45 ACCESSORIES / NUTS Ball nut units pre-loaded When using a single screw, between the balls and the rolling points there is an axial backlash. In many cases it is necessary to get rid of this backlash in order to increase positioning accuracy and rigidity. Simply by pre-loading two ball nuts we eliminate such backlash and we reduce the axial distortion produced by the load. Pre-loading should be indicated by the customer according to the work features, although we recommend values close to 1/3 of the average load Fm. When this value is not indicated, the ball screws are supplied with a standardised pre-load equal to 10% of the dynamic load C for each assembly. Two types of pre-load directions are used. In the one for traction both ball screws are separated giving way to a tensile force on the screw. The increase in temperature reduces the pre-load. During compression, the screws get together and therefore pre-load increases as well as the screw s temperature. We supply pre-loading washers cut in two parts for both types making it easier to readjust the pre-loading and thus avoiding to dismount the screw which is always a delicate operation.
