3 Steel Rollers Lorbrand carry a large range of rollers to suit most conveying applications. This enables the customer to receive the most cost-effective solution. Installations include coal, gold, platinum, diamond and copper mines, shiploading terminals and long high capacity conveyors throughout the world. The centrifical self-cleaning action of the seals ensure that bearings are able to achieve the design life. The grease-free sealing system results in much lower friction values than conventional designs. 5 Seal Design Primary Sealing The secret to the success of the primary sealing area lies in the fact that dirt, which enters, is ALLOWED TO ESCAPE. The reinforced plastic seal collects dirt and flings it radially outward due to centrifugal force (3-9 times gravitational). Most roll manufacturers fail to realize that dirt WILL penetrate the primary sealing area and that the only way to expel this dirt is by centrifugal force. Most primary seals are thus dirt-catchers! Secondary Sealing Dirt, which enters secondary sealing area, is again propelled outwards by centrifugal force. All sealing surfaces are clean and free from contact and do not require packing with grease. The sealing arrangement is so designed that water drains out of the seal when the idler is stationary. Most secondary seals on the market are of the labyrinth type and centrifugal force actually helps keep dirt in the sealing area where it can work its way to the bearing. Bearing Sealing Deep groove, greased for life bearings complete with seals on both sides are recommended instead of cheaper alternatives. The bearing seals form the final barrier against dirt ingress especially rust particles, which are formed due to condensation inside the shell tube.

6 Impact and Rubber Disc Rollers Impact and rubber disc rolls consist of steel reinforced rubber impact discs press fitted onto a conventional steel roller body. Each rubber disc is positively located and there is no possibility of rubbers moving due to impact loads. Spacers and end stops are not required. Apart from the rubber discs, the same components and seals are used for the steel rollers. 7 Roller Selection The following procedure shows the step-by-step procedure in choosing the correct roller series. The selection procedures ensures that angular shaft deflection at the bearing due to load is kept below 7 minutes (2 milliradians) and a minimum theoretical bearing life of 20,000 hours is achieved when operating within the recommended speed range. Determine Load per Idler Station Load per station (kg) = S (W b + Q /3.6V) Where: Determine Maximum Static Force Experienced by The Carrying and Return Roll Determine the participation factor from the table below. The participation factor is the fraction of the load taken by the roller which experiences the greatest load versus the total station load. Station Type Participation Factor (p) S = spacing between idler stations 0.6 W b = weight of belt per running metre (kg/m) (see pg 25 for estimate masses) Q = capacity (tons/hr) These factors are valid for A x /A f 0.8 where A x is the actual cross-sectional area of the material conveyed. 1 V = belt speed (m/s) A x = Q /3.6 V For idler return stations, Q = O This calculated load can be used to determine the appropriate CEMA rating (see pg 23) = material density (kg/m3) (see material characteristics on page 24) A f = cross sectional area of full belt (see material characteristics on page 25) The maximum force on the roller is thus: Roller Options F = ps (W b + Q /3.6V) Outside of our steel range of rollers we manufacture a complete range of idlers in the following configurations; Aluminium Composite/HDPE Nylon - with FRAS Option Polyurethane Disk Return Rolls HDPE Sleeved - Aluminium and Steel rolls Hollow Shaft - rolls between 700mm & 1700mm face (in any of the above variantions)

8 Roller Selection Select the Roller Series Read off the roller in question (pg26) and refer to the load charts (pg26), choose a roller series, which gives a higher allowable load than the calculated load. The roller should also operate within the speed range indicated below. It is generally more economical to choose a higher shaft series roller than to use stepped shafts. This is especially the case for troughing rollers. Return rollers are often manufactured with stepped shafts so that the same roller series can be used on installation as the troughing rollers. The percentage cost increase per roller is also lower for return rollers. Roller DIA (mm) Maximum Belt Speed (m/s) For stepped shafts, multiply the allowable load by the load factor (W) obtained from the graph on page 27. This will give the modified allowable load for a shaft diameter (d 2 ) between bearings. Note the available d 2 range indicated on the graph. The actual load should not exceed the first figure on every chart. These values represent loads which will give a theoretical bearing life of between 20,000 and 40,000 hours when operating within the recommended speed range. Before making a final decision, consideration should also be given to the effect of the roller diameter on running and start-up friction. The larger the roller diameter, the lower the friction. This will result in savings on power consumption and possibly also on power transmission equipment in the case of new conveyors. A larger Diameter also results in longer roller life due to a slower rotational speed. The average break-away (start up) friction value for each roller series is available for designers. 9 Notes on Selection Procedure 1. To calculate the bearing life, L10h (hrs) use the formula: L10h = (1,000,000/60n) (C/P) 3 Where: c = dynamic load rating (N), see page 14 P n = load on bearing (N) = 9.8 F/2 (F in kg) = rotational speed (min -1 ) = 60V/3.14xD D is the roll diameter (m) 2. This selection procedure ensure that theoretical bearing life is above 20,000 hours and is dependant on the bearing load, type of bearing and rotational speed. 3. Additional loads due to belt deviation and impact are not considered. Lump sizes above 350mm combined with material densities above 1,600 kg/m 3 require an additional factor for the impact condition. This selection procedure is also not valid for impact roller selection, Consult Advanced Conveyor Technology. 4. Consideration should be given to the two wall thickness options available for the 127 and 152 diameter rolls. An increase in wall thickness will be an advantage in installations where the failure mode is likely to be shell wear.

10 Examples Example 1 Coal transported at 3/ms at a rate of 1,400 tph. Belt width is 1,200mm. 3 roll, 35 troughing idlers at 1.5 meter spacing. 2 roll, 10 return idlers at 3 meter spacing F = ps (W b +Q/3.6 V), A x /A f = 0.162/0.177 = therefore p is valid. F trough = 0.68 x 1.5 (15+ 1,400/3.6 x 3) = 148 kg Face length = 450 mm Allow. load (ser 20) = 83 kg (not suitable) Allow. load (ser 25) = 175 kg F = return = 0.6 x 3.0 (15) = 27 kg Face length = 635 mm Allow. load (ser 20) = 56 kg Allow. load (ser 25) = 118 kg Choose series 25 with RS bearings with either 101 or 127 diameter. A choice in the 127 diameter roll, will result in two advantages: 1. A longer roller life 2. Lower power consumption due to low friction Example 2 Wheat conveyed at a grain terminal, 900 tph is required. Design for a full 1,200m belt. Use, 3 roll, 45 troughing idlers at 1.0 metre spacing and single roll return idlers at 3.0 metre spacing. From material characteristics table (pg 24), angle of surcharge = 0 and kg/m 3 From cross-sectional areas charts for full belts (pg 25), A x = A f = = Q/3.6 V, there fore V = 2.5 m/s. (required) F trough = 0.72 x 1.0 ( /3.6 x 2.5) = 79 kg Face length = 450 mm Allow. load (ser 20) = 83 kg F = return = 1 x 3.0 (10) = 30 kg Face length = 1298 mm Allow. load (ser 20) = 26 kg (not suitable) Try a stepped shaft of 22 mm (d 2 ) Load factor = 1.45 Allow. load (ser 20/22) = 38 kg Choose series 20 rollers with 89 or 101 diameter tube. Specify a 22 mm shaft for the return rollers.
