3 ABOUT ME Hey, I'm Connor Hinchliffe a young graphic designer from Brisbane. I have a love of poster design no matter the situation but in particular for the music industry. I also have strengths in magazine and product packaging, but I m not afraid to dabble in most forms of graphic design. 4 EASTWICK Tour Poster This tour poster was developed for Julia Jacklin s Australian & New Zealand tour. Which coincided with the single release for her single Eastwick. The assessment piece required the use of developing a creative piece of type. Hence I created a custom piece of typography for the word Eastwick. This was heavily influenced by the Alfresco typeface with the a new upper case E, which the rest of the word was built in mind of. The painting developed for the background was heavily inspired and designed to tie in with the music video and existing imagery around the single. The blues help to compliment the typography making it really pop from the page. The aesthetic feel of the piece was designed to replicate the songs sad but upbeat vibe. I achieve this though a number of elements it the design. The colours that I chose to do the background was two shades of blue, as blue is perceived as a sad emotional colour, although not too dark to maintain the upbeat requirement. I hand built the Eastwick word to be the upbeat, exciting element of the design that jumps out of the page. Which the script like typeface and slight drop shadow achieves all of these desired effects. 3 Connor Hinchliffe Design.indd 4

6 DEEP GREEN Tour Poster This Deep Green poster developed for Marika Hackman s United Kingdom tour. Deep Green is a single by Marika Hackmans in which the tour is named. The concept was built to match the aesthetic of the Eastwick poster but achieve a different feel, to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability within similar design concepts. The layout of the design has been edited to display the information of the piece in a grid, making the information easily read. I went for an opposing aesthetic feel for this design to compliment the song. Deep Green is a more grungy and dark feeling piece. This is largely achieved through the background artwork, the dark greens and texture justify this aesthetic and links well with the song title. The Typography in this piece, works in two very different aspects. The Deep Green works as an anchor for the piece, by being the stand out element. It succeeds at this through; spacing, hierarchy although most importantly the script style of type contrast with the rest of the type really helps to pull the eye to the design. 5 Connor Hinchliffe Design.indd 6

8 BEACH HOUSE Event Poster This Beach House poster was developed for their Red Rocks Amphitheatre. I wanted the design to be familiar to the Beach House audience, be unique at the same time. The top circle design was developed around different elements of previous Beach House albums: The cherry red colour was selected to match the Red Rocks Venue and the depression cherry album cover. The zebra patterned ring was a combination of the a similar zebra pattern as the Teen Dream album with the circle and square layout of the B-Sides and Rarities. Again familiar but unique. The typography used was Akzidenz-Grotesk BQ to be close to the Depression Cherry s Trade Gothic typeface. Working well with displaying the event information and the Beach House name. 1. 10 AGORAPHOBIA Magazine article This magazine article has been developed on the topic of a phobia. The phobia chosen was Agoraphobia; the fear of open or crowded places. The task required self sourced photography. I chose busy, popular locations around Brisbane such as King George Square and the Wheel of Brisbane, to familiarize the audience letting them relate with the article. The colours photoshoped into each of the black and white photography allows the people to be highlighted in the design. These highlighted people gives a demonstration of the alarms a person with Agoraphobia feel. The difficulties and anxiety felt when in crowded areas. 12 GILL SANS Typeface Poster This poster was developed to showcase the Gill Sans typeface. The poster also contains basic information on the origins of the typeface. The layout of the design displays the information separately so that each individual element can be easily read. The prominent g was built to be the piece s eye catching feature. The g is built from the use of the upper case and lower case Gills Sans alphabet. This work effectively to create the iconic Gill Sans lower case g, as it is both accurate to the typeface and aesthetically interesting. 11 Connor Hinchliffe Design.indd 12
