8 DRUM HANDLING GUIDE The right way to transport, handle and move drums Cables should be handled with great care while transportating. Usually these cables are transported by winding them around the drum like reels. These drums are convenient to transport only if handled the right way. These drums have battens on it. These battens are thick enough to remain unbroken. If a cable weighs more than 4 tons, there are chances of the batten getting damaged, causing harm to the cable wires, which may incur additional and expensive repair costs. Therefore, some basic guidelines need to be followed to handle the drums correctly. Keep the drum upright Always ensure that the drums are stored and moved in an upright position only. This makes the mobility of drums convenient and prevents the cables from hazards. It also avoids the cable layers from getting entangled. Keep the cable protected until it is used. Roll the drums in the direction of arrows only The cables are wound in a particular direction. Hence, the drums must be rolled in the direction of arrows only to avoid the unwinding of cables. But the drums should not be rolled for more than 5 meters of distance in the indicated direction. If it is rolled beyond the 5 m limit, the cable wind will become too tight and cut off the rope holding the cable end. This will deform the cable and make it unfit for use. the cable head should not be pinched between wire and drum. Let the drums not touch each other and stay well balanced. Necessary precautions must be taken while lowering the drum from a height. When the drum is lifted and not unloaded due to handling reasons, do not rest the drum on the deck. Handling with fork-lift truck The fork lift truck should have forks longer than the width of the drum, so that the lagging is not damaged. Different widths of drums should be painted on the forks enabling the operator to select the correct position for the drum size. While moving the drum, tilt the truck mast so that the drum remains in the fork and the points don t touch the ground. The forks should be raised cm above the ground. If failed to raise the fork at a sufficient height, the drum is likely to fall. Don t release the drum until the truck has stopped completely. Don t push the drum with the truck. Leave sufficient room between each drum so that the fork doesn t damage the drum. Caution while nailing If the planks need to be refastened, the nailing should be done in the middle of the drum flange. Make sure that the labels or anything similar, if attached to the drums with nails do not touch the cables. Lift the drum without damage While lifting the drum, use a shaft through the centre of the drum and a wire spreader or a long a wire can also be used. Ensure that the wire is long enough so that the sides of the drum are not damaged. Also,

9 DRUM HANDLING GUIDE The right way to transport, handle and move drums Secure the drums firmly The drums have curvy edges which enables them to roll. It is in a very unstable state because its central section is vacant and the whole weight rests on its peripheral section. Hence, it becomes difficult to balance the drums. Use drags to prevent drums from rolling during storage. Large drums should be lifted from the base onto triangular or square edges. The wedges should be positioned by the flanges or the full width of drum. Sideways movement is eliminated by planks attached to the sides of the drum. In case smaller drums are placed between larger ones, each drum has to be supported separately to prevent damages. Fasten the drums firmly The drum is fastened to the base through the centre hole or across the flanges with wires or ropes. Avoid stacking of drums Stacking of drums should be avoided. In case the drums need to be stacked, same size of drums should be positioned exactly on top of each other. If smaller drums are stacked on larger drums, plank of the size of the larger drum should be placed in between the two drums to protect the flanges. Above method is recommended even when same size drums are stacked. Secure drums to be transported A combination of wedges and transportation support should be used and tied down front and rear to prevent movement of drums. Higher drums should be tied in side direction as high as possible. The drums loaded first should rest against the front board (observing shaft weight). If the last drum doesn t lean against the end board or the board is not strong enough, the drum must be secured. Don t drop drums The drum must not be dropped from the vehicle. The drum should be lifted either by winch of fork-lift truck as mentioned in lifting the drum. If above mentioned equipment is not available, best possible conditions must be created to unload the drums from the vehicle. A platform of the same height as the vehicle or a point in the terrain will guarantee that no damage will occur. Make sure that while unloading, the drum doesn t strike another drum to avoid damage.
