy in the event of a belt or motor loss. Auxiliary motors and drives with lower ratings than a unit s primary drive have several uses. When partial system loads are frequent, primary and auxiliary high-efficiency motors with separate starters and disconnects can be used in place of 2-speed motors. The auxiliary motor and drive can provide energy savings, reduced installation costs, and increased availability of replacement motors and electrical equipment. An auxiliary motor with a lower rating than the primary motor can also serve as a backup when emergency power operates the unit. The smaller motor and lower capacity reduce generator loads during emergencies when full power may not be available. For example, a hospital might use an emergency generator and its building control system to run the auxiliary motor and direct air to critical care areas. AUXILIARY MOTOR AND DRIVE, SIZES AIR MIXER PREVENTS STRATIFICATION 95 6

8 Features/Benefits (cont) Product Integrated Controls (PIC) Carrier s proven direct digital controls are available for all sizes of the UniFLEX39 air handler. The Product Integrated Controls function independently or as part of the Carrier Comfort Network (CCN). Indoor air quality (IAQ) functions provide monitoring and control of temperature, ventilation rates, building pressurization, and single-point or comparative CO 2 and VOC (volatile organic compound) levels. Night purge and constant ventilation rates (VAV applications) are also available. Optional computer interface is provided for remote PIC configuration using a Building Supervisor. Local interface device supplied for unitmounted configuration. A keypad input device and alphanumeric display are standard on each PIC unit, or an optional portable device can be used for several units. Factory-mounted and tested actuators are available for dampers, fan inlet guide vanes, and water valves; all are controlled by the PIC section. Factory assembly and wiring of PIC section and all controls minimizes installation time; the wiring and control panel are fully contained within the unit. Control options include differential enthalpy, electric heat staging, mixed-air low limit, humidification, dehumidification, fan tracking (VAV), smoke control, and filter maintenance. Self-monitoring diagnostics provide an on-board check of overall unit operation including all control modules and sensors (inputs) and control devices (outputs). Quick Test on-board software program allows service technicians to test all inputs and outputs of the PIC and to easily commission the unit. Local and remote alarm monitoring can detect a wide variety of system conditions. Occupied/unoccupied time of day scheduling is by an internal 365-day clock which provides 8 different time periods per week. Holiday scheduling provides 8 userdefined holidays. Heating coil valve control of hydronic heating coil (steam or hot water) to maintain return-air temperature on VAV units or room air temperature on CV units, to occupied and unoccupied set points. Electric heater control is available for up to 8 stages of electric heat. Cooling coil valve controls a chilled water valve to maintain supply-air temperature (VAV) or room temperature (CV) to an occupied or unoccupied set point. Direct-Expansion (DX) cooling coil control for up to 8 standard stages of cooling. Mixed air damper control controls the outside air, return air and exhaust air dampers, maintaining the room temperature (CV) and supply-air temperature (VAV). Nighttime free cooling starts the fan during the unoccupied hours to precool the space using outside air. Adaptive optimal start/morning warmup ensures that the heating/cooling temperature set points are achieved at the time of occupancy. Morning warmup initiates a heat cycle with no outside air to efficiently preheat the space. Adaptive optimal stop (constant volume applications) allows the occupied space temperature to drift to an extended occupied set point during the last portion of the occupied time period. Duct static pressure control is achieved by modulating the inlet guide vanes (IGV) or a fan motor speed controller in VAV applications. The IGV have a spring return feature to automatically close in the event of power failure or fan shutdown. Fan overpressurization safety switch protects supply duct from overpressurization on VAV units. Two-level demand limiting can be enabled with load shed commands from the Carrier Comfort Network. Unoccupied set point scheduling controls the space temperature to an unoccupied cooling and heating set point. Heat interlock relay enables VAV units to open or close room terminals during periods of heating. 10 Flex-Select This catalog has been designed to provide the quickest and most accurate means of selecting and specifying a central station air-handling unit: Carrier s new Flex-Select procedure. Unlike previous conventional methods, our Flex-Select method starts with the information you have required airflow and preferred coil face velocity and directs you to the proper unit size and corresponding page for dimensional data. The dimensional information presented in the UniFLEX39 engineer s selection guide is unique. It provides the required layout information for an entire unit on a single page, eliminating the need to refer to several pages when specifying a unit. All the available components are listed conveniently on facing pages, with corresponding nominal weights. Since each set of facing pages is dedicated to a unit size, the chance of error in reading dimensions is reduced. To use this new and improved method of specifying central station air-handling units, refer to the charts on pages 0 and. Carrier s computer selection and performance programs provide exact coil and performance data certified to the ARI 40 and 430 standards. In addition to standard outputs, the programs provide coil moisture carryover information. When information from the computer selection programs is not available, use the following general guidelines for velocity limits to avoid moisture carryover. MOISTURE CARRYOVER LIMITS (Fpm) FINS PER IN. ALUMINUM FINS COPPER FINS
