2 Introducing Challenger s new generation of Special Application tractors Challenger s commitment to constant improvement has resulted in the world debut of the new MT800C Series of rubber tracked Special Application tractors. Complete all-rounders ideal for heavy groundwork operations, these machines now set totally new standards of comfort, convenience and control for the operator. At the same time, their prodigious work-rate, fuel efficiency and reliability make them extremely cost-effective to run, and provide owners with an excellent return on investment. Versatility is a key feature of the MT800C Series, with four models in the 430 hp to 570 hp range capable of handling a wide range of groundwork tasks with ease even in the most demanding conditions. These include towing up to three scrapers on the specially designed 9,000 kg load capacity hitch plate, ripping & discing and hauling (rollers, water tanks, bowsers and other equipment). Ultimately, Challenger s legendary CAT heritage in the field of rubber tracked tractor technology is never far away and still evident under the bonnet, where the latest generation of low emission Caterpillar engines provide all the awesome power you need for the job. 3 Powerful economic arguments MT800C special application As the construction and civil engineering sectors become more and more competitive, the need to lower costs while increasing productivity and maintaining a high quality of work has become essential for continued profitability. A growing number of businesses are finding that tractors working with scrapers require a considerably smaller investment than conventional earthmoving combinations. Studies prove that, in many situations, tracked tractor and scraper combinations are amongst the most cost effective earthmoving solutions available, offering a significant cost saving compared with traditional earthmoving set-ups. This is because two Challenger MT800C tractors and four scrapers can, in many situations, replace multiple machinery & equipment required for traditional earth moving roles. The ultimate in operator comfort within the spacious new cab, with simplified controls and layout promoting optimum machine performance. 16F/4R speed powershift transmissions designed and built by Caterpillar specifically for tracked tractors to ensure perfect engine harmony. Machine System Protection Strategy (MSPS) protects the driveline from operator errors. With the longest wheelbase in its power class, the refined MobilTrac frame assembly incorporates an in-line reaction arm for improved belt tension and greater chassis stability. OptiRide suspension provides the smoothest ride over the roughest terrain, now with tough, new Poly midwheel and full-length debris deflector options to reduce wear in extreme environments. 6 The new C Series cab Adjustment Knob A choice of two comfort levels begins with the standard seat, which itself has a higher specification than many so-called deluxe seats, with 10 adjustment options and passive air suspension. This ergonomicallydesigned seat has many additional features to enhance comfort levels for the operator, including lumbar support, exchangeable cushions, swivel and a sculptured backrest for optimum comfort when turning in the seat. The deluxe VRS seat features the award-winning Vibration Reduction System and includes an extendable headrest, heated seat and back, together with the option of leather cushions. Operators will also appreciate the new cab ventilation system s improved airflow, as well as better night visibility, thanks to the new front light bar arrangement. The Tractor Management Centre (TMC) Display continues in its role as the focal point for all tractor performance management, settings and operational functions. Indeed, every single tractor function is set, monitored and controlled using its screen. The Power Management button automatically controls engine speed and transmission performance in order to achieve maximum productivity and fuel economy. 8 Setting new standards of responsible power C Series Special Application machines are all equipped with the latest in environmentally sensitive engine technology. The 15- and 18-litre engines from CAT more than meet the strict Tier III diesel engine emission regulations without any compromise in performance, durability or reliability. is improved and higher injection pressures are achieved. MT800C Series tractors have a standard 1155-litre fuel tank, with the option of an additional 95-litre tank. This combined 1250-litre fuel tank capacity is standard on the larger MT865C and MT875C models. The latest development in engine technology controls the combustion process, so that emissions are minimised and performance is further enhanced. One of the key areas is multiple-injection fuel delivery, a process in which fuel is introduced into the combustion in a series of precisely-controlled microbursts to allow for precision shaping of the combustion cycle. The Hydraulic Electric Unit Injector (HEUI) fuel delivery system improves tractor performance across the entire operating range. The 16F/4R electronicallycontrolled transmission provides the user with extreme flexibility, offering several shift options, including an automatic shifting mode using Power Management. In addition, the Intellitronics network ensures the smoothest of shifts through continuous electronic communication between engine and transmission. Before executing a shift, the transmission first senses how much load the engine is experiencing in order to deliver a seamless shift. A major benefit of Challenger Special Application tractors for owners and operators alike is the Machine System Protection Strategy (MSPS), which protects operators against causing damage by overloading the system. Once a gear is selected, MSPS automatically selects the correct power and engine characteristics for that specific gear and the prevailing load. 10 Leaders of the tracks Crucial to the performance of Challenger Special Application tractors is the unrivalled Mobil-trac rubber track system, originally designed and built by Caterpillar to provide speed, mobility and versatility, along with incredible traction, low ground pressure and the ultimate ride. With a top speed of 40km/h, the new C Series is faster over the ground than any other tracked tractor, so more time is spent tackling the groundwork task in hand, less time on haulage. At 3000 mm, the Mobil-trac system wheelbase is the longest in its power class, which, together with the axle design, ensures that the weight of the tractor is distributed over a greater area. This design not only provides superior traction and rolling resistance, but also transfers more power to the ground to improve fuel efficiency. The widely-acclaimed OptiRide suspension system irons out the most challenging terrain, providing the operator with a shock-free ride by isolating the hardbar from the chassis. A rugged stabiliser bar allows each undercarriage to rise and drop independently, while the hardbar is able to tilt by up to 8 to cope with obstacles while on the move. New to the C series are the Poly mid-wheels, extremely hard-wearing polyurethane alternatives as standard specification. More resistant than steel to chipping and damage, they have been developed to prolong the life of the mid-wheels when working in adverse conditions such as in high temperatures or on abrasive ground further reducing cost of ownership. A new, full-length debris shield protector is now available, too, providing the undercarriage with protection from debris and other damaging material. Engine and powertrain guards can also be specified. The right track options Extreme Application belts are fitted as standard on the new C Series and are available in three widths 698mm (27.5in), 762mm (30in), and 914mm (36in). As their name implies, they are designed to handle very demanding conditions, having 75mm (3in) deep tread bars and longer guide blocks to ensure rock-solid belt retention. The additional demands of scraper work are recognised in the availability of Special Application (towed scraper) belts, which have an additional two layers of rubber for performance without compromise. Two belt widths 762mm (30in) and 914mm (36in) feature wider 63mm (2.5in) tread bars for enhanced self-cleaning and prolonged service. 10

12 Ease of maintenance Downtime costs money, so you need machines that require just simple, routine maintenance to prevent reliability becoming an issue and to help ensure contracts are completed on time with no extra costs. With C Series Special Application tractors, regular maintenance checks can be carried out quickly and accurately. Gas strut-assisted, tilt-up bonnet opens from the front, allowing easy access to all key engine service points. Engine oil level can be checked and topped up quickly using the ground-level access dipstick and oil filler port. The single point of fuel fill is easily accessible from the entry platform. Easy oil and filter changes thanks to strategically-located, vertical filters. Engine oil filter slides out for simple replacement, while cooling radiators swing forward without the need for tools for debris removal. Cab air filter easily accessed below the roof overhang for cleaning or replacement. Large capacity tool box built into the steps for ease of access. Maintenance-free batteries positioned in front of the radiator. An easily-viewed sight gauge at the rear of the tractor allows the operator to quickly check the combined hydraulic, steering, differential and final drive oil levels, with quickdisconnect ports for all oil sample points. The invaluable on-board Tractor Management Centre monitors long-term service intervals and alerts the operator when scheduled maintenance is due.
